Advertising is an audio or visual form of marketing communication that employs an openly sponsored, non-personal message to promote or sell a product, a service or an idea. Sponsors of advertising are often businessmen who wish to promote their products or services. Advertising is different from public relations since an advertiser usually pays for and has control over the message. It is different from personal selling since the message is non-personal, i.e. not directed to a particular individual.
Advertising is communicated through various mass media, including old media such as newspapers, magazines, television, radio, outdoor advertising or direct mail; or new media such as search results, blogs, websites or text messages. The actual presentation of the message in a medium is referred to as an advertisement or “ad”.
Commercial ads often seek to increase consumption of products or services through “branding”, which associates a product name or image with certain qualities in the minds of consumers. Noncommercial advertisers who spend money in advertising items other than a consumer product or service include political parties, interest groups, religious organizations and governmental agencies. Non-profit organizations may use free modes of persuasion, such as a public service announcement. Advertising may also be used to reassure employees or shareholders that the company is successful.
Modern advertising was created with the techniques, with tobacco advertising in the 1920s.The most significant example was the campaigns of Edward Bernays, considered the founder of modern“Madison Avenue” advertising.
In 2015, the world spent an estimate of $ 529.43 billion on advertising. Its projected distribution for 2017 is 40.4% on TV,33.3% on digital,9% on newspapers,6.9% on magazines,5.8% on outdoor activities and 4.3% on radio. Internationally , the largest “big four” advertising conglomerates are IPG, Omnicom, Publicis Groupe, and WPP.

However, local leaders voted recently to permit individual cities to remove the birds from unwanted areas. Raquel Regalado, a local government leader, represents parts of the cities of Miami and Coral Gables where people want permission to remove the birds. “Mating season is when we get the most complaints. They get very aggressive, ” said Regalado. She added birds would do things like damage cars with their beaks.
About two years ago, people who live in the Miami neighborhood asked city leaders to remove a large group of peacocks. The birds caused damage and left piles of waste in the streets. They called the birds “filthy and dirty”.
But others liked seeing the unusual birds and thought it made their neighborhood look different in a good way. They don’t want to see the birds harmed. Danielle Cohen Higgins, a local woman, said, “we learn to live with these peacocks and they are part of the community.”
Peacocks are not native to South Florida. They originally come from Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia as well as Africa. The birds have been protected from killing or capturing in South Florida for about 20 years. The rule was put in place because people in the area wanted to save a group of peacocks. But now the birds live freely in parts of Florida and they are not uncommon. It is hard to find zoos that want them while state laws prevent non-native species like peacocks from being released in the wild. If will accept the birds, they might have to be killed in a process known as euthanasia (安乐死).
Regalado said the problem now will be to decide where to put the peacocks. “This really is not about killing,” she said. “This is about moving. ”

In a nationwide survey of Canadian youth, over half of those who had ever consumed an energy drink had reported experiencing a negative health event. Currently, Canadian legislation is meant to prohibit energy drinks from being marketed to children and energy drinks are not recommended to be used by people participating in sporting activities.
"Most risk assessments to date have used coffee as a reference for estimating the health effects of energy drinks. However, it is clear that these products cause a greater health risk," said David Hammond, a Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Waterloo. "The health effects from energy drinks could be due to the different ingredients than coffee, or the ways in which they consumed, including with alcohol or during physical activity. Regardless, the findings suggest a need to increase monitoring of health effects from these products."
In conducting the study, the researchers surveyed 2,055 young Canadians aged 12 to 24. Of those who had reported consuming energy drinks at some point in their lives, 55.4 percent reported experiencing a negative health event. Of those reporting negative health events, 24.7 percent reported experiencing a fast heartbeat, 24.1 percent reported difficulty sleeping and 18.3 percent reported experiencing headaches.
"The number of health effects observed in our study suggests that more should be done to restrict consumption among children and youth," said Hammond. "At the moment, there are no restrictions on children purchasing energy drinks, and they are marketed at the point-of-sale in grocery stores, as well as advertising that targets children."

【推荐3】How to make a resume?
1.Format your text.
The first thing that a possible employer will see on your resume is the text. For that reason, it is very important that you make the right first impression. Choose a professional font in size 11 or 12. Times New Roman is the classic serif font(衬线字体), while Arial and Calibri are two of the better choices for sans-serif(无衬线字体). Even though sans serif fonts are more popular for resume, Yahoo cites Helvetica as the best font to use for your resumé.
Many individuals find that Times New Roman is a little hard to read on a screen. If you are emailing your resume, consider using Georgia instead for a more readable serif font.
You can use multiple fonts for different parts of your resume, but try to limit it to two. Instead of changing between fonts, try emboldening or italicizing specific selections of text instead.
The font size for your header and the introduction to a section may 14 or 16, but otherwise, you should choose 11 or 12.
Your text should always be printed in solid black ink. Make sure to deactivate any hyperlinks (like to your email, address, and phone number) so that they don’t print in blue or another non-black color.
2. Set up the page.
Your page should have one-inch margins all the way around with 1.5 or 2 point line spacing. The body of your resume will be aligned to the left and your header should be centered at the top of your page.
3. Create your heading.
This is the section at the top of your resume which gives your contact information including your name, address, email, and phone number. Your name should be in a slightly larger size - either 14 or 16 point font. List your home and cell phone numbers.
4. Decide on a layout.
There are three general formats for creating a resume: chronological, functional, or combination. Your work history and the type of job you are applying for will determine the layout style you should use.
Chronological resumes are used for showing a steady growth in a particular career field. These are best used for someone applying for a job within their career-path to show an increase of responsibility over time.
Functional resumes are focused on skills and experience rather than job history. These are best used for someone who may have holes in their work history or who have gained experience from being self-employed for a time.
Combination resumes are, as it sounds, a combination of both a chronological and a functional resume. These are used to show off specific skills and how they were acquired. If you have developed a specific skill set from working in a variety of related fields, then this is the best resume option for you.
1. Which font does the author suggest considering the readability of the resume when checked online?A.Georgia | B.Times New Roman |
C.Calibri | D.Helvetica |
A.arranged according to how important each item is |
B.arranged according to when things happened or were made |
C.be specific and concrete in the introduction of something |
D.state various items in a detailed and separate way |
A.the more colorful your resume is, the more appealing it will be |
B.there is no need to tell employers where you obtain your specific skills |
C.your name should be a little bit larger in size, aligned to the left |
D.blue or other strange colors will appear on your printed resume if hyperlinks are activated |

Luckily, preuniversity students from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in Moscow have created sneakers that can give directions, count a person's steps and measure the calories burned. The smart sneakers can lead users to their destination. The idea is simple. When moving towards a turn, the right or left shoe vibrates(震动)according to the directions.
“We've developed a facility that goes well with a special mobile app via Bluetooth and receives information about a route. The facility performs all the necessary functions without affecting walking and can be joined to the laces(鞋带)of ordinary sneakers. The user only needs to run the app once, and then puts the phone away and enjoys the walk.In addition to navigation, the system can also keep track of the distance traveled. This information can be found in the mobile app,”said Alexander Pinchuk and Maxim Levkin, the authors of the project.
The team plans to continue developing the project because the smart clothing market is growing every year.According to the creators,it is likely that in a few years, smart sneakers will become popular like smart watches.
This is not the first original project of preuniversity students from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI Valentin Klimov, deputy director of the Institute of Cyber Intelligent Systems of MEPhI,says,“Our preuniversity students have created rather original projects before. For example, last year, our students developed a useful system for people with poor eyesight and won an international children's competition;then they won the Junior competition and took part in the largest international competition:Intel ISEF.Now these guys are our first year students, and this shows the high level of our applicants.”

When the police asked a person questions important to a criminal case, a fast heartbeat or sweaty hands might make a nervous truth-teller appear to be lying. And, an experienced liar might be able to control those signs and avoid suspicion (怀疑).
Our eyes look at a familiar face differently than they look at an unfamiliar one. When people look at unfamiliar faces, their eyes usually move from one feature, like the shape of the nose, to other features. Their eyes stop quickly as they try to identify the unknown person. When looking at a familiar face, people usually direct their attention to just a few features. But the researchers want to know if people could change those when they are hiding the truth.
The researchers showed 48 students pictures of both strangers and professors they knew. They asked all of the students to try to appear honest while they were lying about recognizing familiar faces. The researchers told some students to stop in the same areas when they were looking at both familiar and unfamiliar faces. Their eyes would start on the person’s forehead. Next, they looked at each eye, and then moved from one ear to the other, then down to the nose, mouth and chin.
In most cases, the students who tried to hide their recognition were not able to do so. When they looked at a familiar face, their eyes still had fewer stops in the inner parts of the face. Alisa Millen, a psychology researcher at the University of Stirling, said hiding markers for facial recognition in eye movements is difficult, especially if you know that person well. She added the more the students tried to hide recognition of a face, the more obvious it was. Millen hopes that the findings can someday be used in law enforcement (执法). She believes such knowledge could help investigators have a clearer understanding of who is connected to whom in a criminal case.

However, as with most developments in art and technology, there isn't an exact break between when the industry stopped using black and white films and when it started using color films. On top of that, film fans know that some filmmakers continue to choose to shoot their films in black and white decades after color films became the standard. Typical examples include oung Frankenstein (1974), Raging Bull (1980), Schindler’s List (1993), and The Artist (2011).
An often-repeated but incorrect fact is that 1939's The Wizard of Oz is the first full-color movie. This misconception probably comes from the fact that the film makes great symbolic use of brilliant color film after the first scene is shown in black and white. However, color movies were being created more than 35 years before The Wizard of Oz!
One of the most important developments in color films was Kinemacolor, created by Englishman George Albert Smith in 1906. Kinemacolor movies projected film through red and green filters (过滤器) to reproduce the actual colors used in the film. The first film to use the Kinemacolor process was Smith 's 1908 travelogue—A Visit to the Seaside. Kinemacolor was the most popular in its native UK, but the cost of installing (安装) the necessary equipment put many theaters off. After years of technical development, by the late 1950s, most Hollywood productions were being shot in color. Then, the color film finally became the standard in the filming industry.
However, the black and white film still makes its appearance. True, the black and white film has left a long-lasting impact on filming. Still, audiences today always tend to associate the black and white film with classic Hollywood storytelling and also admire the bright colors of early color movies.

A study has found that drinking coffee first can have a negative effect on blood sugar control - a risk factor for diabetes and heart disease.
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee—subjectively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee,” said Professor James Betts, at the University of Bath in the UK.
For their study, researchers at the University of Bath got 29 healthy men and women to take part in three different overnight experiments, with at least a week between them.
In one, the participants had a normal night’s sleep, roughly from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and were asked to consume a sugary drink on waking in the morning. They then experienced an interrupted night’s sleep, where the researchers woke them every hour for five minutes by sending them text messages to which they had to respond — and upon waking were given the same sugary drink.
On another night, participants experienced the same sleep interruption, but this time were first given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.
They found that one night of interrupted sleep did not worsen the participants’ blood sugar and insulin responses when compared to the normal night’s sleep—although previous research suggested that losing many hours of sleep or many nights of poor sleep could have a negative effect. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast actually increased the blood sugar response by around 50% — suggesting that relying on coffee after a bad night to stop feeling sleepy could limit your body’s ability to tolerate the sugar in your breakfast.
1. What was unchanged in the three experiments?A.The sugary drink. | B.The blood sugar response. |
