Returning to a book you’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. But books don’t change, people do. And that’s     1     makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative. The     2     (beautiful) of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s about the now and what     3     (contribute) to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. There are three books I reread     4     (annual). The first, which I take to reading every spring is Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast.     5     (Publish) in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的), an aging writer looking back on     6     ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm. The     7    (three) book is Julio Cortazar’s Save Twilight.   While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts,     8     might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open    9    (far) as time passes. But remember, it’s you that has     10    (grow) and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.

I can still remember the afternoon when we climbed the mountain as if it were yesterday.

It was a sunny day. Eager to spend some time outside, I went up the mountain with my uncle. The mountain was hard       1    (climb) and had tough rocks and streams on it. In the end,     2     (exhaust) and hot, I couldn’t go any further. So we went back down the mountain in the end.

On the way back down, my uncle asked me a question,     3     left me speechless for a second: “What’s your dream, young lady?”

“I have no idea,” I answered     4    thinking about it for a while. Then he smiled and told me about his story. He didn’t perform well at school when he was a student. Although nobody thought he could succeed, he knew clearly       5    his dream was-----to be a businessman. “I knew I wasn’t gifted when it came to studying, so I tried to buy snacks from a market and sell them after class,” he told me. After he left school, he started selling different items to find out which one was most attractive to customers. Of course, he often had no money in his pocket, but     6     tough life was, he never gave up.

“There is no doubt that a person who puts in a great deal of effort to reach his or her goal will have good luck at some point. The meaning of life is to chase your dream,” he said gently.

That night I     7     hardly fall asleep. I lay in bed tossing and turning, asking myself, “What’s my motivation?”

I once wanted to be a top student, but the hard work needed meant       8     (put) everything into following my passion. If I find myself lacking willpower, what should I do? Leaving home early the next morning, I climbed the mountain again by       9    . It made me think: If we don’t experience the climb, how can we get to see the scenery on the top of the mountain? In the end, I reached the top and       10     (fascinate) by the warm breeze and sunshine. Nothing could be more pleasant than that.

On a weekend in early October, Hu Wenjue and a group of children gathered in a wetland park. Hu pointed at a wild bird and spoke in a low voice while the children were listening     1     (careful).

Hu is a pioneer in nature education in Hefei, Anhui Province. He     2     (found) an organization five years ago to offer several nature- based     3     (program) for children under 12 years old. Through various outdoor activities, such as     4     (identify) plants and exploring forests, nature education aims     5     (teach) participants, mostly urban residents, how to appreciate, respect and live in harmony     6     nature.

“Respecting the laws of nature and coexisting with nature harmoniously, we could change our lifestyle for the better and it is a virtuous cycle (良性循环), ” Hu said. He hopes to see more people protect nature    7     promote green development and ecological civilization in China.

In recent years, great development     8    (see) in nature education in China,       9     is nourished (滋养) by the country’s rich natural resources such as nature reserves, forest parks, wetland parks and geological parks.

“Nature is generous to us if     10     (give) more effective protection, and don’t forget that we all belong to nature,” Hu said.

There are many things in Chengdu that attract people. But for tourists like me, pandas are its top     1     (attract).

So it was a great honour for me     2     (invite) to the not-for-profit Panda Base, where ticket money helps pay for research. I     3     (allow) to get up close to these cute animals at the 600-acre center. From tomorrow, I will be their UK ambassador (大使). The title will be     4     (official) given to me at a ceremony in London. But my connection with pandas goes back     5     my days on a TV show in the mid-1980s,     6     I was the first Western TV reporter permitted to film a special unit caring for pandas     7     (save) from starvation (饿死) in the wild. My duties will include     8     (introduce) British visitors to the 120-plus pandas in Chengdu and others at a research center in the misty mountains of Bifengxia.

During my recent visit, I held a lively three-month-old twin that had been refused by his mother. The nursery team switches (交换)him every few     9     (day) with his sister so that while one is being bottle-fed,     10     other is with their mum —she never doubts.

More and more animals are entering cities because urban development and climate change push the animals out of their natural     1    (habitat). In other words, it is we humans     2     have moved into their territory and they have no choice but     3    (move) in with us. Cities     4     (actual) provide some benefits for the animals, such as appealing spaces as natural homes, being out of reach from their natural enemies and     5    (find) plenty to eat. So some animals can adapt to cities, who are more intelligent than their wild cousins and can find a good     6    (vary)of food to eat.

However, some birds that can’t adjust     7     cities think of the city as a dangerous place.     8       (able) to distinguish between blue sky and glass, they might crash into windows, or change their     9     (migrate) routes because of the high­rise buildings. From above, we should learn to better understand and appreciate our wild neighbours. Their entering our cities is a means of their     10     (survive).
