文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章讲述了农民Pak Sadiman多年来通过种树将原本缺水的村庄变成了一个地下水的避风港,不仅解决该村庄的干旱问题,还造福了后代。

1 . Farmer Pak Sadiman has made it his task to raise awareness and do something about Central Java’s water shortage problem, little by little.

He has changed his dry village into a groundwater haven by planting trees on nearby land for the last 19 years, and he’s encouraging others to join in, too.

Sadiman realised that the land was in need of some water when the Gendol River—previously the source of water for villagers—was quickly drying up. Even rubber trees, the local people’s main source of income, were so dry that they could no longer produce rubber latex. It was then that Sadiman took action so that generations to come could benefit from the planted trees.

“Banyan trees, unlike rubber trees, can keep groundwater. The more banyan trees are planted, the more clean water villagers will get,” he thought. Although he would often find his seeds dug up by cattle, the farmer never became discouraged from achieving his goal—providing his village with a clean water source.

He’s planted at least 11,000 trees over the last 19 years, and his village seems to have escaped from the dry season. Villagers have joined in Sadiman’s efforts and given him free seeds or worked alongside him to plant the trees. “Pak Sadiman is our hero. This village used to fight with water shortage, but now we have enough water because of him,” the local chief said.

Sadiman said as long as he’s physically healthy and fit, he’ll continue to plant trees and finish his vision of avoiding drought and help provide clean water for his fellow villagers.

2 . A few weeks ago, I bought a locally-grown salad from a vending machine(自动售货机). But then I immediately realized that it was packaged in a plastic jar. ''I guess I live with this jar now and forever. '' I thought sadly as I stared down at my new child.

The salad jar was only the latest in a long line of examples of how I am addicted to the responsibility of reusing everything, trying to never throw anything away. Water bottles have been given second lives, and berry containers are transformed into Tupperware. I recently even looked at a plastic straw in my fruit juice: Could I reuse it too…?

Yet trying to squeeze my salad jar under my kitchen counter this weekend, I finally had to admit: Being an environmentalist has turned me into a hoarder(囤积者). While keeping a certain number of jars and vegetable bags will allow me not to buy new containers, at a certain point those 30 berry containers begin to get a bit unnecessary. Who am I kidding? Then one day I came across a blog post that asks accusingly. ''Are you turning your own home into a landfill(垃圾填埋场)? ''

In my defense, there is absolutely no excuse not to be a conscious consumer. The solution is painfully obvious, but hard to admit: Delaying waste is not, in fact, rejecting waste. In an over-packaged, over-consuming culture, this can feel like a burden. While I refuse to throw away packaging, the fact remains: I already have it. The damage is done. I've been ignoring one of the most essential and difficult parts—reduce, reuse, recycle. Even if I go out of my way to reuse the waste I do have, I need to reduce what I am bringing home in the first place.

While I might not be ready to go full zero-waste, it's a goal that is admirable to work toward. Until then, my salad jar child is going to make a great overnight oats jar.

1. What does the author try to indicate by the last sentence in paragraph 2 ?
A.How important reusing is.
B.How enthusiastic she is about reusing.
C.How she makes use of the plastic straw.
D.Why she is responsible for reusing plastic straws.
2. Why does the author say she has turned into a hoarder?
A.She enjoys collecting a variety of small jars.
B.She has saved far more containers than she needs.
C.She likes the idea of saving fine packages in daily life.
D.She stores more berry containers than other containers.
3. What does the underlined word ''this'' in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Over-packaging.B.Delaying waste.
C.Over-consuming.D.Rejecting waste.
4. The author realizes at last that she should___________.
A.buy fewer over-packaged goods
B.throw away unnecessary packaging
C.reuse materials as much as possible
D.appreciate the value of recycling materials

3 . UK Phone Booths Become Free Solar-powered Mobile Phone Changers

Created in the 1920s by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect who designed Waterloo Bridge, the red public telephone boxes, which can be seen all over the UK, are regarded as one of the most typical symbols of this country.

However, public phones have had their day despite their lovely housings. While coin-operated and card-operated telephones are on the edge of extinction, mobile phones are playing a significant role in people’s lives. Though they are more portable, flexible and extensively used, mobile phones have their kryptonite: battery life. Instead of trashing the phone booths, a project was then promoted to recycle and reuse them. To be consistent with the environment-friendly preference, people are allowed to rent and repurpose the red phone boxes. In this way, they are making an unusual comeback.

When you take a walk down Tottenham Court Road in London and find your mobile phone in a low-battery condition, there happens to be a green option for you. The abandoned phone booths are being repurposed as free charging stations powered by solar energy.

Inside the booths, which are newly painted green, there are various adapters that can be connected to different brands and models of mobile phones. Just walk in, plug your phone in, and charge it up whenever it needs to be supplied with power. Since most people would stay inside the boxes while they charge, Solarbox, the company which launched the project, can reach a large quantity of audience by displaying ads on solid equipment. Its advertisers include well-known companies like Uber, yet 30% of advertising space is reserved for local community projects.

Apart from converting phone booths into solar-powered charging stations, other forms of transformation can be found in and outside the UK. For example, there is medical equipment or mini libraries adapted from phone booths, while in America, thousands of phone booths have been transformed to Wi-Fi hot spots.

2. What’s the fundamental factor that makes Solarbox launch the project?
A.The new function.
B.Advertising profit.
C.People’s affection.
D.Companies’ support.
3. How does author think of phone boxes used as charging station?
A.Conventional.B.Consistent.C.Costly.D.Convenient.
4. What’s the text mainly about?
A.The future of the public phones.
B.The revival of the phone boxes.
C.The rise and fall of the red boxes.
D.The ups and downs of the pay phone.

4 . A society that lives by the plastic fork may very well die from it. That's how things are looking. Anyway, for a world so used to disposable(一次性的) habits, any hope for a solution(解决方案) also increasingly seems to be buried.

Sure, there have been some hopeful ideas.   Boyan Slat, the Dutch inventor developed a plan for Covering the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Not long after it started, Slat's system experienced "material fatigue(疲劳)"-likely the result of being strained(使受到压力) by all that trash-and the task was delayed.

AlI the while, the plastic increases. Its growth is very fast, according to Linda Wang, a professor of chemical engineering at Purdue University. She says, "We'II have more plastic than fish by 2050. " Yet Wang, along with other researchers at Purdue, may have a solution not only to this plastic problem, but also to the growing need for clean energy.   Her team has developed a system that turns waste, a durable, lightweight material that accounts for about a quarter of all plastic waste, into a highly pure form of gasoline.

Publishing their findings in the journal Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering, the scientists state that instead of making plastic go away, they can break it down and reuse it, using chemistry to destroy what chemistry brought to the world when plastic was developed back in 1907.

The process uses "supercritical" water-heated to around 450 degrees celsius(842 degrees Fahrenheit),beyond the key point at which distinct liquid and vapor phases(气液态) exist-to boil plastic waste into an oil,the researchers explain. It takes a couple of hours for the supercritical water to complete the transformation, but the result is a kind of oil that can be used as gasoline or fuel. It can also be turned into other products.

The researchers have only made the transformation in a laboratory setting so far, but they suggest turning the process to a commercial scale(规模) may not be far off. And considering the 300 million tons of plastic into the environment every year, that day can't come soon enough. But it will come in time.

1. Why is the plastic fork mentioned in paragraph l?
A.To indicate the hopeless future of human life.
B.To figure out the solution to reducing plastics.
C.To show the seriousness of the plastic problem.
D.To tell people to give up an unhealthy lifestyle.
2. What can we know about Slat's system?
A.It proves harmful to the Pacific.
B.It has been abandoned completely.
C.It has received many people's opposition.
D.It met with difficulty while being carried out.
3. What is the advantage of Wang's system?
A.It can save fish in the ocean.
B.It can recycle and reuse plastic.
C.It can surely lower the prices of gas and fuel.
D.It can make plastic products more affordable.
4. What is the author's attitude towards Wang's system?
A.Hopeful.B.Disapproving.
C.Cautious.D.Uncertain.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要说明了为了保护环境,恢复生态系统,中国新颁布了一项环境保护指导方针。

6 . To make sure of greener development, China will combine efforts in environmental protection and ecological restoration according to the country’s newly approved guideline for environmental protection, part of the 13th FiveYear Plan (2016—2020).

China surpassed its goal in environmental protection for the 12th FiveYear Plan (2011—2015), with carbon intensity dropping by 20 percent (the intended target is 17 percent). It is a major contribution to worldwide efforts against climate change, officials said.

The new guideline stresses efforts to restore nature while reducing industrial damage to the environment. The goal is to achieve a more environmentally friendly way of living, considerable reduction in major pollutant emissions and a sounder ecological system by 2020. A good environment is a necessary part in improving people’s living standards, officials said.

Statistics of a report from several Chinese universities show that more than one third of the country’s industrial waste water flows directly into rivers and lakes. Water pollution within China has affected the environment, society and agriculture. It has resulted in huge economic losses. Air pollution is also one of the major problems in China. Heavy haze usually covers North and East China. Environmental issues are becoming a barrier to China’s development. Besides, heavy metal pollution in soil in China is so serious that it requires us to act immediately. 10 percent of the total farmland of China has heavymetalpolluted soil. The heavy metal in soil will enter into humans’ food chain through grain and agricultural products.

The rapid industrialization of agriculture, expansion of the chemical industry, and the need to produce cheap forms of energy have caused the continuous release of manmade organic chemicals into natural ecosystems. The guideline focuses on ecological restoration by controlling more types of pollutants than before.

7 . How can having a childlike view of the world help the environment? Danish eco-artist Thomas Dambo combines a talent for recycling with a fairy-tale imagination to bring people worldwide closer to nature.

For the “Guardians of the Seeds” exhibition, Danish eco-artist Thomas Dambo built five trolls from discarded wood materials, which were appointed by Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (CMBG) for its splendid riverside woodland.

The exhibition composed of the five trolls aims to give visitors an emotional connection with nature that will encourage them to become keepers of it. For the exhibition, Thomas came up with a story that a family of trolls hid 10 golden seeds to protect the old forest. Using a map that's provided, visitors follow clues to find where the seeds are hidden.

Besides using carefully selected recycling materials to produce his works, to challenge himself creatively, the artist allowed for a degree of production on-site. He gave a skinny troll named Birk a beard made from the roots of fallen trees. The fur of another troll Roskva is made from bark. Also, Gro, sitting with her eyes closed in a yoga pose, has a tongue made out of a nearby deserted planter.

“Thomas wants people to interact with them,” says Gretchen, president of CMBG. “He wants it to be a journey of discovery where you're walking along and all of a sudden this big magical being appears in front of you. These are friendly, happy trolls. They're not scary, mean trolls.”

Thomas hopes that “Guardians of the Seeds” gives viewers the same joy he gets from an occupation that he compares to a hobby. He says too many people lose their playfulness in their adult life. The key quality of his work is just its playfulness. One of his trolls sits on a real car on a hillside, appearing to cheerfully ride it. He wants to reactivate a childlike imagination in adults so they begin to see trash as objects that can be repurposed in practical and even picturesque ways. And he loves to entertain kids, too.

Nowadays, Mr. Dambo gets a kick out of seeking waste everywhere, hoping to find more stuff he could refashion into something amazing.

1. What does the underlined word “discarded” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Given-out.B.Thrown-away.C.High-priced.D.Randomly-chosen.
2. What's the purpose of launching the exhibition?
A.To set off visitors' curiosity.B.To get back the 10 golden seeds.
C.To promote the popularity of CMBG.D.To boost the bond between visitors and nature.

8 . British sculptor Jason Taylor has made it his mission to use his talent to conserve our ecosystems by creating underwater museums. Over the years, the environmentalist has put over 850 massive artworks underwater worldwide. On February 1, 2021, Taylor launched his latest work---The Underwater Museum of Cannes.

“The main goal was to bring attention to the fact that our oceans need our help,” Taylor told Dezeen. “Ocean ecologies have been destroyed by human activity in the Mediterranean over the past few decades, and it is not obvious what is taking place when observing the sea from afar.”

The Underwater Museum of Cannes contains 6 sculptures featuring local residents of various ages. They range from Maurice, an 80-year-old fisherman, to Anouk, a 9-year-old student. Towering over 6-feet-tall and weighing 10 tons, the faces are sectioned into two parts, with the outer part like a mask. The mask indicates that the world’s oceans appear powerful and unbeatable from the surface but house an ecosystem that is extremely fragile to careless human activities.

Though the waters surrounding the sculptures now appear a pristine blue, the seabed was filled with old boat engines, pipes, and other human-made trash when the project began about four years ago. Besides removing the trash, Taylor also restored the area’s seagrass. Just one square meter of the seagrass can generate up to 10 liters of oxygen daily. The seagrass also helps prevent coastal erosion and provides habitats for many ocean creatures.

“The idea of creating an underwater museum was to draw more people underwater and develop a sense of care and protection,” Taylor told Dezeen. “If we threw unwanted waste near a forest, there would be a public outcry. But this is happening every day in our surrounding waters and it largely goes unnoticed.”

1. why does Jason Taylor create underwater museums ?
A.To protect the artworks underwater
B.To draw attention to endangered sea animals.
C.To show his sculpture talent.
D.To raise awareness of protecting the ocean.
2. Why does the outer part of the sculptures look like a mask?
A.To popularize the features of the locals.
B.To remind people to protect themselves.
C.To reflect people’s protection of the ocean.
D.To stress the fragility of the ecosystem.
3. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.How the project was started.
B.How the seagrass was restored.
C.What recovery effort the project made.
D.Why the surroundings were improved.
4. What can we infer from what Jason Taylor said in the last paragraph?
A.The situation of the ocean is easily ignored.
B.The destruction caused to the ocean is noticeable.
C.Forests play a more important role in ecosystems.
D.People have zero tolerance to damage done to nature.

9 . The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried in plastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be entirely made of used bottles.

The village will include about 120 homes of varying sizes. The design process begins with building frames of steel, which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical and plumbing lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17℃ cooler than the temperature outside.

The Village is the brainchild of Robert Bezeau with the intention of setting up several environmental projects. Having started a recycling program in 2012, during which a number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be put to use. Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea for the construction process.

Over 10,000 plastic bottles were used to build the first house, which was completed late last year. The bottles were obtained from the same recycling project that Robert had set up. The next home is expected to be bigger, and will need more bottles to build. The "re-constructed" homes will be sold on request for anywhere between $ 149,000 and $ 300,000. The community will also feature other facilities such as gardens, mini-parks, and more.

22,000 plastic bottles are deserted across the world per second. While all these bottles obviously cannot be reused into homes, the project hopes to raise awareness of the colossal waste that these bottles create. The village will also create an education center that will teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materials for shelter.

1. What is so special about the houses in the village?
A.They can save people from being buried in trash.B.They are mainly built out of plastic bottles.
C.They are being built by some researchers.D.They are sold at a very low price.

A.it provides cooler room temperatureB.it needs shorter construction period
C.it is equipped with latest technologyD.it can bring huge economic benefits
3. According to the text, the community           .
A.is made up of 120 homes of the same size
B.will start another recycling project in the future
C.is introducing modern technology to the villagers
D.will offer the villagers an access to better living conditions
4. Which is the best title of the passage?

10 . 请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英文写一篇 150 词左右的文章。

President Xi Jinping has called for garbage classification to be accelerated nationwide to help save resources and protect the environment. All major cities are expected to start garbage classification this year, and the system should be completed and function well by the end of 2025.

Yet the reality seems remote from the vision. Take Beijing, an early bird in garbage sorting, as an example. Even if the capital’s residents sort their garbage at home and throw them into different trash cans as required, almost all household garbage, including kitchen waste, is mixed up and transported away by the same rubbish truck.

Now it is the time for the government to reform its garbage disposal( 处 理 ) policies to ensure the formation of a complete industrial chain on garbage collection and recycling. For example, the household garbage disposal fee should be charged according to the total weight of the garbage each home produces in one year.

If the policy is carried on, resources can be saved and the environment improved.
