Travel Is Good For Your Health

Americans are losing their vacation days, leading to more stress, anxiety and other negative effects because of not taking time off from work. In fact, a report by Project: Time Off, shows U.S. employees took about 16 vacation days in 2013, down from about 20 in 2000. Apart from taking away yourself the chance to improve your productivity and work performance, not taking a break can lead to overloaded stress and other potentially damaging.     1

After all, vacations offer the chance to relax and restore your health.     2     You should travel to new places because traveling somewhere new can enable you to put yourself in new surroundings and recharge your brain power.

3     According to Dr. Margaret J. King, the director of the Center for Cultural Studies & Analysis, “There are lots of psychological benefits when you travel from home and work to ‘third places’, not just experiencing the environment. With a short list of activities each day, freed up from the projects and relationships, the mind can reset, as does the body, with stress relief the main outcome.” she says.

Little sleep mixed with high stress can lead to anger and negative consequences on your cognitive performance and efficiency. Max Hirshkowitz, chairman of the board of the National Sleep Foundation says a vacation is a great opportunity to catch up on sleep.     4     “Keep that time,” he says. “Make it an important thing you need.”

Many studies suggest that travel can improve our emotional state. A 2014 survey conducted by Diamond Resorts International found over three-quarters of people said feeling happier when they planned a trip at least once a year. Dr. Leigh Vinocur, a certified physician and spokesperson for the American College of Emergency Physicians, isn’t surprised by the findings. “It’s hard to sit on a beautiful beach somewhere and think about paperwork or deadlines. That is why over three-quarters of people to the Diamond Resorts International survey reported feeling happier when they regularly had a vacation. Regular vacations while taking time for yourself and your family lowers your stress level.     5    ” she says. Besides, studies show that looking back on the pleasant vacation may keep happiness long after your trip.

【推荐1】When should you worry about your teens? Many parents feel alarmed about how much their teen has changed, practically overnight, from their sweet, innocent child to a moody, rough teenager.     1     That’s what they have to experience based on their stage in development.

It can be hard to tell what to worry about, but first, know what is normal. Adaptation, for example, can be challenging for everyone. Starting high school and graduating are natural points for stress.     2     What we expect is this anxiety will fade relatively quickly, in a few weeks or so. Kids are learning to adapt and getting in their own experience for their future life. However, anxiety that lasts can be a red flag.

Anxiety doesn’t always look like what you’d expect.     3     It can also be physical like stomachaches, headaches or tense muscles. If this sounds like a teen you live with, there are ways to help get them back on track to success and managing anxiety well. You can talk to them, sending them a message that they don’t have to go through this alone and encourage self-care through sleep routines, showering, exercise or even eating.

4     The constant surfing on the internet is hard on anxiety and affects sleep. Think about ways to get your child to turn off’ before bed like reading or a quiet hobby, focusing on helping them go to sleep and wake up at a consistent time.

Finally, know that treatment is very effective for practical anxiety management.     5

A.In fact, this is typically normal.
B.It never hurts to consult a professional.
C.These changes may bring on some anxiety.
D.Try to find out how it affects a teen’s functioning.
E.You may feel painful watching your child struggle.
F.Managing devices and social media is another challenge.
G.It can be a lot of worrying and questioning about things which are safe.

【推荐2】It happens every night — bedtime. But what if you’re not sleepy? Should you still go to bed and just lie there with your eyes wide open?     1     But don’t worry. Here are some steps you can take to help you fall asleep.

One thing that can help is talking to a parent about what you’re thinking about at bedtime. For example, if you’re nervous about taking a test, or upset about being teased at school, it can really help to tell somebody.     2

3     If there’s anything about your room that makes you feel uneasy or anxious at night, like a picture that looks strange in the dark, or a leaking bathroom tap, ask your parent to move or fix it. Make sure electronics are kept away from your bed as their lights and noise can make it harder for you to fall asleep.

If you’re often nervous around bedtime, doing certain things to calm yourself may help you fall asleep. Taking a warm bath, or listening to a bedtime story at least 30 minutes before bed may help you relax. It also helps to follow a bedtime routine and go to sleep at the same time every night.     4

In order to find the right solution for you, it’s important that you understand what exactly is keeping you up at night.     5     Your body will thank you for the effort.

A.Take the time to think about the problem carefully.
B.But what works for others may not necessarily work for you.
C.Sleeping in a comfortable bed in a quiet and cool room is ideal.
D.In this way, your body will get the message that it’s almost time to sleep.
E.Calming music played at a low volume can help the stress flow out of your body.
F.It’s a problem that has been around as long as there have been people trying to sleep.
G.Knowing that somebody has heard you can help ease your mind so that you can rest.

【推荐3】Why do some people live to be older than others? You know the standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity(长寿)? Do some kinds of personalities lead to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at this question by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100.

The study shows that those living the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic (神经质的) than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory: those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times.

Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined, for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways.

Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible.

Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother’s personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when we’re adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger.

Personality isn’t destiny, and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.

B.They are better at negotiating an agreement.
C.They generally appear more resourceful.
