文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了一个面向高中生的计划,这一计划针对对科学和农业感兴趣的学生,并为贫穷地区的学生提供学习技术和做实验的机会。

3 . Instead of hitting the beach, fourteen high school students traded swimming suits for lab coats last summer and turned their attention to scientific experiments.

The High School Research Program offers high school students guidance with researchers in Texas A&M’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Jennifer Funkhouser, academic adviser for the Department of Rangeland Ecology and Management, directs this four-week summer program designed to increase understanding of research and its career potential (潜能).

Several considerations go into selecting students, including grades, school involvement and interest in science and agriculture. And many students come from poorer school districts, Funkhouser says. “This is their chance to learn techniques and do experiments they never would have a chance to do in high school.

Warner Ervin of Houston is interested in animal science and learned how to tell male from female mosquitoes (蚊子). His adviser, Craig Coates, studies the genes (基因) of mosquitoes that allow them to fight against malaria and yellow fever. Coates thought this experience would be fun and helpful to the high school students.

The agricultural research at A&M differs from stereotypes. It’s “molecular (分子) science on the cutting edge,” Funkhouser says. The program broadened students’ knowledge. Victor Garcia of Rio Grande City hopes to become a biology teacher and says he learned a lot about chemistry from the program.

At the end of the program, the students presented papers on their research. They’re also paid $600 for their work — another way this program differs from others, which often charge a fee.

Fourteen students got paid to learn that science is fun, that agriculture is a lot more than milking and plowing and that research can open many doors.

1. The research program is mainly designed for   ________.
A.high school advisers from Houston
B.college students majoring in agriculture

3. When the program was over, the students ________.
A.entered that collegeB.wrote research reports
C.paid for their researchD.found a way to make money
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.A Program for Agricultural Science StudentsB.A Program for Animal Science Students
C.A Program for Medical Science LoversD.A Program for Future Science Lovers

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了对于一名刚进高中生的学生,学校有很多俱乐部,加入学校俱乐部对高中生活学习有很大的好处。

4 . After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs (俱乐部) at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly benefit (有益于) you.

Your old friends may have left you after entering high school. And it means you need to meet new people. Joining a club allows you to talk with others and find those who have similar interests as you. Based on my experience, I have met some of my best friends from club activities which opened up many new doors for me.

Another really nice thing about joining a club is that it looks really good on your applications (申请书). Trying new things is something that looks really good on any application. Being outgoing is considered a very good quality, which shows that you are determined and willing to put yourself out there and best of all try new things. What’s more, it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews.

Besides, joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. Most teens go to schools, then go back home and spend the rest of the day in front of a screen. Teens are also very likely to fall into the wrong crowd, which could lead to some bad results. Clubs are good places to spend time, with good people to fall back on.

The most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefits it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, making the most of time, and being organized are those you will meet every single day of your life, but you can learn all of them in clubs.

So if you haven’t joined a school club yet, you know what you should do now.

1. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A.Friends should share common interest.B.Joining a club helps one make friends.
C.Joining a club benefits one’s mental health.D.Friends may leave each other sooner or later.
2. What does Paragraph 4 imply(暗示)?
A.Teens today aren’t so interested in joining clubs.
B.Some classrooms are not big enough for students.
C.Doing club activities can help teens attend a good university.
D.Joining a club helps keep students away from doing bad things.
3. In the author’s opinion, what’s the greatest benefit of joining a club?
A.Developing new hobbies.B.Meeting different people.
C.Getting useful life skills.D.Making use of your free time.
4. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To give tips on making new friends.
B.To show ways to set up school clubs.
C.To teach students to enjoy a better school life.
D.To encourage high school students to join a club.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了墨西哥一所学校创建的项目,该项目用来激励那些真正有能力和兴趣的学生学习更多知识,并继续接受挑战。

7 . Every school has students who stand out for their abilities and their eagerness to learn. In Mexico, a school created a program to work with them. In 2019, both teachers Lotta Andersson and John Rennie got the idea to provide learning opportunities for students with a hunger for knowledge. They are English coordinators(协调员) in the school. “We want to have a program to inspire students who really have the abilities and the interests to learn more and continue accepting challenges,” Andersson said during a recent interview.

Students in the program, which was called Learning Challenges, met with the teachers about once a month. Andersson and Rennie would help us choose research topics. We then worked with the teachers to find books, interview subjects and Internet sources. While in Learning Challenges, I gave presentations on European culture and the fashion industry.

When asked what skills students had formed in the program, which ended in June 2020 because of the limits of a common disease. Andersson said, “They had learned to ask questions, be more open-minded and see things from different angles(角度). Also, they mastered the skills — reflecting more, acting actively, and learning not to put limits on themselves.”

A student, Yihane Abed, conducted research on the sun, the moon, stars, planets, etc, while in Learning Challenges. “The skills I developed were teamwork and the ways to do research and give a good presentation,” she said.

Andersson and Rennie continue to help students pursue their love of learning. “The program doesn’t exist formally, but as an important part of the culture at school, it is still needed,” Andersson said. “There is much more difference, not only for students who need extra help, but also for those who are higher achievers.”

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了在纽约,许多学生参加的减少食物浪费的项目。

8 . In New York, students in 18 schools participate in a program(计划) called We Future Cycle. Started by Anna Giordano in 2014, it teaches kids to reduce food waste.

Lunch areas in theses schools are equipped with a special box, where kids can put their unwanted drinks, fruits, and even untouched sandwiches. The things in the box are available for any student that wants them. Whatever remains at the end of the day is donated to the food bank. Giordano says this box has helped reduce the number of waste bags from an average of 22 to just 2!

To help kids develop similar habits at home, the non-profit has created courses to educate families about the importance of making use of waste. They also urge parents to have open conversations with their kids about food choices.

But, as we’re all aware, kids aren’t the only ones that waste food. Adults are equally bad, if not worse! To prevent that, Josh Treuhaft founded Salvage Supperclub in 2014. The occasionally organized dinners promise people a tasty multi-course meal for only $50 USD per person. It is also a plan to save waste because the delicious food is made from vegetables that are past their prime(全盛时期) and, therefore, headed for the dustbin.

The other catch? Customers have to eat their meals inside a dumpster (大型垃圾装卸车)! The place of course, is totally clean. In addition to helping people rethink their actions, Trcuhaft also helps them do good by donating part of the profits to non-profit organizations devoted to fighting against food waste.

A.Students are more generous.
B.We Future Cycle is very successful.

A.It is nicer and cleaner.
B.It is environmentally friendly.
C.It can save much money and energy.

3. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To explain reasons to share food.
B.To show the importance of saving food.
C.To introduce programs of reducing food waste.
D.To call on people to take up a popular lifestyle.
