First aid means the aid or the help that can be given to an injured person first, that is, before any other help arrives. Nowadays there is usually a telephone not far away and the first we should do, if a serious accident happens, is to call for an ambulance. Sometimes quick action by us may save someone’s life.

Shock. People often suffer from shock after receiving an injury, sometimes even when the injury is a small one. The face turns grey, and the skin becomes damp and cold. They breathe quickly. They should be kept warm. Cover them with a blanket and give them a warm drink.

Broken bones. Do not move the patient. Send for an ambulance at once.

Bleeding. A little bleeding doesn't harm. It washes dirt from the wound. But if the bleeding continues, try to stop it by placing a clean cloth firmly over the wound until the bleeding stops or help arrives.

Poison. A person who has taken poison should be taken to a hospital at once. With some poisons, sleeping pills, for example, it is a good thing to make the patient throw up by pressing your fingers down his throat.

Remember: When an accident happens, send someone to telephone for an ambulance at once. Keep the injured person warm and quiet. Give him plenty of air. Do not let other people crowd around him.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。主要讨论了政府提供免费医疗保健,人们对此的不同看法和作者的看法。

【推荐1】Health care is regarded as an important way to improve the health and well-being of people around the world. In many countries of the world, free health care is provided by the government.     1

Clearly, we all have to pay for this service through our taxes.

2     They say that people who take unnecessary risks should not receive this free health care. For example, people who join in risky activities such as skiing are more likely to have an accident. It has been suggested that these people should pay for any medical treatment they require.

3     Firstly, it’s difficult to say exactly what is risky and what is not. For example, not doing enough exercise is probably more risky than skiing in the long run. As a result, it isn’t fair to give free health care to an inactive person and make the skier pay.     4     Clearly, these people should receive free medical treatment if they are hurt on the job.

Finally, I would like to say that I think free health care is a good thing. I understand that the system is not perfectly fair because some people use it more than others. Besides, not all the medical treatment is really necessary for the health of the patient. The taxpayer should not have to pay the costs of such treatment.     5

A.It helps you make money.
B.Personally, I disagree with this point of view.
C.However, some people think this is basically unjust.
D.This means that everybody has a chance to see a doctor.
E.Free health care will decrease the economy of the country.
F.Besides, fire fighters take risks, but they are necessary risks.
G.However, in my opinion, this is a small price to pay for a healthier society.

【推荐2】Many of us are familiar with the anxiety that can consume us ahead of speaking or performing in public. Throats run dry, sweat drops, and it can feel like everyone hears your quickly beating heart. But scientists wondered: Is the anxiety driving the heart to beat faster or could an increased heart rate cause anxiety?

A new study published today explores this link in mice, showing that speeding up a mouse’s heart rate made otherwise calm animals act more anxious. The finding indicates heart activity can influence mental state — and finding ways to lower heart rate may be a way to treat mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

The research team introduced ChRmine (泵状光敏感通道蛋白) into heart muscle cells of live mice whose torsos (躯干) were fitted with a vest equipped with a micro light-emitting bulb (电灯泡). Light from the bulb then shined the skin of the mice to stimulate ChRmine within the cells. The result: a small pacemaker made the animals’ hearts beat faster.

Because the team could just turn the light on and off, “we were now able to control heart rates using this wearable,” said Ritchie Chen, a bioengineer at Stanford and an author of the study.

In the future, Deisseroth and his team want to make periods longer than used in the current experiment to see whether increased heart rate over weeks or months can lead to an increase or worsening of anxiety or depression like behaviors.

If the findings can be copied in other settings, particularly with people, they could have potentials for treating mental health conditions. Current medicines are not foolproof and often take months to work. Going through the heart may be a quicker, more effective alternative. “Operating the heart is much easier than operating the brain,” Gogolla says. “We may actually unlock new treatment strategies for patients with anxiety or depressive disorder.”

2. Why is the bulb used in the experiment?
A.To see more clearly.B.To relieve anxiety.
C.To stimulate ChRmine in the cells.D.To rid the fear of mice.
3. What does Gogolla suggest?
A.Clarifying the purpose of the study.B.Realizing the potential of the findings.
C.Conducting research on human beings only.D.Carrying out new strategies in the experiment.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.New Dawn on Mood DisordersB.Links between the Heart and the Brain

【推荐3】Here’s an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn’t require an actual shot.

For the first time, researchers have tested a flu vaccine patch (疫苗贴) in a human clinical experiment and found that it delivered as much protection as a traditional injection with a needle. Doctors and public health experts have high hopes that it will increase the number of people who get immunized (免疫的) against the flu.

Seasonal flu is responsible for up to half a million deaths around the world each year according to the World Health Organization. A team led by Georgia Tech engineer Mark Prausnitz has come up with an alternative method that uses “microneedles”. These tiny needles are so small that 100 of them, arranged in order on a patch, can fit under your thumb (拇指). Yet they’re big enough to hold vaccine for three types of flu.

None of the study volunteers had serious side effects. The groups that got patches had mild skin reactions that were not seen in the regular needle group, while the volunteers in the regular needle group were more likely to experience pain. Overall, 70 percent of the volunteers who got vaccine patches said they’d rather use them again than get a traditional flu shot. The study authors declared it a success on all fronts.

The biggest beneficiaries could be people in low- and middle-income countries, where flu vaccines are hard to come by. Reducing pain is nice, but other benefits—the patch costs less, is easier to transport, doesn’t require refrigeration, can be self-administered and doesn’t cause waste of needles—are even better.

“Microneedle Patches have the potential to become ideal candidates for vaccination programs,” wrote Katja Hoschler and Maria Zambon of Public Health England.

A.A vaccine that cures people of their flu.
B.A team that does research on seasonal flu.

D.A method that makes traditional flu shot painless.
2. What do we know about the vaccine patch?
A.It causes slight side effects.
B.It causes serious skin reactions.
C.It delivers vaccine on the head.
D.It works badly on 30% of the volunteers.
3. The new patch has all the following benefits except that       .
A.it is provided free of charge
B.it can be used without doctors
C.it can be kept at room temperature
D.it needs less care in transportation
4. What is Katja and Maria’s attitude towards the new shot?
A.Cautious.B.Favorable.
C.Unclear.D.Disapproving.
