1 . Top Tips for the Flu Season

It’s coming. I can feel it in the air. On the subway every time someone coughs, I look up to see if I can move a little further. As I exit the train, I immediately reach for hand wash to remove any of the dirt on my hands.    1

If you are young and healthy, it’s most likely that you will just feel uncomfortable for a week or two, miss some work or study. If you are elderly, have medical problems, or are a young child, you may not be so lucky.     2     Depending on the year, between 3,000 and 49,000 people die.

The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated(接种疫苗).     3     However, it still offers considerable protection. In adults, the vaccine is 59 percent protective on average. For children the story is better. Clearly, we need better vaccines but it’s still a really good idea to get vaccinated.

Can the flu shot give you the flu? You may have an arm pain or a little fever, but the injection does not contain a live virus and cannot give you the flu.

4     It isn’t clear how long protection lasts and if the vaccine protects against different flus for only one year.

Finally, here is some advice for what to do if you get the flu.

    5

• Stay at home until your fever has been gone for at least 24 hours. That will reduce the number of people you give this to.

Best wishes for a happy flu season!

A.Flu season is here, and I take it seriously.
B.Oftentimes giving flu shots is fast, easy and effective.
C.If you got the flu shot last year, do you need it this year?
D.If you have the symptoms, call your doctor to prescribe some medicine.
E.Flu symptoms usually include high fever, cough, sore throat and body aches.
F.Each year more than 200,000 people are staying in hospital due to the illness.
G.You may have heard that the flu vaccine didn’t work as well as we thought or would like.

2 . Patients in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease often struggle to remember recently learned information, meaning they forget things like important appointments or where they left their keys. But it seems that these memories are not lost. They are still filed away in the brain somewhere; they just can’t be easily accessed.

Now, researchers at MIT have developed a means of getting back memories in mice suffering from Alzheimer’s. The method relies on a technique that uses light to control genetically modified neurons (转基因神经元). Currently it is too early to be used in human trials as it involves inserting light emitting (发光) equipment into the subjects’ brains, but the same principles still apply, the researchers said.

“The important point is that this is evidence of concept. That is, even if a memory seems to be gone, it is still there. It’s a matter of how to get it back, ” said senior researcher Susumu Tonegawa.

The team took two groups of mice, one genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer’s and one healthy. They then placed them into a room and gave them a mild electric shock. All of the mice showed fear when put back in an hour later. When placed in the room a third time several days later, the Alzheimer’s mice acted normally. They had forgotten the shock.

The researchers were then able to bring back the memory of the shock by activating (激活) the cells in which the memories were stored. Even when the mice were put into an unfamiliar room, they showed fear when the cells associated with the shock were activated.

“Shortterm memory seems to be normal. But for longterm memory, these early Alzheimer’s mice seem to be damaged, ” said lead researcher Dheeraj Roy. “Or rather, there is indeed an access problem to the information.”

1. What can we learn about the researchers at MIT?
A.They are the pioneers of brain research.
B.They have used the method in human trials.
C.They can cure Alzheimer’s using the new method.
D.They can get back memories in mice with Alzheimer’s.
2. What do we know about the longterm memory of the early Alzheimer’s mice?
A.They can transform their brain cells.
B.They can’t learn new tricks well.
C.They can easily get back their memory.
D.They can’t access the information stored.
3. How did the researchers conduct their experiment firstly by testing the mice?
A.By dividing the mice into different groups.
B.By giving them a mild electric shock.
C.By studying their fear when placing into a room.
D.By analyzing their memories.
4. What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To introduce a method of a research.
B.To report the latest discovery about a disease.
C.To give advice on how to improve memory.
D.To explain how the brain stores information.

5 . It has been around for centuries, but up until very recently, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wasn’t fully accepted abroad. Proof of this can be found in The Treatment (《刮痧》), a 2001 film that tells the story of a Chinese man in the US who’s accused of abuse after he uses guasha, a form of TCM treatment, to cure his grandson’s disease.

During the last 10 years or so, however, TCM has been getting increasingly popular all over the world. A report released by the State Council Information Office on Dec. 6 says this style of health care, which includes different forms like herbal medicine and exercise, has spread to 183 countries and regions.

“We have set up 10 TCM centers outside China, and all of them are popular among locals,” Wang Guoqiang, head of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said at a news conference on Dec 6. “Governments of 86 countries and regions have signed agreements with the Chinese government on TCM corporation.”

One of the reasons behind the growing popularity of TCM is the increase of scientific research into it. And after Tu Youyou, the Chinese scientist who discovered the anti-malaria (抗疟疾) drug qinghaosu (青蒿素), won the Nobel Prize in 2015, TCM became even more famous internationally.

However, all these achievements in TCM don’t mean that it’s problem-free. Over the years, TCM has faced challenges in being able to prove that it has certain effects.

Some researchers have suggested TCM should be more exact and work together with Western medicine.

“Bringing together with Western medicine and TCM, rather than being in competition, is where the potential for great effects is,” said Bernhard Schwartlander, the China representative of the World Health Organization.

1. The film The Treatment is mentioned in the first paragraph to         .
A.introduce the film to readers
B.show TCM is increasingly popular
C.arouse readers’ interest in Western medicine
D.prove that TCM is not fully accepted in western countries

B.10 TCM centers abroad are all set up by locals
C.86 countries have cooperated with China on TCM
D.Tu Youyou’s success contributes to the popularity of TCM
3. According to Bernhard Schwartlander, TCM should         .
A.combine western medicineB.face no challenge at all
C.give an exact description of its effectsD.compete with western medicine
4. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.A report on TCMB.Opinions about TCM
C.TCM spreadsD.TCM & Western Medicine

6 . Employers and managers must never ignore the need for an office or industrial first aid kit. The federal government says that every workplace should be equipped with first aid kits and that employees should be taught first aid.

Good preparation can prevent unnecessary injury, lose of productivity(生产效率), or even law suits when a workplace emergency occurs.

An employer must first provide the proper number of first aid kits for his workers. Many kits are available for sale online by industrial first aid kit suppliers. Kits designed for ten workers cost about $15 and kits designed for fifty workers cost about $80. There are kits also available for a small office,a vehicle,or work sites. Kits should be stored in a portable(轻便的), durable, watertight container. Fix the kit to the wall so that it is easily seen and reached in an emergency. Include a list of kit's contents to ensure it is always fully stocked.

Show each worker where the kit is located and what tools it contains. Educate each worker about possible injuries and which ones will require immediate medical attention from professionals.

The American Red Cross sells industrial first aid kits that meet the United States' Occupational Safety and Health Administration's requirements. Several types of kits are available. 7 . It was a cold March day in High Point, North Carolina. The girls on the Wesleyan Academy softball team were waiting for their next turns at bat during practice, stamping their feet to stay warm. Eighth-grader Taylor Bisbee shivered (发抖) a little as she watched her teammate Paris White play. The two didn’t know each other well — Taylor had just moved to town a month or so before.

Suddenly, Paris fell to the ground. “Pairs’s eyes rolled back,” Taylor says. “She started shaking. I knew it was an emergency.”

It certainly was. Paris had suffered a sudden heart failure. Without immediate medical care, Paris would die. At first, no one moved. The girls were in shock. Then the softball coach shouted out, “Does anyone know CPR?”

CPR is a life-saving technique. To do CPR, you press on the sick person’s chest so that blood moves through the body and takes oxygen to organs. Without oxygen, the brain is damaged quickly.

Amazingly, Taylor had just taken a CPR course the day before. Still, she hesitated. She didn’t think she knew it well enough. But when no one else came forward, Taylor ran to Paris and began doing CPR. “It was scary. I knew it was the difference between life and death,” says Taylor.

Taylor’s swift action helped her teammates calm down. One girl called 911. Two more ran to get the school nurse, who brought a defibrillator, an electronic device (器械) that can shock the heart back into work. Luck stayed with them: Paris’s heartbeat returned.

“I know I was really lucky,” Paris says now. “Most people don’t survive this. My team saved my life.”

Experts say Paris is right: For a sudden heart failure, the single best chance for survival is having someone nearby step in and do CPR quickly.

Today, Paris is back on the softball team. Taylor will apply to college soon. She wants to be a nurse. “I feel more confident in my actions now,” Taylor says. “I know I can act under pressure in a scary situation.”

1. What happened to Paris on a March day?
A.She caught a bad cold.
B.She had a sudden heart problem.
C.She was knocked down by a ball.
D.She shivered terribly during practice.
2. Why does Paris say she was lucky?
A.She made a worthy friend.
B.She recovered from shock.
C.She received immediate CPR.
D.She came back on the softball team.
3. Which of the following words can best describe Taylor?
A.Enthusiastic and kind.

10 . Increasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by going online to diagnose their symptoms, order home health tests or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet pharmacies(药店). Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical care, especially if they lack health insurance. Or they may stay because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alcohol consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may also fear what they might learn about their health, or they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But playing doctor can also be a deadly game.
Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Internet for medical answers – most of them aren’t nearly skeptical enough of what they find. A 2012 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They shouldn’t. Look up “headache”, and the chances of finding reliable and complete information, free from a motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2015 Brown Medical School study. Of the 169 websites the researchers rated, only 16 scored as “high quality”. Recent studies found faulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet.
The problem is that most people don’t know the safe way to surf the Web. “They use a search engine like Google, get 18 trillion choices and start clicking. But that’s risky, because almost anybody can put up a site that looks authoritative(权威的), so it’d hard to know if what you’re reading is reasonable or not,” says Dr. Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.
1. According to the text, an increasing number of American _____.
A.are suffering from mental disorders
B.like to play deadly games with doctors
C.turn to Internet pharmacies for help
D.are skeptical about surfing medical websites
2. Some Americans stay away from doctors because they _____.
A.are afraid to face the truth of their health
B.prefer to be diagnosed online by doctors
C.find medical devices easy to operate
D.are afraid to misuse their health insurance
3. According to the study of Brown Medical School, ______.
A.more than 6 million Americans distrust doctors
B.about 1/10 of the websites surveyed are of high quality
C.only 1/10 of medical websites aim to make a profit
D.72% of health websites offer incomplete and faulty facts
4. Which of the following is the author’s main argument?
A.It’s cheap to self-treat your own illness.
B.It’s dangerous to be your own doctor.
C.It’s reasonable to put up a medical website.
D.It’s embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.
