2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

Have you ever felt the need to grab a pen and start writing your thoughts on a piece of paper? Tom had always been a lover of stories, and of words that come together to create vivid imagery (意象). He would spend hours writing down his thoughts and ideas, crafting worlds and people with his pen and paper.

But when it came to his parents, they didn’t believe how much he enjoyed writing. In fact, they discouraged him, telling him that he should focus on more practical career fields like becoming a lawyer.

The annual writing competition arrived once again, which was a time to show creative writing as well as the vivid imagination of students. Although Tom had a burning passion for writing, he had always hesitated to enter the race. He was worried that his parents would disapprove of him spending so much time writing, leading him to miss the competition in previous years. But this time, he decided to take a chance and see if he could win this race. Perhaps if his parents saw how talented he truly was, they would come to support him.

Days passed as he carefully prepared his writing, pouring his heart and soul into every word. When he finished, he read it over and felt proud of what he had written. He prepared to hand in his writing, but his parents still believed he was wasting time. He still decided to submit his entry anyway.

Weeks went by before the contest’s results were announced. Tom waited anxiously, wondering if his writing was good enough to win a prize. He checked out his mailbox every day after school.

3 . How to Handle an Argument with Your Family Members

We’ve all been there. A relaxed evening with our family members. A lot of laughing. And then, as if someone had sat on the TV remote and changed the channel, the mood shifts. No more warmth. Suddenly there’s shouting, a ping-pong of accusations(指责), deadly stares, and hostility(敌意) streaming from eyes like red laser pointers. Having a conflict with your family members is frustrating, and you may feel sad and depressed.     1

Do remember that as much as it might feel this way, you’re not in a court of law with your family members.     2     .It is to restore kindness and connection. Think of it this way —if somebody wins, both parties lose.

Do try to be an advocate of others’ feelings.     3     try to stand in the shoes of your family members. Try to understand their immature ways.

4     .This might frighten your family members, making them feel accused and in turn, act defensively. Example: “I was on the phone with my sister and then suddenly you started acting like crazy out of the blue.” Talk about the way you felt instead. Example: “I was on the phone with my sister and then I suddenly felt scared when I saw you looking at me like I was in trouble.”

Don’t try to explain yourself. You often want to explain yourself when having conflicts with your family members, but you don’t have time. You’re being cut off and attacked again.     5     .The more you talk, the less your family members seem to understand and the further away you get from an agreement.

A.If you are looking for a new relationship
B.Don’t attempt to prove yourself in the face of your loved ones
C.The point of an argument isn’t to prove the others guilty or to win
D.Rather than going in circles about what you think and how you feel
E.Each accusation strikes deeper and deeper into your sense of justice
F.Don’t talk about what happened as though you’re simply stating the facts
G.Here are the do’s and don’ts when you are arguing with your family members

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍的是做家务可以给我们带来的好处。

4 . Household chores like cooking, cleaning, washing the dishes, and making the bed are never done; they just get repeated like a broken record. Boring!     1    . But there are science-based reasons for changing your attitude towards chores. It turns out that doing chores is great for your health.

2    . As researchers state in a report, doing undemanding tasks allows the mind to wander. Your mind gets a break, which allows you to consider old problems with new eyes. In fact, undemanding tasks stimulate (激发) more creative ideas than demanding tasks or just resting.

Chores are linked to a lower dementia (痴呆) risk. To discover what activities might be linked to a lower rate of dementia, researchers analyzed massive amounts of healthcare data from the UK Biobank. They found that those most engaged in household chores had a 21 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those least engaged in chores.     3    .

Finishing your chores can increase motivation. BJ Fogg, author of Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything, states that the most important skill is recognizing and celebrating successes. Completing even a small task, like making your bed, can give you a sense of satisfaction.     4    . Similarly, author Admiral William H. McRaven argues that if you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

Chores are good for children’s mental health. Children develop a sense of ownership when they have jobs to do around the house and it makes them feel like they are an important member of the household.     5    . In my own case, I bond with my daughter by gossiping (闲聊) and singing while we do chores together.

A.Chores are an opportunity for “me time”
B.Chores can lead to creative problem-solving
C.Thus, you feel motivated to deal with tasks one after another
D.In this way, they can be taught to be independent and confident
E.Like many people, you may regard chores as something annoying
F.Doing chores with children also improves the parent-child relationship
G.This result indicated simple changes could make a difference to health

文章大意:本文是记叙文。文章主要介绍了印度的一种叫做“dabbas”的容器,通常用于保存食物。

5 . Every auntie I know has a kitchen drawer containing a carefully maintained collection of yoghurt dabbas. Dabba is Indian word for ‘box,’ but it refers to all manner of containers, too. Dabbas are saved and reused again and again most of the time.

When I was a kid, my mother cut no corners when it came to food, sparing no effort to cook the meals—after a full day at the office. The leftovers would inevitably(必然地) find their way into yoghurt dabbas.

But just as every auntie cherished her dabbas, every uncle hated them. My own father, a generally easy-going man, carefully avoided the drawer of dabbas. When he felt annoyed at the dabbas, my mother would shoot him a look that would surely have killed a weaker man and place her dabba carefully back in its drawer. Occasionally my father would get fed up with the overflowing drawer and clear all the dabbas. But my mother would simply start the process of collecting them again.

When I went away to university, my mom used to cook food and send it back with me with strict instructions to wash the dabbas and bring them home. But when I did so, I felt embarrassed with the eyes of my roommates on me. Eventually, I found my way to a big company and had a family of my own. Like my mother before me, I’m also the proud owner of an extensive dabba collection.

They truly are the most useful of objects, with uses ranging from food storage to toys for my children. It is a source of a strange and indescribable comfort. When I married my husband, my mother was concerned. “You know, you come from very different backgrounds,” she said. Dealing with cultural differences is surely an adventure. But the other night, I heard my husband yelling in the kitchen, and the next morning, I found my dabbas in the recycling bin. I narrowed my eyes a little as I fished them out, washed them up and replaced them in their drawer. I was practising my mother’s death stare.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了“美国寄宿家庭”项目的目的,时间长度、学生数量和活动等情况。

6 . Many American schools have a student exchange program with foreign countries. Along with this program, there is usually another one called the “American Host Family” program. As its name suggests, the program gets American families involved in foreign students’ lives in America and offers homes for them.

Foreign students generally welcome such an opportunity to have a “family” here, but there are also those who prefer to stay “homeless”.

Many American families volunteer to host foreign students. However, if there is a shortage of host families, schools also get in touch with local people and introduced foreign students to them.

The “American Host Family ”program changes in lengths of time. It can go from a few days to a few years, depending on each individual school. After the first year is over, it is up to foreign students and their “families” to decide if they want to stay together as a “family”. American families can host as many foreign students as they like. They can either have several students or just one at a time. Many families start with new students each year while still keeping in touch with the old ones. Schools usually leave it to Foreign students and their host families to decide their activities after both sides meet.

My school, however, holds activities every year. On major holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, foreign students are usually invited to their themes for dinner. Even schools that do not have host family programs often arrange students to get together with American families on these special holiday occasions.

It is typical that a host family invites its foreign daughter or son over, and they cook the student’s home food together. Undoubtedly, Chinese students are usually considered good cooks, whether or not they are really qualified for such praise at home. Although many Chinese students rarely cooked at home, they often have a hard time making their American friends believe that they cannot cook. It often happens when a Chinese student promises to cook a Chinese meal for his host family, he usually sees a little crowd expecting him: friends or relatives are also invited over for the “special” Chinese food!

B.To provide help for foreign students.

文章大意:本是一篇说明文。主要介绍了家庭生活比以前更具挑战性。就如何才能创造更幸福的家庭生活作者给了我们一些建议。

7 . Nowadays, family life has become even more challenging than before. Then, how can we create a happier family life? Let’s see some advice.

Enjoy togetherness. When children are babies, parents are advised to spend one-on-one time with their babies.     1     This can be a big mistake since enjoying each other’s company (陪伴) is one of the easiest ways for families to create lasting happiness. Parents should regularly spend quality time with their children doing activities together like playing games, sports.

2     Although the Internet has certainly made communication easier, it is still important to have face-to-face time with your family members. Try to avoid using your cell phone so much.     3     Many families have regular meetings where they discuss issues affecting (影响) the family. This can be a great way to start talking face to face. You can talk about your family’s values, or how you can work together as a group to solve problems that affect the family.     4

Plan fun activities as a family. This can be something that you do once or twice a month, or even once a week. This can be something as easy as going to the beach, a park, or going on a trip to visit relatives.     5     Doing the activities regularly can help you build stronger relationships with your family members, and relieve (释放) stress that many families feel.

A.Talk more as a family.
B.Let family members talk about activities.
C.But, as children get older, the one-on-one time is reduced.
D.Parents need to help their children manage their daily stress.
E.Make quality conversation with your family members, instead.
F.You can also try simpler ones such as camping overnight in your backyard.
G.Regular communication like this can help you build stronger family relationships.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了如何撰写家庭箴言及其意义。

8 . In a world full of parenting advice, i’s easy to get trapped in the latest discipline strategy or the trending hot topics.     1     Creating a family motto (箴言) is one way to help you focus on the things that are most important to you, and it can also help to clarify your parenting decisions.

A family motto is not just pretty words on a page. It is a meaningful, value-packed statement or series of statements that set your family apart from everyone else.     2    I’s deeper than that—it goes to the heart of what you want for your kids and your family.

Most parents have a vague (模糊的) idea of what they'd like to teach their children, and when they try to teach or discipline their kids, the messages come out ...vague! You know certain things are important, but in the moment, you forget or lose sight of the big picture.     3

4     It may help to fill in the blank, “In our family we are/ will...” Some families create a simple phrase that involves the main themes, while other families list the most important ones individually. Once it’s complete, write down your family motto and post it where everyone can see it.

5     Over time, you may find that your family motto is outdated or missing important aspects. Call another brainstorming session and work together to create a motto that involves more of your family's goals and values.

A.A family motto is a new trend.
B.It is also not some house rules or expectations.
C.Use this motto to stay focused on what you want to stress.
D.Writing a family motto helps clarify your values and goals.
E.Of course, a family motto won't solve all your parenting dilemmas.
F.Brainstorm ideas, values, goals or characteristics that are important to you.
G.These competing messages may cause you to forget your own parenting goals.
