Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”

“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into mischief(trouble). Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me. ”

“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

It was the final day of our holiday: I’d gone snowboarding with my little brother and what we lacked in skill we made up for in enthusiasm, catching the first ski lift in the morning and the last lift in the afternoon. That day, fresh snow had been falling and we were in high spirits. We stopped near the top of an off-piste section (非滑雪场区域) that went through forests. I’d done this route a few times before and, as I was faster and more experienced, I let my brother disappear into the trees ahead, figuring I would soon catch up.

I began to pick up speed when I was suddenly thrown off balance. I didn’t fall but I lost control of the board. I was unable to turn, instead going in a straight line, gathering speed. Just as I was regaining control, I smashed (猛撞) into the trunk of a large tree.

It was like hitting a concrete pillar (柱子). I didn’t lose consciousness but the pain was felt instantly and overwhelming. I knew pretty much immediately that my back was broken and quickly realised the situation could get very serious. I was off-piste, so nobody would be coming past. There was no phone signal. My brother knew I was on the mountain, but we often lost each other and would just meet at the bottom, so he might not worry for some time. Even if he did, he had no way of knowing where I was. It was snowing and cold. I figured if I waited, I would probably be rescued, eventually. But the chance of freezing to death before that happened was too high for me to risk staying put.

I tried to stand but collapsed and almost blacked out with pain before I got halfway up.

Walking was not an option. Crawling was too slow and painful. I had another idea: I managed to get the board unclipped (松开) from my feet and manoeuvred (移动) it under my stomach so I was lying on it. I faced down the mountain and, using the board as a luge (小雪橇), I started to drag and slide my body down the steep, tree-lined slope (斜坡). It was sharp but the snow was quite deep so I could use my arms to stop myself sliding out of control. I descended (下降) at a slow jogging pace, trying to slow myself as much as possible.

Taking my seat on the sidelines, I delightedly watched my daughter, Skyla, ten, perfectly balance on the hands of her teammates in mid-air. From time to time, Skyla looked down at me, excitement written all over her face.

Skyla had joined a cheerleading team three months earlier, and I loved watching her practice, like a pretty butterfly dancing in the wind. “She’s so confident,” I thought. “But as to me, things are different. There’s no way I could do that.”

A few weeks later, one morning, I was watching the training with my fellow cheer mums, chatting about how inspiring our daughters were, when one of the mums turned to me and asked, “How about we give it a go?”

As a 36-year-old mum, I was a little worried at first. The only sport I had done was tennis, but soon I realized it might be a good opportunity. We decided to call ourselves Cheer N Dance. Stepping on the mat for our first training session, I was extremely nervous, and I could feel my heart beating clearly. As I waited for the music to begin, I started to doubt myself, “I’m not as young and flexible as I used to be. What if I always forget the moves or make mistakes?” But as I moved to the rhythm of the music, a smile spread across my face.

After three months, the competition day finally arrived. With me taking my place on the mat, my heart was beating out of my chest. Amazingly, when the music started, my fear faded and I was overcome with a rush of excitement. Everything went smoothly. Once we finished, we rushed off stage, our faces beaming with pride.

As the judges announced, “Taking home the gold medal is Cheer N Dance!” I met eyes with Skyla and my husband, Brett. Waving and cheering, they were so excited for me!

Once or twice a little leaf was heard to cry and sigh, as leaves often do when a gentle wind is blowing. And the branch asked, "What is the matter, little leaf?”

“The wind,” said the leaf, “just told me that one day it would pull me off, and throw me on the ground and die.”

The little leaf told the branch, and the branch told the tree. When the tree heard it, it sent word back to the little leaf.

“Do not be afraid? little leaf,” it said, “Hold on tight, and you shall not go off until you are ready.”

So the leaf stopped sighing, and went on singing and dancing in the wind. It grew all the spring and summer. In autumn the leaf grew very beautiful.

One day, the leaf noticed a strange thing:the branch had lost all its colors. So it asked, “O branch! Why are you in dark clothes while I have dressed up in beautiful clothes?”

“Because your work is now over and you are getting ready for the coming holiday. But I must put on my working clothes for the next year,” said the branch, “for my work is not yet done.”
