Though I have twin sisters who are a year younger than I am, I still wanted one more guy in the house when I was 5 or 6. In 2002, my mom and dad went back to the adoption agency (收养机构) in Korea where they got my sisters and me. They came home with George.

He seemed fine at first. But six months later, when he was around l, my mom and dad told us George wouldn’t grow up like us. They said George has autism (自闭症) and that he’d have more challenges. One day my parents brought home some sign-language videos. They said we were all going to learn signing together. That was when I knew George might never talk.

Living with George can be a roller coaster ride. He wants to play all the time, which makes him lovable. But he can be aggressive (有攻击性的). If he doesn’t get what he wants, he throws a fit. When George acts like this at home, I take him to the couch or the floor and lie with him until he cools off. That’s my role. I often have to hold him down when he loses control of himself. I’m the only one in myhome who isstrong enough to handle George physically at this point, which is difficult.

I thought having a brother would mean I’d have someone on my side all the time. I thought that if I had a fight with my sisters, I’d have him at my back. It didn’t end up that way. But the people in your life are there for a reason. Having George in the family has made us all closer. He’s not only a connection point, but a responsibility that we all share. It has taught us to compromise (妥协).

1. What can we learn about the author’s family?
A.The family had their first child in 2002.
B.The brothers and sisters have no blood relationship.
C.There are five people in the family altogether.
D.The family communicate with each other in sign language.
2. The underlined part “throws a fit” in Paragraph 3 probably means“______.”
A.gets very angryB.turns to others
C.does it himselfD.keeps silent
3. We can infer from the last paragraph that______.
A.George always supports the authorB.George has learned to compromise
C.the author loves George very muchD.the author often fights with his sisters

【推荐1】The Secret of a Long Life

I am Peter Brown. I am a writer with an important magazine. The other day I saw a white-haired man sitting on the chair in front of his house. I could see the wrinkles (皱纹) in his face and neck, and his wrinkled hands. Articles on the secrets of living to an old age are always popular with our readers, so I decided to write a story and discover the secret of this man's long life. As I went near him, I said:

“Sir, would it be okay if I talked with you for just a moment?”

“Not at all. Actually, it would make me very happy. I get very bored sitting here, even for a short time. Until a little while ago, I lived a full and active life without a moment's rest.”

“Well, they say that a lot of activities help one to live a long time.”

“That's true, very true. I still feel very well, although my step has slowed down a little.”

The conversation continued in that way for a while. Although I tried to be very thoughtful about getting information from older people, it seemed to me that it would now be all right to begin to ask some polite questions.

“Would it be okay if I smoked?”

“Not at all.”

“I'd offer you one, but I suppose you probably don't smoke, or drink, or ...”

“You're wrong! I've always smoked a great deal. And until a little while ago, I went dancing every night. And as for alcoholic drinks ...”

“Do you mean to say that you've done these things all your life?”

“Of course. Why does that surprise you so much?”

“I've always been told that doing those things is bad for the health.”

“Nonsense!”

“I suppose that you have another secret ... a lot of fruit ... vegetables ... a lot of exercise in the fresh air ...”

“Don't be silly! I hate exercise in the fresh air, and I don't like any kind of vegetable.”

“This is unbelievable!”

“What do you mean, unbelievable? What are you talking about?”

“It's just that I can't understand how you've been able to live like that and to have lasted so long. Tell me, how old are you?”

“Me? I'm twenty-eight. Why?”

1. Why did Peter Brown decide to write a story about the man?
A.Because the man looked healthy.
B.Because he thought the man looked cool.
C.Because the man was white-haired and wrinkled.
D.Because readers are interested in the secret of a long life.
2. What would the man probably say after “And as for alcoholic drinks ...”?
A.I don't like them.
B.I drink a little.
C.They're my favorite.
D.They cost too much.
3. According to the story, the man ________.
A.smokes a lot
B.often eats vegetables
C.likes doing sports
D.stays at home every night

【推荐2】“Mom, could you read to me?” My son, who was suffering from a virus, was lying on the floor of our living room, where he usually went when he was sick. Fourteen years old might seem old for being read to, but appearing grown-up wasn’t his priority at this point. He was looking for comfort, distraction and wanted to feel cared for.

I’d actually kept reading to him through his childhood and called it quits when we got into the preteen authority fight. When I read to him, I chose books that I loved, often books that he wouldn’t have gotten through on his own. Saying that he didn’t like the fantasy stories I’d adored myself at his age, he expressed an interest in nonfiction. Therefore, I put my own past preferences aside and looked for true stories that would grab his attention, and that he could read on his own. His shifting adolescent interest meant that the book I’d ordered for him yesterday was sometimes dismissed when it arrived, but I just put it aside for later. Its time might come around again.

Now, though, he was asking me again, and I was glad to do anything that might give him relief. The purpose was neither knowledge learning nor a display of authority. He was seeking rest for his unsettled mind and body, and by reading to him, I could see that it supported his healing, as surely as the hot lemon and ginger tea and getting plenty of sleep did.

I am sure that reading to my son has enhanced his school learning — his teacher has been amazed by his writing abilities —but more importantly, it has helped to make our bond stronger, giving us something in common to enjoy together. When the arguments and disagreements erupt, we can always come back to this simple activity of reading and listening, a union of souls that leaves us both completely free.

A.She read to him.B.She ignored him.

A.Opposed.B.Worried.C.Unconcerned.D.Acceptable.

A.Giving him comfort.B.Strengthening their ties.
C.Helping him grow more rapidly.D.Promoting his school learning.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.The Importance of BondB.The Benefits of Reading
C.Reading and BondingD.Caring for Your Sick Child

【推荐3】A little girl ran to her bedroom and pulled out her piggy bank (储蓄罐) from a secret drawer in her closet. She took the change from it and counted it carefully three times.

She carefully placed the coins in a jar and twisted on the cap. She took the jar and slipped out of the back door. She made her way six blocks to a drug store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist (药剂师) to give her some attention but he was too busy attending other customers at that moment. She tried several times to get his attention but failed. Finally, she took a quarter from her jar and hit it on the glass counter, which was finally able to get her some attention.

“What do you want, little Miss?” the pharmacist asked the tiny girl in the front of his counter. “My brother is really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle,” the girl answered back. “I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “My brother is really sick and my daddy says only a miracle can cure him now. So, I want to get a miracle for him. How much does it cost?” “I’m sorry but I can’t help you. We don’t sell miracles here, little girl,” the pharmacist said, softening a little.

Next to the little girl was a tall well-dressed man. He lowered himself and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” the girl replied with her eyes in tears. “I just know he is very sick and has something bad growing inside his head. Doctor says he needs an operation. But daddy can’t afford it, so we need a miracle to save him now. I can use all my money to save my brother.” “How much do you have?” asked the man. “One dollar and twelve cents, it’s all the money I have now, but I can get some more if needed,” the girl answered in a whisper. “Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “That is the exact price of a miracle for a little brother. Take me to your brother. Let’s see if I have the miracle your brother needs.”

The man was a famous nuerosurgeon (神经外科医生). He was just the right person needed to save the little boy’s life. The operation was completed without any charges and it went successfully.
