2 . It’s very common these days for people to take some sort of regular exercise each week. But if you’ve never done it before, what’s the best way to go about it?     1     He or she will create a personalized plan for you based on your aims.

However, each hourly session can be steep considering you have to pay both the personal trainer and membership of the gym, too. So what’s left? Well, if you have the courage to do it, you can make your own plan. It’s relatively easy to do if you have the know-how.     2

First, keep your fitness goal in mind. Are you looking to slim down or increase your abilities? Whatever it is, make sure the things you choose to do are achieving that goal. Next, do your research.     3     Watch as many of these as possible, but make sure to be a little critical of them — everyone has a different physique and what works for one may not work for another. Finally, keep your feet on the ground.     4     It takes at least three months to see any realistic body changes. And don’t be overzealous(过度热衷的) — never work in pain   — a good workout is difficult and challenging, but never painful. Pain means you are damaging yourself.

If nothing else, focus on calisthenics (健身操).     5     Do as many of one exercise as you can without stopping, and then try and repeat that number twice more — make sure you sweat, and don’t forget to rest for a minute in between each activity!

A.Be patient with yourself and set realistic goals.
B.But before you do, here are some basic pointers.
C.Well, many people make use of a personal trainer.
D.They just don’t want to design their own workout plan.
E.These days, social media is full of fitness videos and advice.
F.Find a way to make each exercise more difficult as you get in shape.
G.These are the basic body movements which everyone can do anywhere.

3 . Running is a great way to get in shape and just about everyone can do it. Given that it's so easy to take up the sport, a lot of beginners jump right into running without actually knowing what it takes to establish a healthy routine.

1    . If you are just starting out, avoid the following things to help you increase your chances of running success.

Doing too much too soon

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is doing too much too soon. Picking up a new hobby like running is no doubt exciting. Runners need to ease into the sport before increasing the distance.    2    .

    3

Beginners might think they need to run nearly every day to meet their fitness or weight-loss goals, but this couldn't be further from the truth.    4    , especially for beginners whose muscles and bones haven't yet been conditioned for such intense (剧烈的) exercise. So it's important to give your body ample rest between workouts. Follow a training plan that includes rest days.

Comparing yourself to others

5    , You're excited about running, so you are probably reading running blogs, magazines and message boards where you might start to feel inadequate about your own running pace. Instead of getting down on yourself, remember that every runner was once a beginner and use their success as motivation!

A.Not running every day
B.Not taking rest days
C.Running is a demanding activity which can be really hard on your body
D.As mentioned, a healthy routine is what they attach importance to
E.When starting out with running, it's tough not to compare yourself to others
F.Many make a number of common mistakes, which can interfere (干扰) with training or lead to injury
G.It will help reduce the risk of injury, so you can continue with your new running routine

4 . Children used to be able to play freely, exploring and interacting with the natural world with little or no supervision(监督) by adults. They were free to invent games of their own. Nowadays, however, we control the lives of our children much more, giving them fewer chances for free play. Many children in England used to spend hours playing on their bikes, having all sorts of adventures, but this is now considered too dangerous. Some working families can't care for their children after school, so the children have to stay indoors or attend supervised after-school activities.

The result is that some children have little time for play any more and when they do it's often spent in front of the television or computer. In the past, children in Brazil played a game which involves spinning (旋转) a large seed with a hole in it to create a scream-like noise. They rarely play this game nowadays.

Studies show that outdoor environments help all people by reducing stress and creating a general feeling of well-being. When children play in the open air, they are more likely to have positive feelings about each other.

Outdoor environments are also important for children's development of independence. When playing outside, children can gradually increase the distance from adults. Adults are then more willing to trust their children, an important element in confidence-building which improves the relationship between child and parent.

Outdoors, children have more chances to use all their senses. They have greater freedom not only to run and shout, but also to interact with the environment. Activities which may not be allowed indoors are perfectly acceptable outdoors; children are free to play messy games out in the open air that just wouldn't be permitted in the home.

Children experience the natural environment differently from adults. Adults typically see nature as background to what they are doing, while for children it is a hands-on experience. The expensive toys and indoor educational games cannot substitute for the experience of direct interaction with nature. They cannot replace the sensation where a child's attention is suddenly caught by the sunlight through leaves or the gentle noise of water flowing by.

1. The author mentions a Brazilian game to show that _______.
A.it was common for children to invent games in the past
B.TV and computer are more popular than outdoor games
C.Brazilian children used to play outdoor games
D.children seldom play outdoors nowadays
2. How do adults react when their children become more independent?
A.They don't control the lives of their children anymore.
B.They have more confidence in their children.
C.They want their children to stay indoors.
D.They experience less stress.
3. The underlined part “substitute for” in the last paragraph can be replaced by _______.
A.take the place ofB.be based on
C.be used asD.get through
4. The author's purpose in writing the text is to _______.
A.introduce some outdoor games
B.present a study on outdoor play
C.encourage people to interact more with nature
D.advise parents to let children play outdoors more

5 . How often do you exercise? A new study found that most kids aged 12 to 15 weren't getting enough physical activity. The results were based on about 800 kids. As part of the study, the kids tracked and reported on their own activity levels, and took physical exams.

U. S. fitness guidelines suggest an hour or more of physical activity every day. According to the study, only 1in 4 U.S. kids get enough physical activity.

"It's certainly worrying to see that our kids have such a limited amount of physical activity each day,” said Dr. Stephen Pont. He is an expert on children's health.

Few kids in the study met the guidelines on physical activity that raises the heart rate and makes people breathe harder. Overall, about 25% said they got an hour of that kind of exercise every day. Kids also reported on which activities they did most often outside of school gym class--basketball for boys and running for girls.

The study found that fat teenagers were less active than normal-weight girls and boys. Fat girls were slightly less active than normal-weight girls, but levels were similar among overweight and normal-weight boys. The study also said that the percent of fat children aged 2 to 19 was 17%, or about 12.5 million kids.

"There's always room for improvement," said Tala Fakhouri, who was the leader of the study. She also said the results provide useful information to help with fitness campaigns such as Let's Move, which was initiated by Michelle Obama in 2010. To inspire kids to eat right and get in shape, Michelle visits schools and holds exercise events. She also calls on schools to offer regular gym classes.

The study also found kids who get physical education at school may get better grades.

1. What is the result of the new study?
A.800 kids don't get enough physical activity.
B.Most U.S. kids don't get enough exercise.
C.Kids should get physical activity every day.
D.It's important to take physical exams.
2. Which of the following sports do girls like best?
A.Swimming.B.Basketball.C.Running.D.Gym.
3. What's the purpose of the campaign Let's Move?

C.To offer regular gym classes.D.To hold exercise events.
4. According to the study children with enough exercise may__________.
A.be less active than fat childrenB.be more willing to help others
C.do better in their studiesD.try their best to get in shape

6 . "Tennis is as good for the mind as it is for the body," says Dan Bloxham, head coach at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.     1    .

Family fun

Tennis is the perfect sport for the whole family to enjoy together. When playing with children, use red or orange tennis balls as these are softer than the classic yellow ones used at Wimbledon and will make the game easier and slower to play.

Super social

Instead of going to the pub, why not grab a bat and catch up with friends over a game of tennis? It’s one of the most social sports around and a great way to meet people.     2    , you could turn up at a club anywhere in the world and be able to play even if you don’t speak the language.

    3

Tennis is a huge challenge when it comes to fitness and uses all the muscles in your body as you run across the court, jump to reach high shots and race to the net.

Unlike cycling, which puts emphasis on the muscles in your legs, tennis uses the arms, legs, shoulders, and core, providing a total body workout.     4    . It also improves coordination(协调), strength and cardio fitness.

Digital Detox(脱瘾)

7 . A new urban sport, parkour, is hitting the streets. It has evolved from obstacle course training into a fitness option for young people. In parkour, the outside world is the gym!     1     The goal of parkour is a direct route from one place to another. You meet an obstacle, you overcome it.

Mark Toorock, who teaches the techniques of parkour at his fitness gym, says that parkour is a method to train the body and mind using obstacles as the medium. He says that this new sport is demanding and takes years to master.     2

But Toorock, who used to be a martial arts expert, says that everyone can benefit from learning the basic skills involved in parkour like running, jumping and crawling (爬行). These are the things that humans used to have to do all the time.     3     The original idea of parkour was to return to running and jumping as basic elements in moving from one place to another.

Georges Hebert, a French navy officer, was so impressed by the effortless athleticism of African tribes that he devised a training method based on running, climbing, jumping, balancing and throwing. The word parkour comes from parcours de combatant, the French term for a military obstacle course.     4

Dr Kenneth Kao explains that the sport of parkour is not extreme — it is the environment which is extreme and dangerous. Being outside, jumping off railings and flipping over park benches can be quite frightening, so parkour courses in gyms concentrate on practicing all the individual moves to make everything easier.     5     However, that is not real parkour because it’s indoors with a fixed obstacle. The goal for everyone is to go outdoors.

A.Gyms provide thick floor matting (垫子) for rolling and rubberized boxes for jumping over.
B.The bridges, buildings and railings (栏杆) of each and every city are the equipment.
C.Every action in parkour is natural, so everyone must have the ability to move in this way.
D.Parkour was introduced into china in recent years and has gained popularity.
E.But today, due to modern transport, these basic skills are no longer used on a regular basis.
F.The French word for people who participate in the sport is traceurs or traceuses.
G.Beginners should realize that they won’t be jumping over buildings any time soon!

8 . Ten minutes of gentle exercise can immediately change how certain parts of the brain communicate and coordinate(协调) with one another and improve memory function, according to an encouraging new study.

The scientists invited 36 students to the lab and had them sit quietly on a fixed bicycle for 10 minutes or, on a separate visit, pedal the bicycle at a pace so gentle that it barely raised their heart rates. It also was short, lasting for only 10 minutes. Immediately after each session of the sitting or slow pedaling, the students completed a computerized memory test during which they would see a brief picture of, for instance, a tree, followed by a variety of other images and then a new image of either the same tree or a similar one. The students would press buttons to show whether they thought each image was new or the same as an earlier shot. The test is difficult, since many of the images closely resemble one another. It requires rapid, skilful scanning recent memories to decide whether a picture is new or known. Next, the scientists had each student repeat this process — riding or sitting on the bike for 10 minutes and then completing memory testing — but the testing now took place inside an M.R.I. machine(磁共振成像仪) that scanned the young people’s brains while they responded to the images.

Then the researchers compared results. The effects of the exercise, undemanding as it was, were clear. The young people were better at remembering images after they had ridden the bike, especially when the images most closely resembled one another. In other words, the harder their memories had to strain(尽量使用), the better they performed after the exercise. The M.R.I. scans showed that memory parts of each student’s brain lit up at the same time with parts of the brain associated with learning, indicating that these physically separate parts of the brain were better connected now than when the students had not first exercised.

1. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By filling up questionnaires.
B.By comparing experiment data.
C.By interviewing many students.
D.By referring to historical reports.
2. Who might benefit most from the study?
A.Those unable to have many sports.
B.The marketers promoting fixed bicycles.
C.The young people crazy about body building.
D.The students with heavy schoolwork burdens.
3. Which of the following statements agrees with the study result?
A.The light exercise is only good for young people.
B.The more the exercise is, the better the brain works.
C.The exercise can coordinate different parts of the body.
D.The exercise has more effect while the brain works harder.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Even a bit of exercise can improve memory.
B.Parts of the brain can communicate coordinately.
C.Ridding the bicycle can improve the heart health.
D.The students completed a computerized memory test.

10 . For the first time in 10 years, the United States government has changed its guidance on how much exercise people need to stay healthy and when they should start.

For children and teens

The new guidance states that the most important time for children to begin exercising is between the ages of 3 and 5.     1     That could be light activities, moderate activities, or even vigorous(剧烈的)activities.

Doctors say it is important to start young. They add that from birth to age 5, a child’s brain develops more than at any other time in life.     2     Also, children who start exercising at a young age are more likely to establish healthy behaviors they will continue into adulthood.

But that does not mean putting a small kid on a treadmill(跑步机)or other exercise equipment.     3       After all, it's a kid’s nature to play freely and happily.

4     But it shouldn’t be less than one hour a day three times a week.Their activities should mostly be aerobic(有氧的)exercise, such as biking, swimming or running, which can strengthen the heart and lungs.Such exercise should also include muscle-and-bone-strengthening activities;such as climbing trees or playground equipment and playing sports.

For adults

For adults, the guidelines recommend exercising 150 minutes a week. That could be walking, gardening, dancing, etc.    5     Experts say that even short amounts of aerobic exercise can provide health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, reducing anxiety and improving sleep.

A.Any kind of activity that gets people exercising will do.
B.Aerobic activity works only if it lasts for at least 10 minutes.
C.Simply giving a kid the time and space to play actively is enough.
D.Children above 5 can have a relatively shorter time for daily exercise.
E.Children in this age range require about three hours’ active activities daily.
F.Attaining the health benefits from exercise may be harder than earlier thought.
G.These developments have a 1asting effect on a child’s ability to succeed in life.
