1 . Many people run for exercise. But what if you are not a “born” runner or jogger? You may still want a kind of exercise that’s inexpensive and easy to do. Why not try walking?

Walking is something that almost any normal, healthy person can do. It requires no special equipment. Walking can give you many of the same benefits as jogging or running; it will just take longer. Jogging and running make your heart and lungs work harder than walking. They also put more stress on your legs and feet than walking does.

If you’re going to get your exercise by walking, you need to have your own walking program. After all, runners and joggers set goals for themselves. Walkers need goals, too.

Set a definite course to walk. Start by walking about 15 — 30 minutes a day. Build up your time and distance slowly. Try increasing your walking speed little by little.

If you prefer to jog or run, follow the same advice. Start off slowly. Spend most of the first few days just walking. Then, start walking and running on the same day. Run or jog a short distance, then walk for a while, then run, then walk. Follow that pattern for 15 — 30 minutes a day. Slowly make each run longer and each walk shorter. Later on, you can increase your distance, speed, and exercise time.

So the Hegseths volunteered to participate in this year’s Family Fitness Challenge. The ongoing project is being produced in partnership with USA Weekend and “The Doctors” TV show.

More than 400 families applied to take part in the challenge. Six families were chosen, and they were paired with a fitness expert from the American College of Sports Medicine and a registered dietitian from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The families have been working with their professionals since early January.

The Hegseths are now walking a couple miles at the local high school. “Sam and I go every Friday. We talk about his week at school. It’s a bonding time,” she said.

According to a new study published in the Journal of Cognition, walking backwards, whether doing it really or just imagining it can improve the brainpower in the short term. In the study, 114 volunteers were asked to watch a video in which a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the information shown in the video. Ten minutes after watching the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. The first two groups were told to move forwards or backwards 10 meters while the third group was asked to stay still on the same point. The researchers found that the backwards walking group got two more correct answers on average than the other two groups. This suggests that a relationship between the concepts of time and space is important to the way our minds form memories,

When we walk backwards, everything we learn becomes strange to us. “This forces the brain to think in a different way,” US scientist Christine Weber told Forbes. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active in the limited time. Naturally, our short-term memory will be improved greatly.

Besides improving our memory, walking backwards also plays an important role in physical health, especially fitness. Another study found that walking backwards puts less strain (压力) and requires a smaller range of movements from the knee joints (膝关节). Thus, there’s less pressure and pain in the knees.

In addition, walking backwards, compared to walking forwards, is more challenging. It requires you to use muscles and movements that you probably seldom use, making it a prefect way to change your exercise routine for greater fitness gains. Meanwhile, by making people put in extra effort, it naturally bums more fat and calories.

Like many outdoor activities, pickleball is social, but it is easier to learn than tennis and faster and less expensive than golf. Country clubs and recreation centers across the country are changing some of their tennis courts into pickleball courts to meet demand. The more places there are to play, the more players will try the sport.

“Pickleball was seen as a threat in the tennis community,” says Stu Upson of USA Pickleball, the sport’s national governing body, who used to work for the International Tennis Hall of Fame. But now, he insists, it is viewed as an opportunity. Tennis pros are adding pickleball lessons to their list. As more people take up the sport, demand for televised matches and sponsorships will increase. “It’s reasonable that pickleball could become an Olympic sport. But to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee, we need at least 70 countries with pickleball federations (联合会), so it’s not going to be in the next four or eight years,” says Mr. Upson.

Muscles are made of thousands of stringy fibers-a number that is fixed during childhood-which contract(收缩)when doing work. Strength does not depend on the number of fibers but on the function of their thickness and how many of them contract at the same time.

Exercise actually damages the muscles. During the recovery stage, the muscle fibers increase in size. Exercise also trains more muscle fibers to work at one time. If a muscle is weak or untrained, for example, only 10 percent of its fibers will contract, whereas up to 90 percent of the fibers in a weight lifter's biceps(二头肌)will contract.

Aside from the strength, two other factors go into making an athlete: fitness and endurance. Fitness is related to the condition of the heart. During exercises, there is an increase in the amount of blood returning to the heart from the muscles. A typical volume for a runner at rest is about 5 quarts a minute, compared with 30 quarts during a vigorous trial(运动测试). This greater volume means more work for the heart-a muscular balloon that expands and contract is to take in blood and push it out. Like any other muscle, the heart enlarges and gets stronger with routine exercise.

Endurance, or the length of time muscles can work, depends in part on how much fuel-in this case sugar-the muscles can store. A muscle that is continually exercised until it runs out of sugar tends to store more when it refuels at the next meal. And more sugar can translate into greater endurance the next time the muscle is put to the test.
