Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school. When they turned around a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”

“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle in (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with (与……没有关系) it and may get into trouble.

“You are a coward (胆小鬼), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

Late, Robert told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him. From then on, they looked down upon (瞧不起) Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert. He just ignored (不理睬) the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him any more. He had some other boys and they also said Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth (深度). He struggled, and screamed (尖叫) for help, but all in vain (徒劳). The other boys got out of the water as fast as they could, and they did not even try to help him.

Paragraph 1:

Robert was fast sinking (下沉).

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者发现了同学马蒂的魔术秘密并最后与他组成魔术表演组合的故事。

2 . Marty was new at school. On his first day, he showed magic to his schoolmates. He made a toothpick (牙签) disappear and appear within seconds. Everyone wondered how he did it.

“How did you do that?” I asked. “Sorry, but that’s the first law of magic. A magician never lets out his secrets.” Marty smiled. I thought he was tricking everyone. I would make his secrets known to all.

The next day, Marty gave his second magic show. He said he could make things float (飘起). He had a ring in one hand and a pencil in the other. That’s when I saw it: a thin line tied around the end of the pencil and attracted to a button on Marty’s shirt! Sure enough, he made the ring “float” by sliding (滑动) it over the pencil and hanging it from the line. No one else noticed, but I found the secret. I got close to him and said, “I know how you did it.” He looked nervous and asked me, “Are you going to tell others?” I thought for a moment. If I told, I’d finally be able to prove Marty’s magic was fake (假的). Then Marty might lose his new friends. So I told him that I would say nothing about it. And then I walked away.

“Wait!” Marty jumped in front of me. “You’ve got a pretty good eye for magic. If you’re interested, I have an idea,” Marty suggested. And I accepted his idea. That’s how the Magic Marty and Mysterious Matt Lunch Show began. We’ve been a magic team for three months now. It turns out that instead of a fake magician, Marty is a real friend.

6 . Complaining happens a lot, probably much more than we even realize. Complaining is easy to do, but it’s not good for us. Doctors have found that people who complain about their health can actually worsen the symptoms of their disease.     1    People who complain frequently can end up losing friends because of their complaints.

If complaining is so harmful, why do we complain? Many people complain to get attention.     2     Sometimes we complain as a way of connecting with others, starting a conversation. We can complain to make ourselves look better by comparison. There are lots of excuses for complaining.

3    It’s harder to find the positive or just stay quiet. Maya Angelou once said, “If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.”

You can have gratitude (感激) or take action to find solutions rather than just complain about problems.     4    It can lead to a new vision. Robert Kennedy once said, “There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”

But how can you stop yourself from complaining? It requires a plan. You could start by not complaining about anything for a week. It won’t be easy but it can be done. When we stop complaining about what’s missing in our lives and start being thankful for all we have, life changes for the better.     5

A.Anyone can complain.
B.So, complain no more!
C.Complaining makes no sense.
D.Complaining does harm to health.
E.Complaining also hurts our relationships.
F.Dissatisfaction does not have to lead to complaining.
G.They use complaining as a means to draw attention to themselves.

7 . How to Meet New People

Everybody knows that first impressions are important. If you want to know how to meet people, just follow these steps.

●Live in the moment.

To meet new people, the first thing you have to do is to enjoy the present moment of the new conversation. Let go of your expectations and fears.     1

When you meet a new person, don’t ask yourself, “How do I look?” or “How do I sound?” Instead, ask, “What would this person like to talk about?” “What matters to this person?”

    2

If you keep up your confidence, people feel that you’re a person who is worth talking to. You should be confident before you walk into a room with new people in it and build your confidence as the conversation goes along. Just smile, talk about the things that you love, and show everyone that you love who you are, where you are, and what you do.

3     Stand tall, maintain eye contact, and don’t fidget with your hands or look at the floor. When you introduce yourself, speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard.

●Be positive.

4    You should smile from time to time. Talk about the things you love, the things that make you happy, and your interests to keep people engaged.

Don’t talk about your long-standing hatred for a certain person.     5     The occasional “That’s so true!” or “I know exactly what you mean!” will be far more positive.

A.Stay confident.
B.Body language can help you stay confident.
C.Don’t ask for the person’s number in the middle of the conversation.
D.Don’t nod and agree with what the person is saying every five seconds.
E.Communicate in a fun and casual way.
F.Maintaining a positive attitude will make people want to talk to you.
G.They can prevent a conversation from going smoothly.

8 . For each working person, the rarest resource is your daily time. You may feel like that you do not have enough hours in the day, only endless things to do. Of course, some of these things are not part of your job, such as other colleagues asking for your help or bosses making new demands.

How can we reasonably refuse them?

1     Just by doing the following three steps, you can usually make yourself and the other person comfortable while refusing them.

◆ Listen patiently to others’ requests

It’s not simply hearing what the other person is saying. You have to stop what you’re doing and carefully listen to what they say.     2     The point is to let the other person see that you are willing to help, and let them understand that you’ve already known their needs. In this way, even if you eventually refuse them, they’ll understand that you are not available, instead of not willing to help.

    3

When we listen, we all hope that other people will come to a conclusion quickly. But when we speak, we instinctively(本能地)start from the beginning of the story. In fact, this way of speaking is not good for communication. So if you want to refuse somebody, just tell them No, and then explain the reasons why.

◆ Provide an alternative solution

Maybe you really don’t have the time to listen to the other person’s request. In situations like this, don’t just tell the other person that you don’t have the time.     4     For example, you may say, “Sorry, I really don’t have the time right now. Is it OK if we talk tomorrow morning?” In this way, although you refuse him, he still can feel your support.

In conclusion, refusal is unavoidable, but you can choose the way to refuse. An inappropriate refusal may cause great harm to your working life.    5    .

A.Begin with conclusion when refusing.
B.Start from the beginning when refusing.
C.Even if your time is limited, it is best for you to do so.
D.Instead, you should give them a time when you would be available.
E.In addition, this willing-to-help attitude also shows leadership skills.
F.In fact, there has been a mature methodology (科学方法) for this matter since long ago.
G.An artistic refusal, on the other hand, may lead you to some unexpected benefits.

9 . People all need friends because nobody wants to be lonely and a friend can help you in good and bad times. You have made friends since childhood, but you still don’t know who your true friends are. Here are some signs to tell you if your friend is a true friend:

Always honest

Honesty is important to keep a relationship alive. A true friend always tells you the truth. It may be hard sometimes but lying can destroy a friendship. It is important that your friend speaks honestly and never makes up stories.

There are always periods in your life when you have problems or difficulties. A true friend will always have time to listen to your problems and give advice. It may not be able to offer a solution to your problems but the fact that your friend made time to listen is a sign he/she cares for you. Your friend is not a true friend if he/she can never make time for you when you are in trouble. You also need to be reasonable and accept that your friend also has other things to do so he/she can’t always listen immediately to your problems.

Always respectful (尊敬的)

A true friend will always respect your opinion no matter whether he/she agrees or not. Your true friend may disagree but never insists that he/she is correct.

Always understanding

It is possible that some problems will arise between you and your friend. A true friend will always be forgiving (体谅的) and understanding even if it isn’t his/her fault. We are all different people and we all make mistakes. A true friend is always forgiving and understanding because he/she doesn’t want to take the risk of losing his/her best friend.

1. What’s the best title for the third paragraph?
