2 . Ramen noodles have been a go-to food for students for decades. After all, they only take eight minutes to cook in a dorm hotpot and are easy on the budget. Holly Grounds, a recent project design graduate who used to eat a lot of ramen noodles when she studied, started thinking that the packaging of a product shouldn't take decades or more to break down. That's why she decided to make eatable wrappers (包装材料) for noodles, avoiding the need for plastic.

Grounds wanted to produce a product that the user could watch actually melt in the pot. “While other bio-based alternatives to plastic claim to be able to break down, in a consumer’s eyes, it's not always that simple,”she said. “Many of the bio-based films only break down at 50 degrees Celsius, so they often end up in the wrong place without the consumer really knowing that they caused damage to the planet.”

Now, instead of plastic packs of seasonings, the dried spices and flavorings (调味品)are part of a flavorless bioplastic film that wraps the noodles and keeps them fresh. The film melts in less than a minute when it comes into boiling water, and the liquid becomes the sauce (调味汁)for the noodles.

“The sauce is heated until the mixture is thick enough. At this point, I add the spices and flavorings before pouring it into a mold (模子)to set for 24 hours,” Grounds said. These noodle parcels are then packaged in a wax-coated paper.

With plastics taking hundreds of years to break down, eatable packaging and single-use articles are seen as the way to go. Grounds sees opportunities to use her eatable packaging for other ready meals and she wants to contribute to the global fight against single-use plastics.

1. Why does Grounds want to replace plastic wrappers with eatable ones?
A.The plastic ones are not eco-friendly.
B.The plastic ones do harm to our health.
C.The eatable ones appeal to more consumers.
D.The eatable ones save more cooking time.
2. What makes the bio-based films fail to break down in practice?
A.The immature technology.
B.The high cost of process.
C.Their very special material composition.
D.Their specific conditions of breaking down.
3. What do we know about the eatable wrapper according to Paragraph 3?
A.It ensures longer preservation time.
B.It requires a special cooking method.
C.It ends up as the sauce for food.
D.It improves the nutrition of noodles.
4. The fourth paragraph mainly talks about the                      the eatable noodle wrappers.
A.the method of usingB.the process of making
C.the packaging design forD.the storage requirements for

3 . Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers (零售商) are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting green shopper.

But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline investigated (调查) this question and concluded that it's not as sustainable as it seems.

Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented — receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing.

She writes, ''An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way, and increases up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By comparison, the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from a physical store and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi's.''

Then there's the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it's returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and polluting process. All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene (氯乙烯), a carcinogenic (致癌的) air pollutant, still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with alternatives, although these aren't great either.

Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it's so easily accessible. There's something called ''share washing'' that makes people waste more precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, advertised as ''a way to share rides and limit ear ownership.'' and yet ''it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation use.''

Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldn't let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. There's an even better step — that's wearing what is already in the closet.

1. What is Elizabeth Cline's attitude toward clothing rental?
A.Approving.B.Unfavorable.
C.Objective.D.Enthusiastic.
2. The Uber example in Paragraph 6 indicates that      .
A.rental services are on the rise
B.clothing rental will be as successful as Uber
C.renting clothes might waste more than expected
D.renting clothes might make people lose interest in fast fashion
3. The author suggests that we should      .
A.give up renting any clothing
B.purchase inexpensive clothes
C.rent clothes rather than buy them
D.make full use of clothes we've possessed
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.Clothing rental is a new fashion.
B.Clothing rental is retailers' preference.
C.Renting clothes is not that eco-friendly.
D.Renting-clothes business is in a dilemma.

6 . Something’s happening at the lowest point on our planet, some 1,388 feet below sea level. The Dead Sea, a salt lake close to Israel, Jordan and the West Bank, is shrinking at an alarming rate—about 3.3 feet per year, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East.

“It’s not just like one country is punishing the Dead Sea; it’s more like the whole region,” said photographer Moritz Küstner, who visited the area in February to work on his series “The Dying Dead Sea”.

The Dead Sea needs water from the other natural sources surrounding it, such as the Jordan River basin. But around the 1960s, the courses of some water sources it relied upon were diverted. Israel, for instance, built a pipeline during that time so it could supply water throughout the country.

Mineral extraction(提取) industries are another main reason why the water levels are declining, experts say. The Dead Sea’s minerals have been popular for their medical power and can often be found in cosmetics(化妆品) and other consumer products.

And then, of course, there’s the Middle East’s hot, dry climate, which makes it difficult for the lake to refill itself. Last year, Israel and Jordan signed a $900 million deal in an effort to stabilize the Dead Sea’s water levels. It involves building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea which would be able to not only supply water to Israel and Jordan but also to pump much needed water—some 300 million cubic meters annually—into the Dead Sea.

“This is the most important and significant agreement since the peace treaty with Jordan (in 1994),” said Silvan Shalom, Israel’s energy and water resources minister at the time. Whether the canal—estimated to take three years to complete—will work out positively and as planned remains to be seen.

For now, Küstner shows us that the Dead Sea remains very much a place of interest, with people from all over the world going there to swim in its salty waters.

1. How many reasons for the Dead Sea’s shrinking does the author mention in the passage?
A.One.B.Two.
C.Three.D.Four.
2. What does the underlined word “diverted” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Switch.B.Improve.
C.Accomplish.D.Repair.
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The Dead Sea is drying out causing water shortage to humans.
B.Küstner visited the Dead Sea to shoot TV series about people’s life.
C.The Dead Sea’s minerals have been used in some products.
D.The Dead Sea’s water levels have been stabilized by building a canal.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.How the Dead Sea’s water levels’ decline influences human beings.
B.How important the Dead Sea is in Israel,Jordan and the West Bank.
C.What we should do to save the Dead Sea from being destroyed.
D.Why the Dead Sea is dying and the measure taken to save it.

7 . Imagine possessing something that you loved so much. Imagine what it would feel like if you lost it. While that item may be something as simple as a doll, you would still feel very upset, but you could replace it with a new one. Now imagine losing something that you depend on for survival and cannot be replaced. That is what it would be like if we lost the natural environment around us.

Firstly, I believe the environment should be preserved because it supports human life. One of the largest examples is that we get all of our food and drinks in the environment. If the environment were to be destroyed beyond revival, then the human race would be over in months. Scientists have yet to find another planet with similar conditions to the Earth, and if it’s found, we don’t have the technology to get to that planet on time.

Secondly, I believe that the environment serves as an amazing educational tool for students. When I was in second grade, I had an absolute interest in animals. When we had a field trip to the Daggerwing Nature Center, I was very excited. When we got there, I could hardly believe what I was seeing. There was a bridge to get to the main building, and under the bridge was a small swamp(沼泽) with turtles, fish, and my personal favorite, alligators. I was so surprised that I almost ran into the tour guide. We walked into the building and saw various animals in their habitats. I was so inspired by this visit. Six years later, I have taken an animal behavior class for three weeks. Meeting by chance with the environment can inspire people, and if preserved it will continue to inspire people.

In conclusion, the environment is so valuable because it can’t be replaced, keeps us alive, and serves as a great educational tool.

1. The first paragraph leads to the theme of the text by______.
A.analyzing causesB.presenting differences

2. What does the underlined word "revival" in the paragraph 2 mean?
A.Health.B.Activity.
C.Recovery.D.Revision.
3. Why did the author take a class on animal behavior?
A.Because he thought it a promising subject.
B.Because he wanted to be an animal expert.
C.Because his teacher encouraged him to do so.
D.Because he was inspired by animals he once saw.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Which Planet Can Replace the Earth
B.Why the Environment Is So Important
C.What People Can Do to Stop Pollution
D.How People Should Protect the Environment

8 . Are you facing a situation that looks impossible to fix?

In 1969,the pollution was terrible along the Cuyahoga River Cleveland, Ohio. It    1    (be) unimaginable that it could ever be cleaned up. The river was so polluted that it    2    (actual) caught fire and burned. Now, years later, this river is one of    3    most outstanding(杰出的)examples of environmental cleanup.

But the river wasn’t changed in a few days    4    even a few months. It took years of work     5    (reduce) the industrial pollution and clean the water. Finally, that hard work paid off and now the water in the river is    6    (clean) than ever.

Maybe you are facing an impossible situation. Maybe you have a habit    7    is driving your family crazy. Possibly you drink too much or don’t know how to control your credit card use. When you face such an impossible situation, don’t you want a quick fix and something to change immediately?

While there are    8    (amaze) stories of instant transformation, for most of us the    9    (change) are gradual and require a lot of effort and work, like cleaning up a polluted river. Just be     10    (patience).
