3 . When I first began running in high school on the track team, it made sense to carefully clock every mile and push myself to race for personal bests. But as I transitioned from running for sport to running for amusement as an adult, I found that tracking my workouts often just ended with frustration. And it wasn’t until my watch battery died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that comes with running for the pure joy of it. I never replaced the watch battery, and experts say that might not be a bad thing for my fitness goals.

This is the idea of unplugged(不插电的) running, which is gaining steam in the fitness community. And recent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it’s a smartwatch or fitness tracker, could actually improve your workout.

“People used to have an interest in their sport and got enjoyment out of the sport, but now that’s switching to the data,” said Eoin Whelan, a senior lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway. “They will compare themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running longer. And ultimately we know that makes them feel bad.”

Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are more likely to skip their workout if the batteries on their tracking device are dead.

In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just the casual jogger. Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch. He stopped tracking his pace years ago and only trains based on his effort and his overall running time: Getting rid of the pace tracking on his watch, as well as switching off other technology while he runs, has helped him get more “in tune” with his body.

“If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head,” Hofbauer said. “For me, the simpler, the better.”

1. What happened to the author when his running watch didn’t work?
A.He lost the desire to keep running every day.
B.He experienced running as a really fun activity.

D.He had great difficulty achieving his fitness goals.
2. What does Eoin Whelan think of running watches?
A.They can lead to hurtful comparisons.
B.The way people use them is different.
C.The data provided by them is not correct.
D.They can help enrich the wearers’ social life.
3. Why does the author mention Trevor Hofbauer in paragraph 5?
A.To show the popularity of running watch-free.
B.To encourage people to become professional runners.
C.To prove the positive effects of running watch-free.
D.To present professionals’ views on running watch-free.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.It is time to take off your running watch
B.The running watch is gaining more popularity

4 . During the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病), some people found their exercise was greatly reduced. However, it was an attraction for others to increase their physical activity. With the change of working from home, some physical activity was reduced. People took this newly freed up time as a chance to add exercise to their day, with online fitness programs and health apps (应用软件) reporting an increase.

However, the early drive to exercise appears to have been short-lived for many, with a study comparing activity levels between the first and second waves of COVID-19 in Victoria finding most people reported a reduction in their physical activity levels the second time around because of a shortage of encouragement. A study found that COVID-19 has reduced physical activity and increased sedentary (久坐不动的) behavior, and the effects could be lasting.

Continuing concerns about COVID-19 have led to carefulness about returning to public spaces such as gyms. But also, with many people changing their exercise habits and setting up home gyms during the pandemic, it’s become much more convenient to exercise at home. It’s clear for many of us that COVID-19 changed how and how much we exercise. But the changes don’t necessarily have to be for the worse.

People who changed to online workouts (锻炼), fitness apps and home gyms during the pandemic said their exercise was less satisfying, less enjoyable and they felt less active com-pared with doing exercise in gyms. Besides the physical effects, people reported missing the social communication, friendship, and being avoidable of the gym. In-person classes also offer the advantages of management and instruction, which can help make sure workouts are completed safely and effectively.

However, online workouts, fitness apps and near-home workouts are likely here to stay, and offer many advantages, such as no need to travel to the gym and convenience, making it easy to fit in a workout while working and shouldering family responsibilities.

1. How do some people add exercise to their day during the pandemic?
A.By returning to public places.B.By driving to a lonely park.
C.By turning to the Internet.D.By taking face-to-face classes.
2. What can we learn about exercise during the pandemic from the text?
A.People have changed exercise habits.B.People like to build their home gym.
C.People strongly wish to exercise.D.People refuse to go back to public gyms.
3. What does paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A.The disadvantages of exercising at home.
B.The way to exercise during the pandemic.
C.The examples of good exercise at home.
D.The reasons for people changing home exercise.
4. What does the author think of exercising at home in the last paragraph?
A.It is difficult.B.It is worrying.
C.It is challenging.D.It is helpful.

6 . One of the most popular new outdoor activities is day hiking. For many first-time hikers, it’s important to learn the proper hiking tips and safety rules.     1     Here are some of the main ones to know.

Take out your own garbage. One of the biggest surprises for people new to the outdoors is that many parks and trails have no facilities; i.e., no restrooms or garbage cans.     2     You’re even supposed to ferry out poop (your own or your pet’s), unless you bury it 200 feet from the trail or any water source. Advisably, you can pack out trash with some zip top bags.

Don’t move things around. This means no taking home pretty rocks or flowers. Any time you move or remove something, you may destroy an animal s home or a weak ecosystem. Leaving things alone also applies to wildlife, so don’t try to pet a deer or approach a bear for a great photo.     3

4    Since hikers tend to head into the outdoors to enjoy all of the natural sights, sounds and smells, don’t blast music, talk loudly on the phone or bring along an uncontrolled pet. Being a considerate hiker also helps the resident wildlife, which may need undisturbed spaces and enough quiet to hear the sounds of nature for their communication and survival.

Know when to stay on and step off the trail. Hiking trails are created with specific purposes, which may include preventing pollution to environment and protecting precious plant and animal communities.     5     There are a few exceptions, such as leaving the trail to “use the restroom”.

A.Enjoy them from a safe distance.
B.Be considerate of your fellow hikers.
C.So stay on the trail as much as possible.
D.Communicate with other hikers politely.
E.That means you’re supposed to carry back out whatever you bring in.
F.Just as with any sport or activity, hiking involves certain accepted practices.
G.It’s also considered proper to step off the trail if you want to rest or have a snack.

10 . To keep social distancing and work at home during the pandemic (流行病) has led to less time moving around, and more time sitting and looking at screens. For many office workers, working at home means spending hours sitting at our desk.     1    . Therefore, exercise experts suggest things must be changed. Some tips here are to help you move more.

Start small

People trying to start exercising often get caught up in an “all or nothing” thinking which means either I do zero or I do two hours. And if I don’t get two hours, then it doesn’t count, or it’s not good enough.     2    . Going from no activity at all to even a little bit will indeed get some health effects.

    3

Part of developing a good exercise habit is to know yourself well. Knowing what’s possible and what’s not realistic for you. For instance, if you’re not a morning person, don’t plan to exercise in the morning. And if you hate running, don’t run just because someone tells you it’s good for you.     4    . Arranging with a friend to work out will help you avoid struggling to get started.

Walk whenever you can

Sitting less and walking more will make a big difference. Use your stairs instead of an elevator. And if you don’t have to go out, just walk room to room back and forth to get those extra steps. If you have a meeting, use the break of that meeting to walk around.     5

A.Make sure to know yourself well
B.Choose a suitable time for yourself
C.All these steps will count and be helpful
D.That’s a great place for everybody to walk
E.But five minutes is believed to be better than none
F.And it is ruining our health physically and mentally
G.You can think of possible ways for you to start or stick to
