1 . SMART Goal Setting

SMART goal setting is one of the most valuable methods used by high achievers today to actualize(实现)their life goals time after time. SMART is an acronym (首字母缩略词) that stands for-Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound.     1

Every goal ought to be specific. Being clear about your goals and expectations is the first step to reaching them.     2     For example, “I will start planning toward retirement” is vague. Instead, you could say. “I will start planning toward retirement by building up a nest egg.” This is more specific. When you are specific on your goal, it’s easier for you to identify all its components and work accordingly toward achieving it.

3     If you can’t measure something, you can’t tell if you’re performing well or if you’re off track. Setting measurable goals lets you evaluate your performance and stay on track.

Goals should be achievable and realistic.     4     It’s also important not to get too carried away and use far-fetched or unreachable goals as motivators, constantly chasing an impossibly high goal. Allow yourself to feel motivated by the satisfaction of achievement and real progress.

Each goal has to be time-bound.     5     Actually, it’s incredibly important to make your goals time-bound. The act of having deadlines set to your goals is a motivation that drives you into action. Without a deadline, it is not possible for you to know if you’re making headway with your goals.

A.Your goals must be measurable.
B.That is because your goals are not specific enough.
C.It is the final letter of SMART that is often ignored.
D.When goals are too wide or vague, they are easy to miss.
E.To make your SMART goals work, use the following tips.
F.You may wonder if this is achievable in the given time frame.
G.It’s important to plan out goals that are within realistic capabilities.

2 . One summer my friend and I decided to go to Italy for a holiday and we decided to travel there without going through a travel agency. You know, you would be submerged (淹没) in crowds of tourists and lose lots of opportunities to get familiar with the country more closely. We started to think over our trip and managed to come up with a free tour of Italy.

The trip was not very long but it was still very impressive. We look forward to going there again! Of course, we spent lots of time arranging the trip, but it was well worth it!   Of course I was afraid that something would go wrong and I was especially anxious about my visa, but everything went quite smoothly in the end.

The most difficult part was getting a visa without an invitation. In the Italian consulate(领事馆), one must hand in some official papers proving that one has a hotel booked for oneself in order to get the visa. Then we had to solve the ticket problem. Airlines often sell cheap tickets and we bought ours far in advance. The next step was to book a hotel. We finally booked a hotel about thirty km away from the heart of Rome and it was the perfect choice for our trip.

Every day we took a train that carried us to the heart of Rome. Our big house, which was surrounded by the forest, was a rare place for the fresh air and absolute silence, beautiful views, hospitable (好客的) hosts, comfortable living conditions delighted us to no end. Besides this, we were very lucky that our mistress was Russian. She gave us a lot of advice that was of great use. She told us what transport to choose and where the best places to go.

Don’t be afraid to arrange your trip by yourself. It’s not difficult! The only thing I’ll say right now is that we really enjoyed traveling by ourselves. We walked with a map and a guide-book to wherever we wanted and we even met some of our fellow countrymen on the way just two or three times. So, if you’re also planning a “single” trip, don’t forget to take a Russian-Italian phrasebook as people in Italy prefer to speak in their native tongue.

A.the reason why he chose to live in the center of Rome
B.the reason why the hotel he booked was the right choice

D.the reason why the mistress gave them some advice
4. From the text we can know the author _______.
A.enjoys traveling everywhere in the world

3 . In a room at Texas Children Cancer Center in Houston, eight-year-old Simran Jatar lay in bed with a drip(点滴)above her to fight her bone cancer. Over her bald(秃的)head, she wore a pink hat that matched her clothes. But the third grader’s cheery dressing didn’t mask her pain and weary eyes.

Then a visitor showed up. “Do you want to write a song?” asked Anita Kruse, 49, rolling a cart equipped with an electronic keyboard, a microphone and speakers. Simran stared. “Have you ever written a poem?” Anita Kruse continued. “Well, yes,” Simran said.

Within minutes, Simran was reading her poem into the microphone. “Some bird soaring through the sky,” she said softly. “Imagination in its head…” Anita Kruse added piano music, a few warbling (鸣,唱)birds, and finally the girl’s voice. Thirty minutes later, she presented Simran with a CD of her first recorded song.

That was the beginning of Anita Kruse’s project, Purple Songs Can Fly, one that has helped more than 125 young patients write and record songs. As a composer and pianist who had performed at the hospital, Kruse said that the idea of how she could help “came in one flash”.

The effect on the kids has been great. One teenage girl, curling(蜷缩)in pain in her wheelchair, stood unaided to dance to a hip-hop song she had written. A 12-year-old boy with Hodgkin’s disease who rarely spoke surprised his doctors with a song he called I Can Make It.

“My time with the kids is heartbreaking because of the severity of their illnesses,” says Anita Kruse. “But they also make you happy, when the children are smiling, excited to share their CD with their families.”

Simran is now an active sixth grader and cancer-free. From time to time, she and her mother listen to her song, Always Remembering, and they always remember the “really sweet and nice and loving” lady who gave them a shining moment in the dark hour.

1. What do we know about Anita Kruse’s project?
A.It helps young patients record songs.
B.It is intended to kill time for patients.
C.It aims to replace the medical treatment.
D.It offers patients chances to realize their dreams.
2. What does the case of a 12-year-old boy suggest?
A.Most children are naturally fond of music.
B.The project has a positive effect on young patients.
C.He was brave enough to put up performance.
D.Singing is the best way to treat some illnesses.
3. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A.Purple Songs Can FlyB.Singing Can Improve Health
C.A Shining Moment in LifeD.A Kind Woman—Anita Kruse

4 . Probably the hardest part of setting goals is the first step of actually deciding to take action! The first barrier that most people face is the incorrect assumption(假设) that goals are only for business people. The reality is that everyone sets goals mentally throughout the day. There are always occasions where something has to be done at a particular time or in a particular place. Simple examples could be getting up at a certain time in order to be at work, or to meet with a friend for an activity.

The beauty of having goals is the uniqueness of each one to the goal setter. Whether it is personal, financial, or business, they are all specific to that person and their situation.

The most important part is to write them down. Having goals written down gives you power while helping you to focus on this area.

Aim for something that will stretch you while remaining achievable. If you achieve your goal too easily, it is not high enough to make any significant change in your life. On the other hand, if you consistently miss the goals, consider setting them a little lower as you will only get discouraged and probably give up. The aim is to keep you growing and moving into a more satisfactory position.

As you reach the levels that you have set for yourself, always include a small reward at each point. This might only be a small thing in the early days like a meal out or a weekend vacation.

Remember that these changes will not happen overnight and there will be a period of time when nothing seems to be happening. This is why the goals need to be detailed and as specific as possible with a result and benefit.

Allow some time on a daily basis to educate yourself on how to make the necessary adjustments in your life. This could include listening to a CD, or reading a book, etc.

A simple method to start with could be one goal in the main areas of life to be achieved in one month, six months, twelve months or five years. Break that down further into a daily, weekly and monthly system. Stay focused and stick to achieving all that you desire.

1. The main examples in Paragraph 1 tell us that ________.
A.goals are set mostly for important things
B.most people know when it is time to set goals
C.people can set goals to get things done all the time
D.it is necessary to get goals once in a while
2. The charm of having goals is that each goal is ________.
A.importantB.achievableC.specialD.meaningful
3. A good goal is one that is ________.
A.easy enough for you to feel niceB.high enough yet achievable
C.always in a satisfactory positionD.changed again and again

5 . By far the most common difficulty in study is simple failure to get down to regular concentrated work. This difficulty is much greater for those who do not work to a plan and have no regular routine of study. Many students muddle along, doing a bit of this subject or that,as the mood takes them,or letting their set work pile up until the last possible moment.
Few students work to a set timetable. They say that if they did work out a timetable for themselves they would not keep to it,or would have to change it frequently, since they can never predict from one day to the next what their activities will be.
No doubt some students take much more kindly to a regular routine than others. There are many who shy away from a self-controlled weekly timetable, and dislike being tied down to a fixed program of work. Many able students state that they work in cycles. When they become interested in a topic they work on it attentively for three or four days at a time.On other days they avoid work completely. It has to be admitted that we do not fully understand the motivation to work. Most people over 25 years of age have become used to a work routine, and the majority of really productive workers set aside regular hours for the more important areas of their work. The “tough-minded” school of workers doesn’t fully accept the idea that good work can only be done naturally, under the influence of inspiration.
Those who believe that they need only work and study __________ have a mistaken belief either in their own talent or in the value of “freedom”.Freedom from control and discipline leads to unhappiness rather than to “self-expression” or “personality development”.Our society insists on regular habits, timekeeping and punctuality (being on time),and whether we like it or not,if we mean to make our way in society,we have to meet its demands.
1. The most widespread problem in applying oneself to study is __________ .
A.changing from one subject to another
B.the failure to keep to a set timetable of work
C.the unwillingness to work out a systematic plan
D.working on a subject only when one feels like it
2. Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Many students are not interested in using a self-controlled timetable.
B.Many students don’t like being told to study to a fixed timetable.
C.Most people over 25 years of age don’t work to a set timetable.
D.Tough-minded people agree that good work is done naturally.
3. The underlined part “as the fit takes them” means __________.
A.when they have the energy
B.when they are in the mood
C.when they feel fit
D.when they find conditions suitable
4. A suitable title for the passage might be __________.
A.Attitudes to Study
B.A Study Plan
C.The Difficulties of Studying
D.Study and Self-discipline

6 . McDonald's is the world single biggest food provider with annual sales of around $12.4bn. And the company's symbol Ronald McDonald is now (or so the company claims) the world's most recognized person after Santa Claus.
The first McDonald's restaurant was opened in San Bernardino, California, in 1948 by brothers Mac and Richard “Dick” McDonald. Mac ran the restaurant side; Dick was the marketing genius. He had already invented the drive-in laundry and had been the first person to use neon lights in advertising. Now he spotted the gap in the post-war, baby-boom market for cheap, family-orientated restaurants with simple menus, standardized food and efficient service.
After a slow start, business began to boom. By 1954, the brothers were joined by another entrepreneur, a kitchen equipment salesman called Ray A Kroc who owned the franchise to the Multimixer, milk shake maker used throughout the McDonald's chain. A year later, Kroc had bought the McDonald brothers' chain of 25 franchises for the equivalent of around $70m(£44m). Dick remained with the company until the Seventies, when he and Kroc fell out over Kroc's claim that the chain was his creation.
Today, an almost Stalinist cult of personality surrounds Kroc (who died in 1984) at McDonald's, while the brothers who gave the company its name have all but been written out of its history. But though Kroc did not found McDonald's, he was certainly responsible for the empire-building philosophy which led to its world domination. He ushered in such essential contributions to international cuisine as the Big Mac (1968) and the Egg McMuffin (1973); and helped launch Ronald McDonald —— “in any language he means fun” —— on to television in 1963.
Every three hours, a new McDonald's franchise opens somewhere in the world; it can be found in more than 100 countries including India (vegetarian-only to avoid offending the non-beef-eating populace) and Israel (non kosher, despite fierce local objection). McDonald's chain embodied the thrusting, can-do spirit of Fifties America with staff mottoes such as “If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean.”
