1 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文

I entered my freshman year of high school with a philosophy: work hard and do whatever 1 could succeed at. I thought I would make some impressive achievements in this way. I wouldn’t waste my time on areas I was not good at.

And this philosophy served me well. I worked hard on my lessons and piano practice, which I had talent for, and got the results I wanted. usually in the shape of good grades and rewards. My friends laughed about my all-or-nothing attitude, but I thought it was the only sure path to success.

At the beginning of the second year of high school. I fully intended to keep the same attitude. Then I joined the school cross-country running team. a year after I had watched cross-country races. I joined mainly because my brother was on the team; he was entering his senior year, and I wanted to spend more time with him before he left for college. Also, many of my friends were on the team. and they had been trying to persuade me to join them for months.

When I came to the first practice. I was filled with optimism and dreamed of being an excellent runner. But as the distance we ran each practice gradually increased. I realized however hard I tried. I was the slowest on the team. And the muscle injury was often intolerable. What was the point of putting me through so much pain? I’d never be an excellent runner. For the first few weeks. I had been thinking of giving up.

Then we had our first cross-country meet. When we got off the bus at Lamoille High School. dressed in our blue uniforms with our team name shown on the shirts. the sight of the other teams warming up made me anxious. I thought I would let my team down. And I guessed my coach and teammates would be disappointed at my performance and blame me. This thought made me decide to quit the cross-country running team after the race.

Now. looking at the tough course made up of a series of short. steep(陡峭的)hills. I stood silently with my teammates.

I’m not exactly the biggest guy on my basketball team. I’m not even in the top half of the team in height. Okay, the truth is that I’m not only the smallest player on my team, but also the smallest in the league(联赛). However, there is one reason why I made the team. Although my arms and legs are short and my body is small, I know that I can match anyone out there in the size of my heart.

One time, I was trying to get the ball from a huge player from the other team. Since I was the smallest player, I had to try my best. I guess that was quite a funny sight because when I got back to the bench, the coach said I looked like an angry Chihuahua, which refers to a small Mexican dog. I didn’t like it. I pretended(假装) to laugh, but inside I was hurt. One player who didn’t laugh was Eric. He always went out of his way to make me feel at home on the team. Except Eric, I felt like all the members of the team thought I was a joke!

However, something happened a few days later, and now, I wear this name with pride. That day, we were playing against another team. They were all huge, and they played very hard and madly. One of their players was the biggest bully(恶霸) in the league. I knew that one big hit from this guy could leave me seriously injured.

In the middle of the game, I passed the ball to Eric. He was about to take a shot(投篮) when the big bully on the other team took his ball and knocked Eric on the shoulder. Eric dropped like a stone on the ground and was badly injured.

I had just a very wonderful day. Although all my days were always wonderful to me, that day was completely different. There was a bulletin(公告)board saying that they would need to find volleyball players for the girls and I was so happy! I have been loving playing volleyball since my mother taught me how to play. I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to play! Then I read more what was on that bulletin board, which said that here would be an audition(试演)after three weeks! “Three weeks?” I thought about it I did know how to play volleyball but I was not much of an expert in doing it but I still wanted to try.

After that I was determined to practice volleyball every day. I practiced hard again and again each day and never got tired of doing the same practice through all the days, and finally, the day came. I was so prepared for this and hurried to the gym to the audition. When I had reached the gym, I was surprised to see that 12 or 14 girls were lining up and I guessed I was the last one to arrive. Then our audition began. Some of the girls failed to pass the audition and some passed.

There was only one position left to complete the 6 girls to join the volleyball team and suddenly I felt nervous because the person in front of me was going to take the serve(发球). Then the girl hit the ball and then the ball didn’t pass over the net! The girl hit her forehead and left, leaving me standing in the middle of the court.

Then the coach spoke, “Okay, you serve.” She handed me the ball and I caught it with my hands. As the ball was in my hands, my hands were suddenly sweating and so was I!

Stephen pushed his foot down hard on the gas pedal as he was on the racetrack. The roar of the engine was loud. Stephen loved the sound. At the speed he was going, audiences flashed by as fast as thoughts. “Nothing beats racing.” Stephen said to himself.

Stephen hadn’t come from a “racing family”, and he couldn’t afford a good racing car. But with the help of his uncle, who worked as a mechanic at the local repair shop, Stephen’s car was fast enough to compete.

Not far ahead was the race’s leader, Jack, whose car was so well equipped and stayed just out of Stephen’s reach. Both boys wanted to win. No other cars were close to the two leaders.

Stephen pressed harder on the gas, but his car was already at top speed. Jack’s car pulled away. Stephen had no choice but to fall behind him as they slowed to go into the next turn.

Stephen concentrated as he made a long right-hand turn, then accelerated onto the straightaway (直道) His foot pressed hard against the Pedal. Still, the engine on Jack’s car was too powerful, and Jack pulled away. Stephen wasn’t going to be satisfied with second place today. The winner would get tickets to the professional championship race-presented by two-time champion Mike Gordon.

On the last turn, Stephen drew directly behind Jack. He pulled beside Jack’s car. Their engine screamed. Then, as it had so many times before, Jack’s car pulled ahead.

The finish line was approaching them, closer, closer... The race was over. Stephen came in second. As he climbed out of the car, his vision blurred with tears. He remembered what other drivers had sometimes said, “Second place is just first loser.”

“Great work, kid!” said a man’s voice.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Last fall, I came up with a good idea to tell my friend Melanie that she and I should enter a backcountry ski mountaineering race. The mountain is 40 miles from Crested Butte to Aspen, Colorado, and it required us to race as a team. Neither of us had ever done a ski race, but we’d always been good partners on mountain bikes, so I thought we’d be well-matched in the ski race, too.

However, on our first long training day together, Melanie dropped me again and again. As she disappeared out of sight on our last climb, I complained to myself, “Why had I come up with this stupid idea? Why wasn’t she waiting?” When I finally caught up, Melanie asked, “Are you OK?” I opened my mouth to respond and — oh, no — tears (眼泪) began running down my face. I felt sad and embarrassed. Crying was a behavior I connected with myself as a beginner who did most often in the years when I was learning to mountain bike. Seeing this, Melanie said with motherly concern, “I think you peed to have a rest and eat something.”

She was right. Rest and sugar improved my mood. Finally, we began going down the mountain together and we joked about my tears. In the days that followed, we kept training hard for the race day.

Despite the difficult start to our training, on race day, Melanie and I proved to be a good pair. The race began at midnight, and for six hours we schussed (直线滑降) together as a team through the darkness. But as the sun began to rise, we found ourselves pushing as hard as we could to make it to Star Pass, the high point of the race, by the important 7 am. Unluckily, we lost the race because we were 2 minutes late.

Sweat poured down Marquez’s face. He was preparing for a basketball game and he would win. That was a pretty sure thing. After all, he wasn’t just good; he was excellent.

Basketball was a way of life in Marquez’s family. His older brother Reggie was now playing at a top college. Marquez was ready to follow in his brother’s footsteps and make his family proud. But he had a secret. As good as he was at basketball, Marquez’s heart wasn’t in it anymore. He had another sport on his mind.

Wiping the sweat from his forehead (额头), Marquez jumped on a bus heading home. Through the bus window, he could see cheerleaders dancing and performing amazingly on the field. Marquez was attracted. He pulled out a sheet from his bookbag. Across the top in big block letters was the phrase: Cheerleading Competition (啦啦队比赛). That’s what Marquez really wanted to do. He longed for a new challenge.

Although it is accepted that cheerleading was girly, Marquez knew the meaning of cheerleading for a game. He also knew that cheerleading wouldn’t just be a physical challenge; it would be an emotional one, too.

Now, he knew it was time for him to tell his family.

As soon as he arrived home, his parents and Reggie were at the door. Marquez’s face grew bright as he hugged Reggie. “You’re home?” “Of course, little man. I planned to come to your game. You’re going to be a better player than me!”

Everyone in the family was smiling…except Marquez. His family had such high expectations for him when it came to basketball. But Marquez was tired of trying to keep up with his brother. He was ready to carve his own path. He wanted to tell his parents, but Reggie being there put much more pressure on him.

It was the last practice before the big gymnastics competition in Burlingville. The gymnastics team of Springtown High School had been training every day in the school vacation. They tried harder and wanted to do better. They had competed with the team from Maidstone High School several times. The competitions allowed the two teams to admire each other for their excellent performance and players’ qualities. They respected the game; they respected each other’s team more.

Today, the players of Springtown went home earlier. They would pack some food and water to have along the way to Burlingville. Before they went home, they went to their teacher to see their new uniform. Springton High School was in the countryside. The team made cookies and sold them at the market to get money to buy the uniform. They loved it very much, even though they were impressed with the uniforms of the team from Maidstone. Maidstone High School was a rich private school. It usually prepared two sets of uniforms for the competition — one for the morning and the other for the afternoon.

Early the next morning, the team of Springtown High School and their teacher got on a minibus to start their long trip. They would reach the railway station in Travers at about two o’clock and then take a train to Burlingville. They must be there by six o’clock and register for the competition.

The bus driver drove the bus through the country roads. Then suddenly, he parked the bus at the side of the road. There was something wrong with the engine. Unluckily, the driver couldn’t fix it in a short time. He called the company and asked them to send another bus for the gymnastics team. It was 90 minutes before another minibus came. Everyone jumped onto the bus. “Please hurry,” said the teacher.

When they finally arrived at Travers railway station, the bus driver helped the team carry the bags into the station. As soon as they got on the train, it started to move. Looking out of the window, the teacher saw the bus driver running towards the train door.

Emma was very excited Today was the championship baseball game! The winners would all get trophies(奖杯) and be the number one players in the town. Emma decided to bring home a trophy to put on her shelf. She had never won a trophy before.

She put on her red uniform and pulled her hair through the back of her baseball cap. She picked up her gloves and looked in the mirror. “I hope I get a hit today,” she said to herself.

On the way to the field, Emma felt nervous.

“Are you feeling OK, Emma?” her mother asked.

“I really don’t want to strike out(三击不中出局),” Emma said.

“Just keep your eye on the ball and don’t feel afraid. You can do it,” Emma’s mother said.

Emma was a great hitter in practice, but she had never hit a ball during a game. She always struck out.

When the game started, Emma cheered loudly for her friends. She caught a fly ball in the Outfield, and everyone cheered for her. Emma struck out when it was her turn to hit the ball, but her team was doing well.

The game was tied(平局), and it was her team’s last chance to score. 10 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成 一篇完整的短文。

I yawned (打哈欠)as I got off the last step of the bus. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride from Riverside High, thinking about that day’s race, the Eye Opener. I had never raced in a state-wide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.

“Start warming up,” our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.

The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two commands,” his voice boomed, ‘‘Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again. ” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.

“Runners set!” the starter shouted Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline (肾上腺素)rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.

“6’10”, a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to burn as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.
