文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。员工在工作时间观看幽默视频可能并不总是在浪费时间,文章主要介绍了西安大略大学的博士生Ruby Nadler和她的同事的研究表明,积极的情绪能促进创造性思维。

1 . Streaming humorous videos on the Internet at work isn’t always a waste of time. They may be putting themselves in a good mood (心情) so that they can think more creatively.

According to Ruby Nadler, a PhD student at the university of Western Ontario, “Generally, a positive mood has been found to improve creative problem solving and flexible yet careful thinking.” She and her colleagues Rahel Rabi and John Paul Minda focused their research on a specific type of learning that benefits from creative thinking.

People in the study were put into various moods before being given a category (类别) learning task to complete: They learned to classify (分类) sets of pictures with visually (视觉) complex patterns. The researchers used music and video clips to change people’s mood; at the beginning, they tested out a few to see which ones made individuals the happiest and saddest. The happiest music was a cheerful Mozart composition, while the happiest video was a newborn baby laughing.

The researchers then used them in the experiment, along with sad music and videos that had no effect on moods. People were required to learn to spot a pattern after listening to the music and seeing the movie. Volunteers who were happy were better at learning a rule to categorize the patterns than those who were sad or indifferent.

“If you have a project where you want to think creatively, or you have a problem to carefully consider, being in a positive mood can help you do that,” Nadler says. And music is a simple method of putting yourself in a good mood. Everyone responds to various types of music, so don’t feel obligated (必须的) to switch to Mozart, she adds.

This, according to Nadler, might be one of the reasons why individuals enjoy watching humorous films at work. “I think people are unconsciously (无意识地) trying to put themselves in a positive mood, so the seeming waste of time may actually be beneficial to employers,” she says.

1. How did the researchers change the participants’ mood in their study?
A.By sets of pictures.B.By music and videos.
C.By an assignment.D.By a project.
2. What were the participants in different moods required to do in the study?
A.Complete a given task.B.Report how they felt.
C.Learn a piece of music.D.Design a rule for the given task.
3. Which of the following may Nadler agree with?
A.Happy and sad people are equally good at learning.B.Only Mozart’s music can help keep a good mood.
C.A positive mood can help think creatively.D.It’s a must to keep a good mood at work.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Ways to change moods.B.Types of music and videos.
C.Methods of keeping a good mood.D.Positive effects of a good mood.

文章大意:本文为议论文。文章谈到如何处理人们出现情绪失控的状况。当生气时,把生气这种状态埋藏在心底是不好的,要学会宣泄但不要伤害别人,要用理智处理不良的情绪。

2 . Have you ever lost your temper (脾气)? Did you shout or want to hit someone?

1     You may get angry when something doesn’t go your way. Maybe you get mad at yourself when you don’t understand your homework or when your team loses an important game. Maybe your teacher gave you too much homework. Or maybe a friend borrowed your favorite video game and then broke it. That made your mad!

There are different ways people feel anger.     2     Are you breathing (呼吸) faster? Is your face bright red? Do you want to break something or hit someone? Anger can make you shout at those around you, even people you like or love.

Some people keep their anger buried deep inside. If you do this, you might get a headache or your stomach might start to hurt. You may start to cry.     3     You should find a way to let it out without hurting yourself or others.

Don’t lose control if you get angry.     4     Instead, admit to yourself that you are angry and try to know why, which helps to find the solution. What can you do to keep the situation from happening again? If your little sister gets a toy and you don’t, it’s not OK to break that toy. Maybe you can ask her to share it with you. It helps to talk about your anger with an adult, such as a parent, teacher, or relative.     5     That way you will feel good.

A.It’s not good to hide your anger.
B.Anger can even be a good thing.
C.Taking it out on others never solves anything.
D.Many things may make children angry.
E.Usually your body will tell you when you are angry.
F.Once you talk about anger, those bad feelings usually start to go away.
G.When someone you know is angry, he or she may stop talking to you or become quiet.

Many people think that money brings happiness. However, according to Professor Michael Argyle, this is not true. In Britain, we are     1     (rich) but unhappier than fifty years   ago. The USA is the richest country in the world but Americans are not the happiest people in the world.

Professor Argyle has found that very poor people and very rich people are unhappier than those in between. For example, very poor people in     2    developing world live in overcrowded houses without any running water and     3    no electricity. However, there are many millionaires (百万富翁) with     4     (person) problems. A lot of young people     5    get rich very quickly are at risk.

Because of this, a few young millionaires are changing their life styles. Richard Cross, a multi-millionaire computer analyst ( 分 析 师 ) from California is an example. His house     6     (show) no signs of his wealth. There is a small garden   and there only two   cars     7     (park) outside the house. “I want my kids     8     (live) a normal life,” says Richard.

So what can make     9     (we) happy? According to Professor Argyle, you should have one close relationship and some close     10     (friend). You should do a little sport and have a lot of contact (联系) with other people. Other people make you happy, not money!

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,主要介绍的是心理健康日是什么以及它的意义。

4 . Have you ever felt nervous or afraid to take time off from work to look after your mental health?

Marisa Kabas, a writer and political strategist, recently posed a similar question on Twitter (推特网), inspired by Simone Biles, who stopped taking part in Olympic events this week to protect her mental health.

“It was so shocking to so many people,” Ms. Kabas said on Wednesday in an interview. “Because the whole mentality (心态, 思维方式) is to be strong, and push through the pain.”

If you’re unlikely to use sick days for mental health reasons or are scared of being punished for doing so, I experts say it’s time to start thinking about how to protect your mental well-being. You should take a “sad day”.

There’s no official definition for a “sad day,” also known as a mental health day. Typically, it is paid time off drawn from sick days(or personal days) to help employees who aren’t feeling like their usual selves, offering an opportunity to refresh their minds, do something meaningful; or simply take a break from daily stressors. The “sad day” is only a temporary (暂时的) fix, and not meant to address deeper problems, but sometimes a little time away can make a big difference.

In most situations, just say that you need to take a sick day, and leave it at that, the experts advised. “I think the safe advice is not to be honest and frank,” said Andrew Kuller, a clinical psychologist. Not everybody values mental health, he added, and “unless you’re close with your boss, it is a risk. But say you work at the type of organization where you can tell the truth without fear of being punished. In that case, you still don’t need to reveal why you want to take a sick day.”

Whatever you do, don t spend the mental health day feeling guilty. So instead of thinking, “I should be at work right now, try to reframe your thinking in a more positive way. For example, try saying: “It would be great; if I could be at work right now. But today is a day that I need to take care of myself, so that’s what I’m going to do.”

1. Why were so many people shocked in the eyes of Ms. Kabas?
A.Simone Biles posed questions on Twitter.
B.Simone Biles was interviewed by Ms. Kabas.
C.Simone Biles inspired sports fans greatly in the Olympics.
D.Simone Biles pulled out of Olympic events due to mental health.
2. What can we know about a “sad day”?
A.It is only short-term relief.
B.It has an official definition.
C.It is of no value in reducing stress.
D.It is a perfect solution to big problems.
3. What are you advised to do in Paragraph 6?
A.Face punishment bravely.
B.Try your best to please your boss.
C.Ask for a sick day without much explanation.
D.Tell your boss about the importance of mental health.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Don’t be too serious about a “sad day”
B.When work weighs you down, take a “sad day”
C.Don’t be afraid to talk about your mental health
D.When you feel burnt out, tell your manager openly

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了愤怒的不良影响以及如何应对这种情绪。

5 . Anger is the most destructive emotion, which will dominate your thoughts and actions.     1     You may also speak reckless language without thought. So what can be done to control anger? Here are four ways that you can combat the causes of anger.

Change your attitude.

Realizing that no-one is perfect and accepting that not everyone has the same standards as you is a good start to avoiding getting angry.     2    For example, when you are in a position of authority, and you give instructions that are not followed, instead of getting angry, look for the reason why. It may be that the person will need further training or guidance.

Stop trying to manage your anger.

Anger management used to be promoted as a way of dealing with anger, but a much better way of facing up to anger is to identify the root cause. When trying to do it be prepared to be honest with yourself. Is it worry or stress making you angry? Are you fearful of failure?     3

Don’t dismiss anger as a bad emotion.

4    Martin Luther King was angry about the lack of civil rights in the USA. Gandhi was angry about British domination in India. They both used that anger to motivate themselves to fight against what they saw as injustice. Anger of this type can be used to fuel action. Use it to help you not hinder you.

    5

We all get tempted to throw something or even hit someone when getting angry. A reaction like that is called the easy way, which might make you feel better after an angry outburst. However, staying calm or walking away from conflict are harder but much better choices .By learning control, you can become a much calmer, less volatile person.

A.This applies to work, day-to-day life, and relationships.
B.Once you know why you get mad, then it is possible to deal with the cause.
C.When you are in a temper, you may make ill-considered decisions that you will probably regret.
D.Many people try to live by high standards, and as a result, are often disappointed and get angry.
E.Don’t take the easy way when you get angry.
F.Stop anger from being your master.
G.There are occasions when anger can be directed in such a way as to achieve great things.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章给出了控制愤怒情绪的建议。

8 . There are a lot of emotions, including anger. Anger can be a powerful emotion, and if not kept tame (驯服), it can quickly get out of control. You can damage and destroy relationships by letting your anger get the best of you.    1

Give yourself a timeout. If you find yourself getting upset and the anger is building, give yourself a timeout. Walk away from the situation, practice deep breathing techniques, calm yourself down, and relax.     2     get yourself as calm as you can and focus on the problem, rather than how angry you are.

3    When you find yourself getting angry, have an outlet in place you can do, such as, going for a run, going for a bike ride, but do something active. Exercise releases endorphins in your brain, which are natural mood enhancers and can help calm you down.

Collect your thoughts. Before you just speak out the first thing that wants to come out of your mouth, take a few minutes to collect your thoughts.     4

Forgive. Practice forgiveness. When someone does something wrong to you, practice forgiving rather than getting upset.     5    Start with smaller incidents and work up to being able to forgive for bigger mistakes or problems.

The more you work at handling your anger, the more natural and easier it will be to keep calm. You will eventually find that you do not get upset and angry so quickly.

A.Use humor
B.Find an outlet for your anger.
C.Before you put yourself back in the situation,
D.Learn some tips to help you manage your anger.
E.The more you forgive, each time it will get easier.
F.If you find you still anger easily and it gets out of control,
G.This way, what you say is planned, rather than spontaneous, which can lead to saying things you don’t mean.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了从在家办公变为重回工作岗位上班时如何应对焦虑和紧张等心理问题。

9 . Niels Eék, psychologist and co-founder of mental health and self-development platform Remente, gives advice on how to manage your mental health when returning to work.

The prospect of going back to work may cause some nervousness and anxiety, especially after spending so long with limited face-to-face contact. Upon returning to the office, you may want to keep track of how much time you are devoting to work when you return home in the evenings.

Remote working can blur the boundaries between your professional and personal life, so it’s important to re-establish this division, particularly if you have spent the last four months working from home. Reading and receiving emails and messages outside of working hours can make some people feel more anxious. To avoid this, you may want to set clear boundaries at home, where you do not address work emails during certain hours, to give yourself time to relax ready for the next day.

Of course, some tasks may be urgent, so ask your manager to phone you if something needs to be immediately addressed. That way, you don’t need to be constantly checking your device and can instead focus on your own mental and physical well-being. Go to bed at a time that allows you to rise well-rested, cook nutritious meals that you enjoy, or perhaps take an evening walk to relax. Returning to work is likely to be a shock after so long, so make sure to do what you need to do to feel relaxed each evening.

Talking to a friend or colleague can be extremely useful when addressing these anxieties. It is good to remember that these feelings are something that many people face, so being open about your emotions is nothing to feel uncomfortable about. “Remember that it is OK to tell your friends and co-workers that you need some time out” as you return to regular interactions with people after months of isolation. It may take some time to adapt to the change in circumstances, but this is totally normal.

1. What will happen to the people who return to office work?
A.They will need more career development guidance.
B.They will have to check their emails constantly.
C.They will feel more relaxed than working at home.
D.They may suffer from some mental problems.
2. What does the underlined word “blur” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Mix up.B.Focus on.C.Break away.D.Set up.
3. How can you avoid being disturbed after work in the evening?
A.Telling your manager you need rest.
B.Checking your device repeatedly for messages.
C.Confirming urgent and vital things to be addressed.
D.Telling your colleagues to spare you some time.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.How to manage your physical health at work
B.How to deal with anxiety as you return to work
C.Advice on a better performance at office work
D.Advice on striking a balance between work and life
