5 . College and high-school teachers are expressing concern about ChatGPT, an AI program that allows people with limited writing skills to create high-quality texts. It calls into question how and why we teach writing at all. If AI can do a fairly good job at most writing tasks, why spend so much time learning writing in school?

In fact, learning to write goes beyond just mastering grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. It involves much more. For one thing, it’s about learning to turn a loose set of thoughts into a clear line of reasoning — a skill that is useful for everyone, not just those who enjoy writing or need to do a lot of it for work.

Learning to write also trains your imagination to construct the person who will read your words. It puts you in relation to someone you may not know, someone who may even not exist. When you learn to write, you learn to meet their needs in an unfamiliar context. Even ordinary assignments teach students to predict what another person knows and expects.

Writing is never simply self-expression. It’s expression to a specific audience for a specific purpose. In some cases, like a love letter, a writer knows their audience very well. In others, the audience is every bit a work of the imagination as a novel’s characters are. Writers, then, should give up trying to address the public at large, but should imagine that a friend, though not the closest friend, is listening to our talk.

When this act of imagination is done well, a reader can feel deeply understood, as if a stranger has told them some previously unknown truth about themselves. That’s how I felt reading “Difference Maker” — an essay about parenthood. While our situations were unique, naming the problem provided a deeper understanding.

It seems unavoidable that large-language models of AI will allow us to offload some of the writing tasks that students learn in school. But we can’t allow ourselves to lose the capacity to empathize (共情) with distant strangers at just the moment when we’re more able than ever to communicate with them.

6 . How to Do Well in Science Class

Doing well in science depends on developing useful study skills and learning to participate (参与) in class.     1     If you’ve got good study skills that you’ve developed in other courses, you’ll be able to use many of these to do well in science.

Read the required material. When your teacher requires reading from a textbook or a website, take time to read it before you come to class. If you don’t have time to read it well, it’s a good idea to look quickly at it so that you have an idea of what it’s about.     2

Take clear and organized notes. The notes you take in class will help you know what to study between classes.     3     Instead, pay careful attention to any information your teacher stresses, which is likely to be included on tests.

4     Many science classes include laboratory experiments, which are practice of techniques you’ve learned about in your textbook or lectures. Your teacher will expect you to show up ready to start your experiment. Read the instructions for the laboratory in advance of class.

Reread your notes after class. If there’s anything in your notes that confuses you, or which you feel might be wrong, check with your teacher or a classmate to ensure you have the right information.     5     This tests your understanding of the material in a way that ensures you’ve really grasped (理解) the meaning.

A.Be prepared for the laboratory experiment.
B.Work in a group with others in class.
C.Doing a good job in laboratories is also a good way to improve your performance in science.

E.Rereading can help you to rewrite your notes in a better way.

9 . Tips for Keeping Awake in Class

If you want to keep awake during class, sleep the night before your class. Students who doze (打瞌睡) in class often missed sleep the night before. Getting enough sleep is your first line of defense when it comes to staying awake in class.     1     For most people, eight hours of sleep is enough to get through the day, but your body may require more.

2     This will train your body to know when it needs to be asleep and when it is time to wake up. Allow yourself time to relax before heading to bed by putting away your phone, homework, and other things that keep your mind active. Getting enough high-quality sleep can help you.

Another way is to take a shower before class.     3     The warm water from your shower raises your body temperature. This also increases your heart rate so your blood travels around your body faster. Finally, it helps deliver oxygen to your important organs so your body can work at the best level of efficiency.

4     When your body is exposed to cold water, your blood will flow at a higher pressure, meaning that your circulation (循环) is even further increased. The cold water will also help wake you up because it will shock your body, forcing you to breathe more deeply.     5     And thus you will be more mentally sharp.

A.Having a warm meal also works.
B.This will increase your oxygen intake.
C.Read your favourite books before sleep.
D.This helps you feel refreshed and awakens your senses.
E.For some extra energy, finish your shower with cold water.
F.Make sure to get enough sleep if you have a class the next day.
G.Keep a regular sleep schedule by going to bed at the same time each night.
