1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Juju was the star dancer at school. She had a smile that would light up the room and movements as if she was creating the music. But when she was away from her high school dance class, she was more quiet, a little bit cautious — something the group of girls in her class noticed.

In fact, Juju’s real name is Julie. Raised up as an orphan (孤儿), she experienced a lack of familial support, which contributed to her sense of loneliness. More often than not, she hid behind the nickname, creating a bright character that covered up the pain she was experiencing. Julie kept schoolmates at a distance but let Juju out when the music was on. Though as an excellent dancer, her biggest regret was that none of her family ever came to watch her performances. She would watch sadly as other students were greeted with flowers and hugs from parents after the performances.

Observing Julie’s closed nature outside of the dance room, Corrina, one of the other dance students, sensed her need for companionship. When she found her at lunchtime sitting alone, Corrina would invite Julie to join her table with other dance kids, including her as a member of their extended “family”. At first, they talked about dance and music. As the conversation turned to family, Juju would quickly shift the subject back to dance.

Despite this initial hesitance, trust between the girls gradually developed, and then a sister-like bond. They started spending more time together, not just in dance-related activities but also in their personal lives.

As their high school years ended, the closing night performance for graduation was around the corner. While everyone was filled with excitement, Corrina sensed Julie’s anxiety as curtain time approached. She knew Julie feared the post-show loneliness of having no family to celebrate with. So she took it upon herself to ensure that Julie didn’t feel alone on this important night.

The Most Precious Gift

In the sixth grade, our teacher assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friend without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly make friends with and support over the next five school days.

However, by the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationery sets (文具) on our friend’s desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving snacks, candies and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends, except me.

My friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley-face pictures claiming that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. My friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts made me wonder what was up with whoever had pulled my name.

On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed that there was a package on my desk. I eagerly unwrapped it and stared down at my desk. There sat a hand-made rabbit, wearing blue dark clothes with messy ears. Beside it was a note, saying “Your favorite rabbit. Hope you will like it.” The girls sitting near me made fun of the “odd and ugly” gift I had received and laughed at me. I felt my face turn red, angrily threw it into the desk and dashed out of the classroom. The moment I was out, someone called my name. She was Mary, a girl who was shy and always sat at the corner of the classroom.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.

“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”

“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to a party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not toinvite Lucy to the party. ”“She never even talks to me! ”

Dad sighed and moved down the aisle ( 走廊). “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her old friends behind and now she has to try to make new friends. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone. ”

“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!" Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes (翻白眼).

“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!"

On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope (缰绳).

Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing (想象)various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy. The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

December 24 arrived along with a heavy snow. It was my first Christmas Eve without my mother, and the days with excitement had disappeared.

I was extremely sad and could not control my feeling of missing my mother when the telephone rang. I ignored it and went to my bedroom to bury the continuous sadness, knowing it must be my friend Jenny calling. How could I be joyful? I wanted to be left alone.

My heart felt as heavy as the falling snow. How can I stop missing my mother?

I looked through the window. Seeing Jenny’s car parked out front, I went back to my bed and drew the covers over my head.

“Lucy!” she shouted, “I know you’re there. Answer the door, please!”

“Leave me alone!” I shouted back. I heard paper rustling (沙沙响) as she put something under the door.

“Merry Christmas!” she called out.

Not answering the door made me feel even worse. It wasn’t fair to my best friend. Her father and sister died in a car accident when she was eight years old. As a result, her mother had to return to work and Jenny was left to look after herself.

After she left, I carried the small package, sat down and opened it. Inside was a golden pen and a journal. When I opened the journal’s front cover, out fell a bookmark with a message written on it:

Dear Lucy,

My words won’t heal (治愈) the pain. But your own words can.

Love,

Jenny

As I stared at the journal’s blank pages, a single tear fell on the page. After calming myself down, I picked up the phone and dialed her number.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sherry Anne Lipski was born and raised in New York City. Sherry loved the city. It was her home. And most of her closest friends lived just a few blocks away. She could call any of them and, in minutes, they could gather together at the ice cream shop, pizza place, or one of the local playgrounds. When Sherry’s friends got a message from her to meet at the playground, they knew what she wanted to do: play handball.

American handball is a popular game, most often played in cities, especially New York. It is kind of like tennis except there is no net. Sherry could play handball for hours and hours. With that much practice, she became the best player in her entire neighborhood, winning every time she walked onto a court. Her friends would challenge her, even though knowing that they would definitely lose, but played anyway just to have some fun.

Toward the end of her fourth grade, her parents told Sherry some very upsetting news.

“Sherry, her mother began, worried that her daughter might cry.” Your father has been given a wonderful new job by the company he works for.

“Yes, Sherry,” her father added. “I’m very excited about it. It’s a promotion, which means we can have a much more comfortable life together.”

“OK...” Sherry was unsure why they were speaking to her in such a way when it sounded like good news. Then it became clear.

“Unfortunately,” her mother said, “we have to move to Pennsylvania where your father has been asked to work.”

“We know that you’ll miss your New York home, Shey,” said her dad. “But you’re a wonderful young lady. We know you will make some new friends there.”

Sherry began to cry right away. Her parents comforted her, but she drowned herself in sadness, especially when she thought of saying goodbye to all of her childhood friends and the neighborhood where she grew up.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Doris drew back the curtain in her living room and looked out onto the wet street. She felt happy when the sunlight appeared. If it didn’t stop raining, it would ruin her day. Her mother had promised to drive her to the Fashion Fair if it was sunny. Doris was desperate to go there because she had to replace a Nike jacket.

Earlier that Wednesday afternoon, Eddie, the most popular seventh-grader, had given Doris his jacket and asked her to keep an eye as he would play basketball in a hurry. Doris was glad to be of help.

During her last class, the biology teacher made them cut apart dead frogs. For fear of getting blood on Eddie’s jacket, Doris folded it and placed it on a chair. Then she took the knife and cut the skin quickly. She felt sick when opening the frog’s belly (腹部).

When the bell rang, Doris hurried out because the bus she caught for home left ten minutes after school. She raced to board the bus and found a seat. After a few minutes the driver started the engine and drove away when Doris looked out of the window and saw Eddie. “The jacket!” she screamed. She shot from her seat and ran up to the driver. “You’ve got to stop! I forgot Eddie’s jacket!” “Who’s Eddie? I don’t know Eddie,” the driver said angrily. “Sit down.”

All that evening she was upset and blamed her biology teacher for her problem. If he hadn’t made them dissect (解剖) frogs, she wouldn’t have been so absent-minded. The next day Doris rushed from the bus to the biology room. The jacket was not there!?

“How can I ever tell Eddie?” She closed her eyes. She spent most of her break and lunch period in the restroom, brushing her hair and worrying. On Friday she stayed at home to avoid Eddie. Next Tuesday was her mother’s birthday, so she told her mother she wanted to go shopping to buy her a gift for her birthday. Actually, she wanted to buy a Nike jacket with her life savings at the Fashion Fair.

As Good As You

When Jenna’s taekwondo (跆拳道) instructor, Ms. Baroni, introduced Marti, Jenna’s best friend, to everyone, Jenna, was so excited that Marti would be taking lessons with her.

Class started with warm-up exercises, and then Ms. Baroni divided everyone into color-belt groups. Seeing Marti become red in face and play with the edge of her shirt, Ms. Baroni told the friends to work together, even though Jenna was a yellow belt and a level above Marti, making Marti less nervous on her first day. It suited Jenna fine. She couldn’t wait to demonstrate some basic kicks to Marti. Marti copied her kick as high as Jenna’s shoulder. “Great job, Marti!” said Ms. Baroni, who had walked up behind them. She then spent the next five minutes working with Marti, teaching her how to straighten her leg and snap her foot out to make the legs form a square. Jenna collapsed against the wall and watched Marti copy everything Ms. Baroni did.

The more Marti did, the more praise she earned from Ms. Baroni, and so the more half heartedly Jenna practiced. What if Marti became better than her? What if Marti became Ms. Baroni’s favorite student? “Watch your form!” Who is Ms. Baroni scolding? Jenna wondered. She turned and saw Ms. Baroni looking directly at her. Nothing could have been worse. “Jenna, your side kick could be better than that”, said Ms. Baroni with a slight frown, “You’ve memorized your form perfectly, but your moves are sloppy (马虎的). Make the legs fully extended, point the toes downward, and try again.”

At the end of the class, Jenna grabbed her bag and hurried outside to find her mom. She had planned to wait and say good-bye to Marti, but now she wanted to be alone. For the next several weeks, Marti continued to impress their teacher with her skills. And as Marti turned into a star student, Jenna became less and less excited about taekwondo.

I started my dormitory life this year and met my roommate Kate. In the process of getting along, we found that we both enjoy reading and watching science fictions. With similar hobbies, our relationship immediately became closer. We went to class and canteen together every day in pairs.

Although we considered each other as the best friend, there were frictions in our life style. I was never very neat, while Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything.

Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other and never stopped trying to change the other person’s life style. Our friendship went ups and downs like a boat on the sea. Dissatisfaction with the other was accumulating.

War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I was rather irritated (激怒). How could she act like that? I could not control my temper either. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. Neither of us was willing to calm down to be a good listener.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her dear grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, burying her face. From where I stood, I saw her back slightly up and down. Obviously, she was sobbing. That was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly I began to move.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Mo was waiting in the corridor outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day and physics was first. She really hated physics. It was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front of the line, and then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything…Miss Perfect!

Terry was Mo’s friend and had promised to help her review for the physics exam. However, she hadn’t spoken to Mo for two weeks now and also ignored all of Mo’s calls and texts. And when Mo rang her house, her mum just told her she was busy. “She’s forgotten who her friends are!” thought Mo angrily.

“Are you listening to me?” Mr. Reed was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. With a worried look, Mo followed them.

Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting two rows in front of her. Mo couldn’t believe it! Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Terry always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Terry, but she didn’t know what to do. She thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her?

“Stop writing and put your pens down.” said Mr. Reed, as he started to collect the exam papers. Oh no! Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!

Mo wanted to talk to Terry at lunch time, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Mo’s favourite subject but she wasn’t feeling good. Mo went to the library to study, but she couldn’t concentrate. She didn’t know what to do about Terry. Just then, Mr. Reed walked past her table. “Mr. Reed, I need to tell you something…” said Mo.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There’s a small, brown brick house, almost hidden by evergreens in front that I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special to me, but rather the person who lives inside. After I parked my car, I knocked on the door and heard a singsong voice inviting me in.

“It’s me, Miss C,” I said as I took off my coat.

“Put your boots under the heater, lovey,” she said as she slowly appeared in the hallway with her walker.

We gave each other a long, tight hug.

I met Miss C about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. My parents reassured me I could start school when I was 4. However, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September.

My classmates and I knew our teacher deeply cared about us. For me, that is the mark of an extraordinary educator — one who instills (灌输) both the love for learning within their students and the excitement of going to school.

Miss C created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be in that moment: a painter, a construction worker, a dancer, a writer. One spring morning, we were overjoyed by the arrival of baby chick eggs. We named and cared for them for a few weeks. After they hatched, we became keen scientists carefully documenting their development through pictures and words in our egg journals. We also made handicrafts with empty yogurt containers, which Miss C collected or we brought from home.

I loved her and I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher just like her. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Miss C to my classroom. For years, Miss C volunteered in my classroom. I felt fortunate to learn about teaching from her. I looked forward to our conversations as colleagues and friends.

Next month she will move to Cuba and the time to sell her house is near. I came here to pack up things for her.
