We have recently heard some interesting ways that 5G technology might change our lives in the future. 5G promises internet speeds between 50 to 100 times faster than 4G systems. Such improvements are sure to be popular with 5G users worldwide. While it is said to start only in some few areas of the United States this year, much of the rest of the world is not expected to receive this service until 2023.
One project in Britain, though, is already testing the superfast technology, but not on humans.
Instead, the experimental subjects (实验对象) are unlike the group of internet users — cows. The system connects the animals to 5G in an effort to automate (使自动化) the milking process.
The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems. Testing areas were set up at farms in three rural areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G-connected devices (设备) that link up to a robotic milking system. The system uses sensors (传感器) and machine learning to fully automate the process.
System designers say technology takes over after a cow is ready to be milked and walks towards an automatic gate. The device is designed to recognize each cow. It then positions devices to the right body position for milking. During the process, machines offer food for the cow as a reward.
One of the test areas is in the town of Shepton Mallet in southwest England. There, about 50 of the farm’s l80 cows are fitted with 5G smart collars (智能项圈) in ear sensors. Project officials say the devices do not harm the cows and the sensors help farmers immediately find any problems or health concerns.
Duncan Forbes, the project leader, told Reuters that so far, he thinks the project shows the farm’s180 cow operations can be greatly improved with 5G technology.
Forbes added that the experiment provides strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future “not just on farms, but in rural communities right across the country.”

【推荐2】The Art of Slow Reading
If you are reading this article in print, chances are that you will only get through half of what I have written. And if you are reading this online, you may not even finish a fifth.
So are we getting stupider? Actually, our online habits are damaging the mental power we need to process and understand textual information. Round-the-clock news makes us read from one article to the next without necessarily engaging fully with any of the content. Our reading is frequently interrupted by the noise of the latest email and we are now absorbing short bursts of words on Twitter and Facebook more regularly than longer texts.
A.The Internet is probably part of the problem. |
B.Now some campaigns are advocating slow reading. |
C.These are the two findings from the recent research projects. |
D.But if you just occasionally want to read more slowly, help is at hand. |
E.Some of them have suggested turning their computers off for one day a week. |
F.Slow reading can help connect a reader to neighborhood and become popular. |
G.Because of the Internet, we have become very good at collecting information. |

MySpace is a place that allows you to broadcast your own stories and personal information to as many people as you like. Founded in 2003, it is a big source of information for and about American kids.
Teenagers and their parents feel very differently about it. Teens are rushing to join the site, not sharing their parents’ worries. It signals yet another generation gap in the digital era.
For teenagers, it is reliable network to keep in touch with their friends. They will often list their surnames, birthdays, after-school jobs, school clubs, hobbies and other personal information. “MySpace is an easy way to reach just about everyone. I don’t have all the phone numbers of my acquaintances. But if I want to get in touch with one of them, I could just leave them a message on MySpace,” said Abby Van Wassen. She is a 16-year-old student at Woodland Hills High of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Parents, on the other hand, are seriously concerned about the security problems of MySpace. “Every time we hold a parents meeting, the first question is always about MySpace,” said Kent Gates, who travels the country doing Internet safety seminars (研讨会). The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children has received at least 288 MySpace-related complaints, according to Mary Beth Buchanan, a lawyer in Pittsburgh.
“Your profile on MySpace shows all your personal information to anyone on the Web. And MySpace even lists this information by birthplace and age. It’s like a free checklist for troublemakers and it endangers children,” Buchanan said.

The survey, conducted by the National Literacy Trust ahead of World Book Day last Thursday, also showed a worrying picture of growing inequality.
10% of 3,000 parents interviewed across the UK said they were too stressed to read to their child because of economic pressures. And the percentage doubled among those who described themselves as struggling with financial problems. However, the sales data for the last year, released by an organization called Nielsen BookScan, showed a 15% increase in the overall number of children’s books sold compared with 2019. If poorer families are spending less of the money invested in children’s reading, it follows that richer families must be investing more.
Therefore, what is to be done? At a time of financial stress, libraries have a key role to play. A positive sign that they are doing so came with borrowing figures for last year. Libraries are where children of all ages go to choose books for themselves, different from bookshops, which is always influenced by parents’ budgets and tastes.
This is why the libraries are such an important part of the reading ecology. However, libraries have long been in the frontline (前线) of cuts to public services, especially libraries in schools. While prisons in the UK have libraries, primary schools are not. The result, according to one survey, is that 14% of kids have no library space at all. This disadvantage is more serious in the north of England, where children’s reading scores are lower.
As Children’s Prize winner in 2021, the author Cressida Cowell wrote an open letter to the prime minister, Boris Johnson, calling for an annual investment of £100 million a year in primary school libraries. Her demand should be taken seriously, as it directly meets the needs of children most badly affected by the cost of living crisis.
1. Which statement does the author probably agree with?A.Families with financial problems are on the increase. |
B.Family income influences children’s chance of reading. |
C.Children are not willing to read because of study pressure. |
D.Some UK parents can’t afford the time to read books for children. |

Recovery efforts in the wild began in 1987 on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. In a ground-breaking successful experiment, eight captive (圈养的) wolves were released this year into North Carolina, eventually growing into a population over 100, reaching a peak of around 120 wolves in 2012. But illegal hunting and management changes by the Fish and Wildlife Service resulted in their numbers plummeting.
In the spring, conservationists celebrated a small bit of good news when four captive-born pups (幼兽) were placed into a cave and successfully adopted by a wild red wolf mother. Meanwhile, another four adults were released into the wild. The pups are thought to be still alive and healthy. But the adults didn’t go well. In the months after release, three were struck by cars and killed, and the fourth was fatally shot on private land.
To boost the population after these deaths, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in November that it planned to release nine adult red wolves into their recovery area this winter, land within and surrounding two wildlife reserves.
The Service also recently announced it would withdraw a 2018 proposal to shrink (缩小) the red wolves’ protected area in North Carolina by 90 percent, after a lawsuit accused the agency of going against the Endangered Species Act. Ron Sutherland of the Wildlands Network says it’s crucial that the agency has abandoned this wrong-headed proposal. And yet the situation now is even more urgent than it was in 2018 — this should launch the conservation community in the U. S. into crisis mode to save this species and bring it back from the extinction.

Zhu Yiwei, 17, from Anhui province, wanted his grandfather to have access to this convenience, so he bought him a new phone as a gift. But his grandfather still uses the phone just for calling and messaging. “He said other functions make him confused, ”said Zhu.
This is a common problem faced by the elderly in the digital age.
Although China already has more than 900 million internet users, among them, those aged 60 and above make up just 6.7 percent, according to the Statistical Report on Internet Development.
Even though the elderly have access to the internet, they mainly do it for communication and information acquisition(获取),according to a survey by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Other services are still strange to them. That’s why elderly people are sometimes called “digital refugees(难民)”.
For example, since the COVID-19 pandemic, people are often asked to show a green health code on their phone to get into public places. But most elderly people don't use smartphones. Even if they have one, many don't know how to operate it, People's Daily noted.
“We have made a lifelong contribution to society, but now we feel abandoned by it,”a 75-year-old Beijing resident surnamed Bai told the Global Times.
For the elderly, one way of mastering digital technology is to learn from younger family members. However, not all of these younger people have the patience or time to teach the elderly. In addition, aging results in many physical problems, such as weak eyesight and bad memory. This makes it harder to use smartphones.
The government and other organizations in China are trying to help. See Young, a Beijing-based NGO, aims to help China's elderly use mobile services. Student volunteers have been providing free computer and smartphone training for elderly people in over 200 communities across the country.
Zhao Jingchuan, 17, from Xi'an Gaoxin No 1 High School, and his team members also tried to help. This year, their draft proposal(草拟提案)was brought to the two sessions. They suggested more ways to help introduce the technology to the older generation, including sending manuals(手册),offering technical support, and cybersecurity(网络安全)education.

Mom worked hard at her job from morning till evening — but not before sending us off to school early with our not-so-heavy bags and our lunch boxes with simple, wholesome meals. Even though we went through tough times, providing my sister and I with the best possible education remained a big priority for our mother. Education before everything else was her belief, even though it meant most of her hard-earned money was spent paying our school fees. We were always careful and economical, but somehow we never felt a sense of deprivation (贫困) in our lives.
Life for us moved at this easy, contented pace until, of course, our birthdays approached. Honestly, I did not look forward to the gifts as much as I did sharing Moms handmade chocolates, wrapped (被包裹) in shiny, colorful paper, with my classmates. Fifteen minutes before lunch, our teacher would allow us to distribute the candy. And out came the box from its hiding place under my books-and with a smile on my face and a happy heart, I would hand over two chocolates each to my friends. Then, I would rush out of the room just to enjoy the pleasure of hearing them open up the wrappers and the mouth-watering chocolates in pure delight. They would then ask me if there were a few more until I ran out of these treats entirely. Year after year, I followed the same ritual (仪式) — and it pleased me to no end each time I heard my friends say that these chocolates were unlike any they had ever tasted.
The years passed by, and as our kids grew up, they too gifted chocolates to their friends at school on their birthdays. However, none of the chocolates I offered to my child could match what Mom always had for us. Until the year Mom visited us on my child’s birthday and brought along her famous chocolates. After so many years, I finally realized the secret of the chocolate’s evergreen taste: sugar and peanuts cooked to perfection and filled with motherly affection and love in wrappers saved over months. Indeed, the best birthday treat I had ever tasted!

Greenhouse gases can stay in the environment for hundreds, even thousands of years and governments have been too slow to react-- you can't reverse the effects from one day to the next. Worst case scenario(情形)? As northern countries warm up, insects will migrate there bringing a chain of deadly illness such as malaria (疟疾) and plagues. The probability of more frequent and stronger hurricanes will increase, with devastating consequences—not least of which will be the huge damage- repair costs, to say nothing of the loss of lives. It’s high time we took preventative action—before it’s too late!
Nick, London
People go on about climate change but for me, the worst offender is child labour. It’s unthinkable that it still persists in this day and age! Working in a sweatshop to produce a trendy pair of trainers for some westerns, or cheap clothing, is no kind of life for a young person. The statistics speak for themselves: seventy-three million ten-to fourteen year-olds form part of the workforce worldwide—in countries such as Mali that’s fifty-four percent of children in that age group, in India it’s forty-one percent of the same age group. We need more pressure groups to campaign against importing goods made by underage workers and to support organizations such as Fairtrade that promote ethical trade and fair wages for adults.
Maria, Rome
World population has already passed the seven billion mark and it’s growing increasingly fast. Currently over 925 million people—that’s almost one in seven—have an insufficiently daily diet(less than 2100 calories a day) and this figure is going up by ten million a year! The worst-hit countries are poverty-stricken ones such as those in west Africa, Haiti and Mongolia, but conflict in places such as Sudan or Iraq has also caused widespread starvation. If this is happening when the world actually produces enough food to feed everyone (as it does presently) what will happen in the near future? We need a long-term solution—and fast.

Hamburg is a very big shopping city. Apart from H&M, New Yorker and Mango, I have found a New Look and a new Topshop have recently just opened. These shops are quite popular shops in the UK and sell clothes which are always considered as very "fashionable".
Another thing I am really struggling with, as well as trying to be fashionable, I am trying to find the right clothes for the weather. I have found in Hamburg one minute it is nice and sunny but the next minute it is throwing it down with rain! One day it might start off really rainy and cold but by lunch time it is sunny and really hot, so wearing a coat is not practical.
In general, however, I think it has also got cold here very quickly and it already feels like the winter that I am used to. I frequently go out in my winter coat, hat, gloves and scarf while many other people are still only wearing jeans or leather jackets. I don't understand how they do it as I am always freezing. Is it better to blend(使混合)in with fashion or be warm? I think I would rather be warm and maybe look like a bit of a banana in a huge coat rather than be shivering all day.
What do you think? Clearly I am missing something here as I seem to be the only one struggling over these fashion decisions.

According to BBC, new satellite images released by the European Space Agency showed that the levels of air pollutants and greenhouse gases have "fallen sharply" in major cities in Europe and the United Stated ever since the lockdown started.
This is a great example of how the world can change overnight as soon as people change their behavior—especially after recent discoveries in Antarctica. An international team of 89 scientists found that the ice in Greenland and Antarctica was melting six times faster in the 2010s than it was in the 1990s. And in February Argentina's Marambio research station in Antarctica recorded a record high temperature of 20.75℃ in the continent.
So what exactly will happen if the temperature keeps rising and the ice keeps melting? A third study might give you an idea. A team of scientists drilled a hole into the seafloor in west Antarctica and obtained material from underground, in which they found traces of roots, spores and pollen— typical products of a rainforest — that dated back to 90 million years ago. In other words, Antarctica was very likely a rainforest back when the dinosaurs walked on Earth. But given the fact that the South Pole has four months of darkness during winter — even millions of years ago—scientists believe that the rainforest could only exit if the greenhouse gas concentration were extremely high back then to keep the continent warm when there was little or no sunlight. "We didn't know that this Cretaceous greenhouse climate was that extreme," Johann Klages of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany and a co﹣author of the research told the Guardian. "It shows us what carbon dioxide is able to do. "
Ice or no ice, Antarctica will be—and has always been fine with extreme changes. The human world, however, may not be. Now, during the coronavirus lockdown, we've seen the changes resulting from less human activity. Hopefully, we'll hold on to those changes—not for Antarctica or the planet, but for ourselves.
