2 . “Tooth loss and gum disease, which is inflammation (发炎) of the tissue around the teeth that can cause shrinkage (萎缩) of the gums and loosening of the teeth, are very common, so evaluating a potential link with brain diseases is incredibly important. Our study found that these conditions may play a role in the health of the brain area that controls thinking and memory, giving people another reason to take better care of their teeth,” said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi, Ph.D. of Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan.

The study involved 172 people with an average age of 67 who did not have memory problems at the beginning of the study. Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which was the same for people with severe gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging. By contrast, for people with severe gum disease, the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain aging.

“These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth,” Yamaguchi said. Though the study does not prove that gum disease or tooth loss causes diseases like Alzheimer’s, it only shows an association. Yamaguchi added, “Future studies are needed with larger groups of people.” The current experiment involved only a small group of people in one region of Japan, and that too from one particular region of the world.

1. What does Satoshi Yamaguchi’s research focus on?

A.Supporting evidence for the research results.
B.Basic theories and results of a previous research.
C.A further explanation of the research methods.
D.The detailed procedures of the scientific research.
3. What does Yamaguchi suggest people do?
A.Treat a brain problem with replacing teeth.
B.Frequently visit the dentists to maintain teeth.
C.Protect gums and teeth in their original good state.
D.Pull out one of their unique teeth as a study object.
4. What probably can be involved in the follow-up study?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了Osci Boateng通过一辆移动的移动诊所为人们提供医疗服务,并解释了他这么做背后的原因以及这辆车所取得的一些成绩。

3 . Growing up in a small village in southern Ghana, Osci Boateng watched many of his family members and neighbors struggle to access basic health care. In many regions of the country, it can take hours to get to the nearest hospital. Boateng said many people lost their lives due to preventable or treatable diseases. His grandmother and aunt were among them.

Feeling an urgent call to help, Boateng decided he would make it his life’s mission to bring health care to remote communities in Ghana where education and preventative health care were lacking.

Boateng wanted to find a way to remove these barriers to health care access and education. He started his nonprofit organization, OKB Hope Foundation. In 2021, he converted (转变) a van (面包车) into a mobile doctor’s office and started bringing health care directly to those in need. A few times a week, the mobile clinic and medical team travel long distances to remote communities and provide free routine medical care.

On each trip, Boateng’s team consists of a nurse, a physician assistant, a doctor, and an operation assistant. In the van, they can run basic labs like bloodwork and urinalysis (尿液分析) as well as provide medicine. “It’s like a one-stop shop for people, ” said Boateng, adding that most of the people they see have one health issue or another. Since its launch, the Hope Health Van has served more than 4,000 Ghanaians across more than 45 rural communities who otherwise don’t have easily accessible medical care, according to Boateng.

Boateng has gone all in on his OKB Hope Foundation, recently quitting his job to dedicate his time to bringing health care to his home country. But for him, the sacrifices (牺牲) are well worth. “Words cannot describe the feeling that you provide care for someone who otherwise wouldn’t be alive if your mobile health van wasn’t there.” He has big plans for the future. He hopes to expand them to provide more consistent and high-quality medical care not only to those living in remote areas of Ghana but those in other countries.

1. What is the purpose of mentioning the example in paragraph 1?
A.To show the importance of life.B.To describe how hard Boateng’s family lived.
C.To point out what’s wrong with the hospital.D.To stress the seriousness of lacking health care.
2. How does Boateng carry out his mission?
A.He operates on patients in the van.B.He rents a doctor’s office wherever he goes.
C.He provides medical care by charging some fees.D.He offers people health care using mobile clinic.
3. What do we know about the Hope Health Van?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一种治疗癌细胞的绿色方法,这种方法不会对患者产生伤害,不会产生有害废物,也没有放射性,具有很好的应用前景。

5 . The liver (肝脏) cleans the blood and helps remove poison from the body. But liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world, and now researchers are developing a new form of treatment. They say it reduces the chances of harming the patient.

This treatment involves the use of natural, non-poisonous chemicals from plants. That is why the researchers call it a “green” method for fighting cancer.

Kattesh Katti is a professor of radiology and physics at the University of Missouri’s School of Medicine. For more than 10 years, he has studied the use of nanotechnology (纳米技术) to fight cancer.

Nanotechnology is the science of making things unimaginably small. For this study, Katti used extremely small objects to target and destroy cancer cells in the livers of mice and human cells in the laboratory.

Kattesh Katti used very small particles (颗粒) of gold. The gold was covered in a protective material. He says the particles attract cancer cells. Those cells are far more affected by lower levels of heat than healthy cells.

Once the particles travel to and connect with the cells, they are heated with a laser. That destroys the cancer cells, but the healthy ones around them live.” The patient will be administered with these nano particles. Within a couple of hours, the patient will be treated with lasers, and then the patient can go home. So, there is no radioactivity. There is no harmful waste. There is no bad effect on the patient.”

What that means is that the patient would not have the same side effects that one can have from radiation and chemotherapy (化疗).Chemotherapy drugs often are poisonous. While they kill off the cancer cells, they are also poisonous to the healthy cells and the patient can get very sick.

1. Why is the new form of treatment called a “green” method?
A.It avoids the opportunities of hurting the patient.
B.Chemicals used in treatment are natural and harmless.
C.It helps clean the blood and remove poison from the body.
D.Plants are directly used to treat the patient without other medicine.
2. What can we know about Katti according to the text?
A.He has been a professor in cancer research for over a decade.
B.He used nanotechnology to make small particles into gold.
C.He used nanotechnology to kill cancer cells in the hospital.
D.He thinks nano particles can treat cancer patients more effectively
3. What’s Katti’s attitude toward the new method of treatment?
A.Doubtful.B.Uncaring.C.Positive.D.Worried.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.Can fighting cancer be green?B.Researchers can deal with liver cancer
C.Liver cancer is not a big problemD.Which is better, radiation or chemotherapy?

6 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

These days, doctors are using a new approach to healing, which is called tapping. This approach combines     1     (wise) from Chinese medicine with talk therapy (治疗).

By simply tapping points along the body while     2     (confirm) your emotional state, you can release cellular energy. By feeling those emotions, you process and clear them through     3     power of love and forgiveness. Tapping provides a healthy way to process difficult emotions, even from experiences that     4     (happen) in the distant past. The practice draws from acupuncture (针灸), a healing method from     5     (tradition) Chinese medicine that dates from thousands of years ago.

Acupuncture opens energy highways in the body by sticking thin needles into the skin. Tapping takes a similar approach, but uses touch instead of needles     6     (promote) the flow of energy throughout the body. It may sound strange or impossible     7     first glance. But scientists believe that the method works because it excites the central nervous system,     8     causes the body to release helpful chemicals.

Everyone may have experienced some sorts of emotional discomfort in their lives. Although painful, it’s important to develop healthy ways to process their     9     (experience). Healing practices like tapping help release these emotions,     10     (active), so you can process and heal from difficult emotions.

7 . Natural Therapy(疗法)

The great outdoors: it’s the place to head for when you’re in need of peace and quiet, open spaces, beautiful scenery and exercise. Whether a huge mountain range or a local country park, these natural areas are perfect for us to refresh ourselves when we live a stressful life.     1    .

As an example, in the foothills of the Snowdonia National Park in the UK, specialist therapy sessions are held to help people who suffer from depression, anxiety and stress.    2     Actually, it’s believed that the setting alone can improve the mood of patients. Art psychotherapist Pamela Stanley told the BBC that there was a “growing body of evidence” to support eco-therapy.

It’s true that for most of us connecting with the natural world definitely lifts our spirits. But the mental health charity Mind says eco-therapy has been recognized as a formal type of treatment that can sometimes be prescribed to someone by a doctor. It doesn’t involve taking medication.    3    . This natural treatment can take on many forms, including doing yoga in a forest, gardening or even hugging a tree.

Evidence has shown there are many benefits of this “green” therapy.    4    . Dr. Rachel Bragg from the University of Essex calls it “psychological restoration” She told the BBC’s All in the Mind programme that nature-based therapies should be part of a “ toolkit” of care for patients.    5    . However, it is an option for therapists to use. And as we become more aware of the causes and effects of mental health, it’s good to know that help might lie outside our towns and cities, and that nature can give us a helping hand.

A.Of course, eco-therapy won’t cure everything.
B.The patients organize activities for relaxation.
C.Outdoor art-related activities are held for patients.
D.Instead, it just develops a person’s relationship with nature.
E.These include improving social contact, social and work skill.
F.In nature you can do many things, including reading papers and watching TV.
G.Their relieving power is being used more and more to treat mental health problems.
