文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项关于锻炼有助于减少和预防抑郁症的研究。

1 . For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.

For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.

Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”

Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.

1. How did the researchers reach their conclusion?
A.By analyzing a mass of data.
B.By conducting genetic research.
C.By comparing various levels of activity.
D.By tracking the subjects for many years.
2. What does the study show about depression?
A.Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B.Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C.Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D.Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
3. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Harmful.B.Complex.
C.Unusual.D.Common.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To discuss a disease.
B.To introduce a method.
C.To analyze a genetic risk.
D.To explain a phenomenon.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章强调了在疫情期间对于孤独的研究的重要性,并介绍了研究结果,提出了应对建议。

3 . During the most isolating worldwide pandemic in a century, it’s time to take a closer look at what may result in loneliness.

As a group, humans develop being around others, but how much and what kind of contact each person needs to feel part of a community varies among individuals as well as over one person’s stage of life. “A common belief is that the loneliest people are those who are alone; actually, it’s important to separate the two,” said Dr. Perissinotto, a professor of medicine at the University of California. “Kids with their families can be lonely because they can’t see the friends at school; people who are not physically isolated can feel lonely because the community doesn’t welcome them in; and older adults can experience loneliness through retirement or death of a loved one.” What leads to loneliness is much deeper than being alone.

With the pandemic exacerbating loneliness issues, an increasing number of health professionals are concerned about the mental and physical health risks associated with the feeling—like depression and early death, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s why, experts say, it’s also time to look more closely at what we can do about loneliness.

“When it comes to fighting loneliness, the key is not looking at circumstances and assuming what feelings should be associated with it, but actually asking yourself if you are lonely,” Perissinotto said. “If your solitude (独处) is a choice and you have people who can support you if you need help, there is no saying you can’t live a happy life.” And just as solitude doesn’t necessarily equal loneliness, interaction doesn’t mean fulfilment for everyone, according to Hawkley, a principal research scientist at the University of Chicago. “People can be around others and feel lonely anyway or they can be pretty much single souls and not be lonely,” Hawkley pointed out.

Hawkley divides connections into three primary types and holds that loneliness can stem from the sensing of a lack of any of them. “The first type happens when someone like a spouse is so close to you that part of your identity becomes closely connected with his or hers. Then there is the second type, which you establish with your close friends, as well as the third type—those interactions that make you feel part of a community.”

It is suggested that one identify what kind of loss of connection his loneliness is coming from and then evaluate the quality of his various relationships. Identifying the kind of connection that one is longing for and the quality of the relationships he already has are important first steps, but where one goes from there depends entirely on his specific context.

1. According to the passage, Perissinotto probably agrees that ________.
A.people living on an isolated island tend to be more lonely.
B.asking someone if he’s lonely doesn’t help fight loneliness.
C.those choosing to be alone do not necessarily feel upset.
D.someone without community admission feels powerless.
2. The underlined word exacerbating in paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A.worseningB.ascendingC.confusingD.alleviating
3. What can we conclude from the last two paragraphs?
A.There are no obvious connections among three different types of loneliness.
B.Hawkley holds that people lacking one of the three connections feel lonely.
C.Recognizing one’s missing connection is helpful in dealing with loneliness.
D.The quality of one’s relationships is not so important as his specific context.
4. What’s the author’s attitude towards the loneliness issue?
A.SkepticalB.ConcernedC.AppreciativeD.Contradictory

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。作者试图解释一个问题:世界上很多人常常陷于后悔之中,觉得这是不幸福的原因。所以试图永不后悔。但作者却认为适当的后悔才能帮助我们不断进步。

4 . “Regrets, I’ve had a few. But then again, too few to mention,” Frank Sinatra chanted in his 1969 hit “My Way”. The song’s idea is attractive: that anyone can just declare what’s done is done and move on. Some take the declaration a step further and claim they have no regrets at all. Whether a boast or an actual attitude, “no regrets” suggests that life can and should be lived without looking through the rear-view mirror.

Easier said than done, though. In 2020, author Daniel H. Pink launched the World Regret Survey, the largest ever survey on the topic. With his research team, Pink asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently?” 82% said regret is at least an occasional part of their life; roughly 21% said they feel regret “all the time.” Only 1% said they never feel regret.

If you are of the “no regrets” type, you might think that all this regret is a recipe for unhappiness. But that isn’t the case. True, being overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for you. But going to the other extreme may be even worse. To rid yourself of regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow; it leads you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.

As uncomfortable as it is, regret is an amazing cognitive (认知) achievement. If today your relationship with your partner has soured, your regret might mentally take you back to last year. You would remember your being mean and sensitive, and then imagine yourself showing more patience, being kind instead of hurtful at key moments. Then you would fast-forward to today and see how your relationship could be progressing instead of languishing.

But regret doesn’t have to be left unmanaged. The trick is to acknowledge it and use it for learning and improvement. You can be honest with yourself about what went wrong and use that knowledge to enjoy better relationships in the future.

1. What should we do if we have had a bitter quarrel with a close friend according to Frank Sinatra?
A.Attract more people to your argument.
B.Send him/her a letter of apology.
C.Boast about being more reasonable.
D.Forget about it and just let it go.
2. Which of the following statements about regret may the writer agree with?
A.We can do nothing about regret.
B.Unhappiness results from regret.
C.Ignoring regrets is missing the opportunity to improve.
D.Ridding yourself of regrets helps free you from sorrow.
3. What does the underlined word “languishing” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Improving.
B.Healing.
C.Showing up.
D.Breaking up.
4. What might be a suitable title for the text?
A.Regret to become smarter-if you let it.
B.Long for a different past? Regret it!
C.Regret? Not my way!
D.Stay away! Regret will heal itself.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了关于愤怒的最新研究结果,只要控制得当,愤怒也有好处。

6 . Anger is good for you, as long as you control it, according to new psychology research. A new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows anger may help people reduce the negative effects of stress and help you become healthier.

“Here getting emotional is not bad for you if you look at the case of anger,” said Jennifer Lerner of Carnegie Mellon. “The more people show anger, the lower their stress responses.”

Lerner studied 92 UCLA students by asking them to count back from 6,200. They must say out loud every thirteenth number. Researchers disturbed them by asking them to count faster or ask them other questions. If they made any mistakes, they had to restart from the very beginning. Many students felt upset about making so many mistakes or got angry.

Lerner used a hidden video camera and recorded all their facial expressions during the test. The researchers describe their reactions as fear, anger.

Other researchers recorded the students’ blood pressure, pulse and production of a high-stress hormone (荷尔蒙) called cortisol. People whose faces showed more fear during the experiment had higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone. Both can have lasting effects such as diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease, depression and extra weight gain.

When people feel fear, negative effects increase, but when they get angry, those negatives go down, according to the study.

“Having that sense of anger leads people to actually feel some power in what otherwise is a maddening (令人发狂的) situation,” Lerner said.

Lerner previously studied Americans’ emotional response to the 9·11 terrorist attacks (9·11 恐怖袭击) two months after the incident. She found people who reacted with anger were more optimistic. These people are healthier compared with those who were frightened during the event. So in maddening situations, anger is not a bad thing to have. It’s a healthier response than fear.

1. In what ways can anger be good to people?
A.By showing their optimistic side.B.By reducing their stress.
C.By reducing high blood pressure.D.By taking the place of fear.
2. The researchers made the students angry by ______.
A.recording their performance secretly
B.asking them to count to 6,200 again and again
C.disturbing them and making them start all over again
D.criticizing them when they made mistakes
3. What does the underlined word “both” in Paragraph 5 refer to according to the passage?
A.Fear and anger.B.Blood pressure and pulse.
C.Blood pressure and cortisol.D.Higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone.
4. What is the story mainly about?
A.The findings of new psychology research.B.What you can do with anger in certain cases.
C.Different effects produced by anger and fear.D.Healthier responses in maddening situations.
