Home fires can happen quickly, destroying lives and property(财产)but unlike other disasters, most home fires can be prevented Read on to learn 4 unexpected home fire dangers.Having old smoke alarms
An effective smoke alarm can make all the difference when it comes to surviving a house fire. It's not enough to change the batteries twice a year. You also need to replace your alarms every decade. "You should test your smoke alarms every month," says Lorriane Carli, vice president of promotion and advocacy for the National Fire Protection Association. "But also don't forget to check the dates and replace an alarm that is more than 10 years old."
Leaving the kitchen while you cook
One in five Americans admitted leaving food cooking unattended on the stove, found an American Red Cross survey. Walking away from food cooking in the kitchen is a serious fire risk. "The leading cause of home fire is cooking and the leading cause of those fires is unattended cooking." says Carli. If you need to use the stove or oven, be sure to keep an eye on it.
Turning the heat too high when you cook
Cranking up the heat too high can be deadly, even if you're in the kitchen while you cook. Kevin Kelley, senior director of community preparedness programs for the American Red Cross, recommends paying close attention and turning off the burner if you see smoke or grease (油脂) starting to boil while frying food.
Having a dirty stove while you cook
If your stove is covered with grease, a small kitchen fire can get out of hand quickly. Clean and clear the area around the stove before turning on the heat. Or the result will be dangerous.

How to use the quick search

Everything was fine for a few days until one afternoon there was a strange bumping noise on a window. Emily went outside and found a small bird dead on the grass. Its neck seemed to be broken.
“It must have flown into the window,” Alex said when his sister Emily called him to have a look. “Ah, yes, look here. You can see the mark where it hit the window. There are a couple of tiny feathers stuck (粘贴)on the window.”
“Poor thing!” Emily said.
During the next month, five more birds died in the same way. “Why would they fly to the windows?” they wondered. Finally they found out the truth. When the birds were flying, they couldn’t see into the rooms. All they saw was the reflection (反射)of the garden. They thought that they were flying into trees because they saw trees reflected by the window.
“Something has to be done to save the birds,” the parents decided.
At first, the family tried keeping curtains(窗帘)across the windows, but this made the room dark. Then they bought some strong black paper and cut out the shape of a hawk(鹰). They made six hawks—one for each window. They stuck the hawks to the windows. They looked pretty and did not keep out much light. When the birds saw the hawks, they would fly away.
After that, there were no more dead birds. The family were much happier.

I want you to remember that you must be good to each other. You must take care of one another in times of need. Wherever I am, I’ll have my eye on you.” I believed her.
Mother died when she was 84. After the funeral, the four of us children made a promise to continue the tradition of the reunion. The next year my husband and I decided to arrange for our first reunion. I hoped the rest of the family would agree. Although we were close, we had our troubles. I was especially worried about my brother’s wife, Gina. She was on the sensitive side and after a misunderstanding, we never spoke again.
Then, to my surprise, Gina called. She and my brother would be arriving in New York a day early to attend a meeting. “Can you join us in the city for dinner?” she asked. I thought about all the last-minute errands (差事) I had to do and said, “I don’t have time.” Gina hung up. As usual, she had taken my refusal personally.
That night I couldn’t sleep. I thought of Mother’s speech: “You must be good to each other … You must take care of one another.” I called Gina first thing the next morning. “I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to dinner,” I said. “I am really looking forward to seeing you.”
“Me too,” she admitted. It was a start.
The reunion turned out to be happy for everyone. Gina and I made up, and sat next to each other and talked a lot.

【推荐3】An old man went to live with his son, his daughter-in-law, and a four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was very poor, and he couldn’t walk steadily (平稳地). The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Rice often dropped on the floor.
The son and the daughter-in-law became angry with the old man, so they put a small table in the corner. There, the grandfather ate alone, while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the table. Since the grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.
The four-year-old son watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with a piece of wood on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?” The boy answered, “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up.” The four-year-old son smiled and went back to work. The words struck the parents so hard that they were in silence. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks (脸颊). Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the family table.
1. Why was the old man’s food served in a wooden bowl?A.Because the wooden bowl was light enough. |

Louis Pasteur (1822—1895)
Pasteur contributed greatly towards the advancement of medical sciences, developing cures for rabies (狂犬病), anthrax and other infectious diseases. He also invented the process of pasteurization (加热杀菌法) to make milk safer to drink. He probably saved more lives than any other person.
Otto Hahn (1879—1968)
Hahn was a German chemist who discovered nuclear fission (裂变) in 1939. He was a pioneering scientist in the field of radio-chemistry, and discovered radioactive elements in1921. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1944.
Nikola Tesla (1856—1943)
Tesla worked on electromagnetism and AC current. He obtained around 300 patents worldwide for his inventions from electricity to radio transmission, but many inventions developed by Tesla were not put into patent protection. He played a key role in the development of modern electricity.

【推荐2】Michael, a typical American, stays home on workdays. He plugs into his personal computer terminal in order to connect with the office. After work, he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder, or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn’t talk to any other human beings, and he doesn’t see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary, but his life style is very possible. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off from contact with our fellow human beings.
The world of business is one area in which technology is isolating us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminals in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they’re dealing with. In addition, the way employees are paid will change. Workers’ salaries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper checks unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their check. Personal banking will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take out money from their accounts. Another area that technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms.
1. After work, Michael likes to ________.A.listen to music at the concert hall |

Now, one American airline is hoping technology will help deal with the mess. Alaska Airlines will begin allowing customers to attach electronic tags to their suitcases in hopes of speeding up the airport check-in process and freeing up workers’ time for other tasks.
With the new tags, travelers won’t have to wait in line to print baggage tags at the airport. Instead, they’ll be able to attach the tag to their baggage at home, and then activate it up to 24 hours before going away through the airline’s mobile app. They need to touch the phone to the tag. Once activated, the tag uses e-paper technology to display the guest’s flight information and a bar code on its small screen. The bag’s owner will then be able to leave it at a marked self-drop location at the airport. The equipment does not contain batteries and gets a small amount of energy from the phone used to activate it.
Alaska Airlines expects the electronic tags to cut the time travelers spend dropping off their checked bags by 40 percent. “With the new device, the entire check-in process should only take a few minutes. The electronic tags should also help shorten lines at the airport,” Charu Jain, an Alaska Airlines’ manager, says.
Alaska Airlines will firstly provide free tags for about 2,500 frequent fliers, and then the company will make the tags available to all of its loyalty program members in early 2023. The airline does not share the price of the tags; however, they’re listed as starting at around $72 on Bag tag’s website. Alaska Airlines’ workers have put the tags to the test. They stood up well to wear and tear, and airline officials say they could last a lifetime.
