5 . Coming of age is that time in each of our lives when we begin to see the possibilities. The world opens up in ways that mature our vision and give us a sense of responsibility and gratefulness. Connor had just started college and loved being at that stage in his life where he could eat all the pizza he wanted, yet engage in adult conversations with his parents about the responsibility to make life better for others. Connor’s optimism was infectious. There was so much he could do, and so much he could become.

But it all ended one night when Connor was distracted while driving on a Colorado highway. A young man, who gave off so much light, suddenly went dark.

Connor’s father, David, took it particularly hard.A father sees more than his own traits(性格) in his son; he sees greater possibilities than he achieved. Taking that hope away left David feeling at a loss. But Connor ‘s optimism was one of those traits passed on to him by his father. So, David got to work.

First, he established the Honor Connor Scholarship Fund to reward students who served in the community, Next, he went to work creating a research-based curriculum that educates University of Colorado Boulder students and their families about the dangers of texting while driving. It includes a very simple three part promise: Do not text or use social media while driving, speak out if riding with a driver who is distracted and encourage friends and family to drive phone-free.

David now works with lecturers at various colleges’ and high schools, ensuring young minds understand how statistically at risk they are when they text while driving. He’s become a passionate advocate for preparing young people to drive safely and not reach for their phones while they’re at the wheel. “I just don’t want other parents to go through what I did when I lost Connor,” says David. “It’s just so preventable.”

A fire started inside a big store on Main Street. Mario,     1     was the owner of the store, called out to     2     number of young men on the street for help right away.

“Help us!” Mario shouted. “I’m offering 1,000 dollars for putting out the fire!” In     3     (little) than three seconds, two men showed up in the store. They     4    (help) Mario to fight the fire, but five minutes later, things were still burning.

So Mario shouted, “ We need more help     5     (put) out the fire! I’m offering 2,000 dollars!” Another two men appeared in the store immediately, but     6    (fortunately) they didn’t seem to help much either.

It was     7     (wind) at the time, so everything was on fire pretty soon. Although everybody tried their best, the store was still     8     flames and it was time to get out. All of a sudden, an old bus came out of nowhere and drove straight in the center of the flames, along with some 60-year- old     9     (passenger). Before the bus stopped, all of them jumped out and fought the fire.

About half an hour later, the fire finally died down.

“Thanks for saving my store!” Mario said pleasantly,     10     (walk) up to those heroes with 2,000 dollars. “ What are you going to do with all this money, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“Well,” the bus driver answered, “ first we will probably fix the brakes on that bus.”

7 . “Fire! Fire! ” What terrible words to hear when I _______ in a strange house in the middle of the night! It was a large, _______ house — the sort that burns easily — and my room was on the top floor. I jumped out of bed, opened the door and stepped out into the passage. It was full of _______.

I began to _______, but as I was still only half awake, instead of going towards the stairs I went in the opposite direction. The smoke grew thicker and I found it hard to _______. The floor became _______ under my feet. I ran into another room and tried to reach the window for fresh air. Suddenly, one of my feet got caught in something _______ and I fell down. The thing I had fallen over felt like a package of clothes, and I picked it up to protect my _______ from the smoke and heat. Just then the floor broke under me and I fell through to the floor below with pieces of _______ wood all around me.

__________, there was a doorway in front, so I put the package over my face and ran. My feet were terribly burned, but I __________. As I reached the cold air outside, my package of clothes gave a __________. I nearly dropped it in my surprise. Then I saw there were many people in the street. A woman screamed (尖叫) as she saw me and came running __________.

“My baby! My baby! ”she cried. Those people cheered loudly __________ she took the smoke­blackened package out of my arms. I almost failed to see who she was — my boss's wife. I had __________ her baby, and I became a hero!

8 . Traffic Accidents and Road Safety

The number of road accidents and the deaths arising from those accidents has increased greatly over the past year.       1    .

We must all be aware of the causes of traffic accidents and act to prevent them. This is true of everyone as accidents affect driven of vehicles as well as cyclists and pedestrians. We all have a responsibility to prevent accidents. Here are some of the major causes of road accidents.

●Driven not paying attention

This is the most common cause of accidents.     2     they are not prepared when another driver does something wrong, like changing paths without signalling or giving wrong signals.

●Drivers being impatient in a traffic jam

Many drivers are aggressive and push into other paths of traffic or overtake other cars. These are both very dangerous because they can easily lead to crashes.

Recently the number of people fined for speaking on their mobile phoned while driving has increased by 30 percent. Speaking on the phone requires concentration and takes a driver's attention from the road.

●Drinking and driving

If you drive after you have had alcoholic drinks, you are breaking the law and risking your own life as well as the lives of others     4    , even if they have had just couple of beers, do not allow them to drive.

●Drivers speeding

Speed kills This is a fact that is easily overlooked, but driving too fast through city streets is very irresponsible and dangerous. Our city streets are away busy with people, cars and bicycles.     5    . They should be especially careful near schools, where there are likely to be many children.
