1 . 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Seven years ago, my wife told our 6-year-old daughter about our wedding weekend. My wife had moved back home to spend the weekend with her family.

As I was tucking our daughter in (把女儿的被子掖好) later that night, she asked if she could “come home like mommy did” when she got married one day. (Hopefully, one day far off into the future...) I told her our house would always be open to her. She gave me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek. She was extremely happy.

After a few seconds, I could see her mind churning (思绪翻腾) — the happiness dissipated. She pushed her finger into my belly and told me in low spirits, “Your belly is too big and you are too fat. I don’t know if you are going to make it.”

I was shocked. It was true that my health had fallen into a huge decline in the previous five years as I was building Contegix. I had not thought of it as destroying a future with my family. A 6-year-old girl saw what I missed.

I decided to run a mile the next morning. I couldn’t make it 1/4 mile. I didn’t give up and went out the next morning.

Seven years later, I have lost 60 pounds and regularly run ultra marathons. I attempted my first 100 miles last August, but I missed the terminal point at mile 87 after running on a torn hamstring (腿筋撕裂) for the previous 79 miles.

Yet, the most important distance I will ever go will be walking her down the aisle (结婚) one day. I would not make it if it hadn’t been for the honesty and innocence of a 6-year-old.

1. Why was the author’s daughter happy? (no more than 15 words)
2. What does the underlined word “dissipated” in Paragraph 3 mean? (one word)
3. What happened to the author as he was building Contegix? (no more than 10 words)
4. What does the author regularly do seven years later? (no more than 5 words)
5. What do you think of the author? Please explain. (no more than 25 words)

4 . Forget expensive gym memberships — you don’t need to spend a fortune to exercise. From the best free classes and apps to outdoor gyms, here is how to work out at a minimal(最低的) cost.

In-store exercise classes

In the same way as bookshops double up as coffee shops, activewear shops have learned to multitask as gyms. Outlets from Sweaty Betty(which has branches throughout the UK) to Asics and Nike offer free running clubs: check out their websites to sign up online.     1    , and some classes are heavily in demand.

Run

I gave up the gym five years ago when I faced the fact that my monthly visit was costing me £80. With the first £80 saved I bought some discounted running shoes.     2    .

Good Gym

3    , then Good Gym could supply motivation while doubling the feel good factor. It connects local runners with a range of necessary good deeds from gardening to changing a lightbulb. Some jobs require two runners, others two dozen. The idea is you run to the mission, do the deed, then run back, thereby combining altruism(利他主义), fitness and socializing in one rewarding act.

    4

You might be surprised to discover how many cheap fitness options lie within a short walk of your doorstep. Many local authorities offer fitness initiatives. Mine (Hackney, in east London) organizes £1 exercise classes from family taekwondo(跆拳道) to chair-based yoga.     5    . Check your local council’s website. They are also likely to run tennis courts.

It’s becoming more and more common for people to live to 100 or longer. In fact, researchers say that more than a third of all babies now born in wealthy nations are likely to reach their 100th birthdays, thanks to advanced medical technology and treatment. Here are some of the best strategies for becoming a centenarian.

Eat vegetables and nuts. A study found that those who ate mainly vegetables gained an extra year and a half over meat-eaters; those who ate nuts regularly lived two years longer.

Make friends. Another study found that people with strong social networks were 50 percent less likely to die over a certain period. If you don’t have many friends or relatives in your local community, you can join in the voluntary activities or take part in a hobby group. You will stay happy and healthy through building the connections.

Don’t smoke. This is important: With occasional exceptions, smokers die younger than non-smokers. Even if you have had the habit for decades, quitting will help with your health greatly. It’s important to get your loved ones to stop it, too. People who breathed in secondhand smoke were 26 percent more likely to get heart disease than those who rarely stayed with smokers.

Improve your lifestyle. Along with healthy eating, you should focus on stress management, regular exercise, and building healthy relationships. When you eat more healthily, manage stress, exercise and love more, your brain actually gets more blood flow and more oxygen.

Have a sense of purpose. A study found that the common feature in communities with many people who are 100 or older was that older people still took part in daily life, through tasks such as cooking, cleaning and gardening. They feel the motivation(动机) to stay active, to get out of bed in the morning and live for a purpose.

1. What does the text mainly talk about? (No more than 8 words.)
2. Please explain the underlined word “centenarian” in English? (No more than 8 words.)
3. Why is secondhand smoke harmful to people according to the passage? (15 words.)
4. How can we make friends if we don’t have many friends or relatives nearby in the author’s opinion? (No more than 10 words)
5. If you want to live longer, which of the strategies do you think is the best and why?(No more than 25 words.)

8 . It is not as simple as opening the door and hitting the track in winter. There are a few things you can do to ensure you are getting the most out of your run, and, importantly, not doing more harm than good.

Warm up, cool down

1     Your muscles need some time to warm up when it's cold, so take it easy when you set off and do a few stretches (伸展)once you're finished.

Drink water

You might not feel hot, but that's because sweat evaporates (蒸发)more quickly into the chilly, dry air. So be sure to drink water before, during and after cold-weather workouts.     2     A belt bottle conveniently attaches to your waist so you don't have to carry it and can have a drink whenever you feel like it・

    3

Running in cotton is a bad idea. Wear thin, breathable layers of synthetic (合成 的))clothing that help protect you from the wind and snow, but still let out heat and moisture (水分).Thirty percent of your body heat escapes through your hands and forty percent through your head. Wear a hat, or beanie (无边小便帽), and gloves so your circulatory system can distribute warm blood to the rest of your body.     4

Run into the wind

5     . Obviously, it will be an easier passage home with some extra help from Mother Nature. But, more importantly, you won't have the wind in your face for the second half of your run, when you are more likely to be sweating and catch a chill.

A.Dress right
B.Keep warm.
C.Don't go too fast, too soon
D.Start and finish in the same way.
E.Don't wait to drink water until you feel thirsty.
F.Head out into the wind and come home with it at your back
G.On really cold days, wear a mask or scarf over your mouth to protect your face.

9 . For generations, students were taught to stretch before playing games. Then the practice fell out of favor. Studies seemed to show that such stretching temporarily reduces muscular power, weakens athletic performance and increases the risk of injury. So most fitness experts currently advise against stretches before exercise. But now a new research indicates that they might not be such a bad idea after all.

This month, the journal, Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism (APNM), published a study by four distinguished exercise scientists who analyzed more than 200 studies of how stretching affects the following exercise. In broad terms, they found that stretching can briefly prevent the ability to generate power. So if you reach for your toes and hold that position, tightening your hamstrings (腿筋), you might not then be able to leap as high or start a dash as forcefully as you don’t stretch.

Those undesirable effects were generally found, however, only if each stretch was held for more than 60 seconds and the subject then immediately became fully active, with no further warm-up. “Outside the lab, most people are unlikely to hold a warm-up stretch for longer than about 30 seconds.” Dr. McHugh, the co-author of the study says. The review found few lasting negative impacts from these short stretches, especially if the volunteers followed that stretching with several minutes of jogging or other basic warm-up movements. In fact, these short stretches turned out to have a positive effect.

Do these findings mean that all the athletes should stretch in advance before a match? “Not necessarily,” Dr. McHugh says, “Runners and cyclists don’t have much risk for acute muscle injuries.” Stretching before these activities is unlikely to protect against injury. Runners and cyclists can adequately warm up by jogging or pedaling lightly. But he suggests that people who play basketball and other ball sports should stretch in advance. Those who haven’t stretched since childhood gym class might want to consider consulting an athletic trainer about the best upper and lower body stretches, particularly for the shoulders and hamstrings.

1. According to the new research, people may suffer negative impacts when _______.
A.they do stretches after attending a game
B.they reach for toes and hold that position
C.following a stretch with several minutes’ jogging
D.dashing immediately after one 60-second plus stretch
2. We can learn from the passage that _______.
A.all athletes should not stretch in advance
B.the four scientists published the journal APNM
C.it’s unnecessary for a tennis player to do warm-up stretches
D.players ought to have done warm-up stretches since childhood
3. What’s Dr. McHugh’s attitude toward stretches?
A.Concerned.B.Doubtful.
C.Disapproving.D.Objective.

10 . Don’t you just love ice skating every winter? I am sure that since winter is approaching, your skates are set to come out, just waiting to be used. Impress your friends with your new trick on how to ice-skate backwards with the help of these tips.

Stand straight

The first thing that you need to do is, stand straight.     1     , if you feel that you are falling backwards. Don’t worry; this happens to all.

Confidence is what you need

The most important step while learning how to skate backwards, is having enough confidence in yourself and in what you are doing. How can you achieve this? By practice. One of the important ice skating tips and techniques is that if you feel that you are losing your balance, then scissor(做剪式运动)your skates.     2     .

Maintain speed

Try sculling(滑)with one skate while rolling in a straight line with the other.    3     . Now bring the skate which you are using to scull, and then again, repeat the same process. Make sure that you put most of your weight on the skate which is moving straight and not the one with which you are sculling.

Now, try the same thing using the other foot.

    4     .

Once you are confident that you can scull with either foot, the next thing that you have to do is increase your speed. Try some of your own tricks now. Scull with either foot or with both at the same time.

Scull and be aware

While you keep one foot straight, keep sculling with the other. You can do that with both feet at the same time.     5     , but don’t get so involved that you don’t see where you are going. If you are not watching your back, you might just bang against something or someone.

A.That is, keep pushing yourself backwards with an outwards stroke(滑动)
B.While going backwards, just get used to the feeling of moving backwards
C.Keep practicing this till you are confident about it
D.Increase your speed now
E.One must be brave enough to learn to ice-skate backwards
