As I walked along the sidewalk in front of Surplus Unlimited, a car that was about to change my life had just turned onto Route 82 from the CVS parking lot. I looked up and noticed the elderly couple in the car heading toward me. As the car rolled past, the driver suddenly collapsed against the steering wheel (方向盘) right in front of my eyes. His wife stared blankly out of the passenger side window. She was unaware that her car was now rolling—without a conscious driver—down the center of a busy road.

I began to jog alongside the moving car. My mind assessed the situation. Somebody needed to stop that car!

I reached forward, but there was nothing to grab. I pounded on her window. She looked confused. “Roll down the window!” I yelled, gesturing wildly. With the window down, I was able to grab the doorframe. I pulled hard against the force of the moving vehicle. On the far side of the car, the traffic streamed by in the opposite direction. Cars passed one after another. Nobody slowed down. Nobody seemed to notice.

Thankfully, the driver’s foot must have slipped off the gas pedal (踏板) when he lost consciousness. I kept pulling, and the car began to slow.

Just then, a woman appeared from behind me. She ran alongside the driver side door. She opened the door and as the car was slowing, she managed to shift it out of “Drive”. A joyful “We did it!” feeling swept over me.

But the car was now stopped in the center lane (车道) with traffic still moving in both directions around us and we need to help this man. Quickly! The woman called 911 while I checked his vital signs. He was not breathing. He had no pulse. He had about five minutes until he was dead. CPR was needed in to time.

Thoughts started running through my mind.

In an instant, the man from the black SUV was standing beside me and said, “I am a doctor.”

A China Eastern Airlines jetliner carrying 132 people crashed in the mountains in southern China’s Guangxi region on Monday afternoon, according to the country’s Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC).

The Boeing 737     1    (fly) from the southwestern city of Kunming to Guangzhou when it lost contact over the city of Wuzhou. On board     2    (be) 123 passengers and nine crew members, CAAC said in a statement     3    (post) online. China Eastern Airlines confirmed those details and said it had activated emergency procedures, including a line for emergency assistance for family     4    (member). Rescue efforts are underway at the scene of the crash, but there were no immediate details on the possible cause or the number of casualties (伤亡者). China Eastern offered its condolences (哀悼) to those     5    were killed in the incident, without confirming any death toll (伤亡人数). “The cause of the plane crash is still     6    investigation. The company expresses its     7    (sorrow) condolences to the passengers and crew members who died in this plane crash,” the airline said in a     8    (state). Chinese President Xi Jinping instructed the country’s emergency services to “organize a search and rescue” operation and “identify the causes of the accident,” state media reported.

“After     9     accident, President Xi Jinping immediately made instructions to start the emergency mechanism, organize search and rescue, and     10    (proper) deal with the aftermath,” state broadcaster CCTV said.

A 30-year-old man was finally rescued from the Alaskan wilderness after his cabin burned down,     1     (leave) him trapped in the snow for almost three weeks.

Tyson Steele had been living alone     2     several months in a small house in Skwentna, a town     3     (locate) 70 miles northwest of Anchorage. He had been burning a fire in    4     (he) woodstove back in December when a piece of flaming cardboard     5     (fly) up his fireplace chimney and landed on his roof,     6     started a slow fire that eventually left the cabin in ruins. Since Skwentna only has a population of about 35 people, Steele’s     7     (near) neighbor lived about 20 miles away. With no means of     8     (communicate) to call for help, Steele endured sub-zero temperatures     9     severe weather conditions wearing long johns (秋裤), boots with no socks, and a heavy wool sweater.

When his family and friends hadn’t heard from Steele for several     10     (week), they requested a welfare check from Alaska State Troopers. As a helicopter flew over the area, they caught sight of Steele waving his arms in the air next to a massive “SOS” sign that he had stamped into the snow.
