Meat and vegetables are measured in grams and kilograms. Milk and other liquid foods are measured in liters or milliliters. These units only measure quantity: they do not measure the value of the food to the body. The unit which measures the quality or value of food is the calorie(热量单位:卡). This measurement tells how much energy a certain food has when it is completely used by the body.
Our bodies use various amount of calories. The more exercise we take, the more calories we burn. If we eat food which contains more calories than we use up, then it is possible that we would increase in weight. In order to avoid becoming overweight, it is advisable to eat a balanced diet and not to eat too many foods that have more calories. It is all part of an effort to cut calorie intake by 20% by 2024. The target will point to 13 different food groups, which are equal to about a fifth of the calorie taken by children. If action is not taken, PHE said, it would be prepared to ask the government to pass laws.
PHE would strictly monitor the progress by looking at which products people buy and would be prepared to punish companies which do not take on their duties. The government is also organizing a program encouraging adults to consume (吃,喝) 400 calories at breakfast and 600 each at lunch and dinner.
At present, adults consume between 200 and 300 calories more than they should each day. PHE chief nutritionist Dr. Alison Tedstone said the 400600600 tip would make it easier for people to make healthier choices by being able to judge what they should eat at each meal.
How many calories should we eat? It is suggested that a woman eat no more than 2,000 calories a day, while a man should limit his intake to 2,500. For children, it depends on the age. A fouryearold should consume no more than 1,300 calories a day, while for teens aged 17 and 18, it is about 3,000, but overweight children are eating up to 500 calories more than that.
Prof Russell Viner, from the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, said it was a necessary move. He said, “Over the past 40 years, there has been slow growth in food sizes, with pizzas and hamburgers simply much bigger than they were in our parents' time.” The convenience of fast food and the advertisement of unhealthy food and drinks to children add to the problem.

One common cause is food, and some common dietary causes include alcohol, salt, sugar, chocolate, and caffeine. But there are many others, and scientists continue to identify more. Last year, for example, a Brazilian study found that watermelons brought on a headache within minutes in about 30 percent of the participants.
Some new researches are looking at which foods and what kinds of diets can prevent or lessen migraines. A new study published last year by a team of researchers found that a diet higher in fish oils rather than vegetable oils helped people ease their headaches. In the study, those on a diet lower in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish had a 30 to 40 percent reduction in total headache hours per day, serious headache hours per day, and overall headache days per month compared to the control group.
Tanya Kamka had suffered weekly migraines for most of her life. Then, in her 50s, she joined the NIH diet experiment and increased her intake of fish. After only a few months, “I haven’t had a migraine, not even a mild one, in over two years.” she says.
For others, the solution comes from plants, not fish. A 60-year-old man joined a study on the food-migraine link and turned to a diet, which includes a lot of dark, leafy greens. After two months he was experiencing only one migraine a month instead of the 18 to 24 a month he’d suffered before.
Clearly, people with migraines react to food in very different ways. What works for one person may not work for another.

They say that there are several kinds of food that people should eat every day, they are: (1) green and yellow vegetables of all kinds; (2) citrus (柑桔) fruits and tomatoes; (3) potatoes and other fruits and vegetables; 94) meat of all kinds, fish and eggs; (5) milk and foods made from milk; (6) bread or cereal (谷类), rice is also in this kind of food; (7) butter, or something like butter.
People in different countries and different places of the world eat different kinds of things. Foods are cooked and eaten in many different kinds of ways. People in different countries eat at different times of the day. In some places people eat once or twice a day; in other countries people eat three or four times a day. Scientists say that none of the differences is really important. It doesn’t matter whether foods are eaten raw or cooked, canned (罐装的) or frozen (冷冻的). It doesn’t matter if a person eats dinner at 4 o’clock in the afternoon or at eleven o’clock at night. The important thing is what you eat every day.
There are two problems, then, in feeding the large number of people on the earth. The first is to find some way to feed the world’s population so that no one is hungry. The second is to make sure that people everywhere have the right kinds of food to make them grow to be strong and healthy.

Now, American researchers have discovered a second species of crow with the same ability. They reported on their experiments with Alala crows, which are from the Hawaiian Islands.
In the experiment, the researchers placed pieces of food in holes inside the wood. The holes were too deep for the crows to reach with their beaks(鸟喙). But, by using small pieces of wood held in their beaks, Alala crows quickly got the food. They used small objects as tools, sometimes changing them by shortening too-long sticks. They also made tools from plant materials.
“The crows use their beaks as people use thumbs on their hands. Tool use is rare in the animal kingdom. ” said Chritian Rutz of University of St. Andrews. “Current evidence strongly suggests that tool use is part of the species’ natural behavioral pattern(行为模式). These birds had no special training in the study, yet most of them were skilled at handling stick tools. ”
Bird experts claim finding out that the crows use tools is important discovery. “It makes us rethink how to look at the whole tool-use idea now and encourages us to go out and look for things that we may have ignored before. ”
All the Alala crows left in the world live in Hawaii. There were less than 20 Alalas left in the late 1990s when scientists decided to bring them into a protected area. Now, it is reported that there are over 100 birds living there. Scientists plan to release a small number of the birds back into the wild later.

A Chalmers University of Technology study may explain the contradictory(矛盾的)results. The study compared blood samples and diet questionnaires from 842 participants, half of whom developed type 2 diabetes after about seven years. This showed that fish consumption as a whole has no effect on diabetes risk. Then, using a new data-analysis method, said one of the study author. "We screened(筛查)out the effect of environmental pollutants. We were then able to see that fish itself provides clear protection against type 2 diabetes.
However, participants who ate a lot of fatty fish, such as salmon, also had high levels of environmental pollutants in their blood. These fish are the most likely to contain accumulated pollutants such as DDT and PCB, which have both previously been linked to increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
To make sure the fish you eat is free from pollutants, check the Environmental Defense Fund's Seafood Selector(seafood edf.org) for the choices least likely to contain them, then look for wild-caught fish from sustainable sources, such as those certified by Marine Stewardship Council.
