The robot band was founded in 2018. The band name “Moja” is from Mohism, one of many schools of thought before the Qin Dynasty. It is made up of three robot musicians, Yuheng, Yaoguang and Kaiyang, named after three stars. They played three kinds of traditional Chinese instruments: the bamboo flute (长笛), Chinese harp (竖琴) and paigu (牌鼓), a set of Chinese drums, at the concert. The team behind the band include students, teachers and graduates from Tsinghua University. They have professional backgrounds such as computing, mechanical (机械的) engineering and music composition (作曲).
The team’s chief scientist Mi Haipeng is an associate professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tsinghua. He took part in the research and development of a robot rock band when he studied in Japan. That experience inspired his dream to make a Chinese robot band.
Mi said traditional Chinese instruments’ sound and playing techniques are different from those of Western musical instruments. The focus is more on the artistic conception (概念) and expression of the players. This kind of non-quantitative (非定量的) control brings challenges to Moja robot development. “In our research, we continuously explore how to solve these problems so that the robots can maintain the Chinese traditional characteristics when playing music,” he added.
Mi said the music pieces in the concert were specially made for the robots to play. The robots’ stage clothes were made with 3D-printing technology. He added that there are more performance plans for Moja in the future, introducing new music pieces. The team, meanwhile, would improve the musical expression of the robots.

He has both organized and performed shows that have pushed barriers, with motion sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), live-generated 3D visuals and virtual reality among the technological advancements used to unlock new possibilities of music and performances.
Kanga’s approach to employing cutting-edge technology was first informed by the relative limitations of his chosen instrument. “The piano is a very accurate technology,” he says. “From the early 20th century till now it hasn’t really changed at all. It’s an amazing instrument, but it does have certain limitations in terms of the types of sound you can create.”
One of the early works is Steel on Bone, composed by Kanga himself. He performs the piece using MiMU multi-sensor gloves. “I can put up one finger, and that’ll produce a particular sound,” Kanga explains. “And then I can control that sound just by moving my wrist through the air — I can do that with lots of different gestures.”
“For Steel on Bone, I’m actually playing inside the piano with these steel knitting (编织) needles, and getting all these interesting effects on the strings. Then I’m using samples of them. Sometimes I’m using live delays and operating them. The sound can change depending on how my hands are moving. It allows me to make a very theatrical piece, and people can see this immediate connection between how I’m moving — these very big, almost conductor-like gestures through the air — and the way the sound is changing,” said Kanga.
This is just the start, and Kanga goes on to be enthused with the use of motion sensors to make music, the possibilities that AI offers composers as a tool, and how virtual reality could transform performances and more.
1. What do technological advancements do for music and performances?A.Remove music barriers. |
B.Bring new performance forms. |

But at least, if you’re in France, someone may be playing the piano for you. But it won’t be performed by a paid musician, or even a street entertainer playing for coins. It will just be a random passer-by, jamming for the fun of it on one of the pianos that the national railroad company, S. N. C. F., has fixed in nearly 100 stations across France. They are free for anyone to play, and travelers from all walks of life have taken to doing just that.
Gares & Connexions, the S. N. C. F. division that manages its stations, rents the instruments from the producer, Yamaha: which maintains them and tunes them every month or two. The first one was set up in the Gare Montparnasse in Paris in 2012.
The music, mixed with the sounds of shouting passengers, screaming trains and rolling suitcases, gives French stations a special soundscape. The amateur musicians have included Irish soccer fans and even babies. In 2014, Gares & Connexions and Yamaha organized a nationwide contest called Your Turn to Play, asking participants to submit videos of themselves using one of the pianos. It drew nearly 900 entries.
Isn’t the railroad company taking a big chance? Apparently not: “None of the instruments has been vandalized to this day, or even merely damaged,” said Claire Foumon, a spokeswoman for Gares & Connexions. “They are shared and respected by all.”
So if you miss a train in Paris; Bordeaux or Marseille one day, perhaps someone will be playing a favorite piece that will ease your pain. Or perhaps you’ll sit down and play your annoyance away yourself.
1. Why did Gares & Connexions fix pianos in railway stations?A.To advertise Yamaha’s products. | B.To make stations more attractive. |
C.To let travelers have a relaxing trip. | D.To help street artists make a living. |
A.The contest has proved a hit. | B.The pianos are very popular. |
C.Railway stations are crowded. | D.Everyone can be an amateur musician. |

However, sometimes government leaders decide to move the capital from one city to another. Capital relocation has been done hundreds of times throughout history. The ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Chinese changed their capital frequently.
Some countries choose new capitals that are more easily defended in a time of invasion (侵略) or war. Some new capitals are planned and built in previously undeveloped areas to promote development. Countries sometimes change their capital because they expect some type of political, social, or economic benefit. They hope and expect that the new capitals will surely develop into cultural treasure and hopefully make the country a more stable place.
Here are capital relocations that have occurred in approximately the last few centuries.

To me, June 6, 1990 is a special day. My longawaited dream came true the minute your father cried, “A girl!” You, little daughter, are the link to our female line, the legacy of another woman’s pain and sacrifice 31 years ago.
Let me tell you about your Chinese grandmother. Somewhere in Hong Kong, in the late fifties, a young waitress found herself pregnant(怀孕) by a cook. She carried the baby to term, suffered to give it birth, and kept the little girl for the first three months of her life. I like to think that my mother — your grandmother — loved me and fought to raise me on her own, but the daily struggle was too hard. Worn down by the demands of the new baby and perhaps the constant threat of starvation, she made the painful decision to give away her girl so that both of us might have a chance for a better life.
Having a baby in her unmarried state would have brought shame on the family in China, so she probably kept my existence a secret. Once I was out of her life, it was as if I had never been born. And so you and your brother and I are the missing leaves on a family tree.
Do they ever wonder if we exist?
Before I was two, I was adopted by an Anglo couple. I grew like a wild weed and grasped all the opportunities they had to offer — books, music, education, church life and community activities. In a family of blueeyed blonds, though, I stood out like a sore thumb. Moody and impatient, burdened by fears that none of us realized resulted from my early years of need, I was not an easy child to love. My mother and I conflicted countless times over the years, but gradually came to see one another as real human beings with faults and talents. Lacking a mirror image in the mother who raised me, I had to seek my identity as a woman on my own. The Asian American community has helped me regain my double identity.
But part of me will always be missing: my beginnings, my personal history, all the delicate details that give a person her origin. Nevertheless, someone gave me a lucky name “Siu Wai”. “Siu” means “little”, and “Wai” means “clever”. Therefore, my baby name was “Clever little one”. Who chose those words? Who cared enough to note my arrival in the world?
I lost my Chinese name for 18 years. It was Americanized for convenience to “Sue”. But like an illfitting coat, it made me uncomfortable. I hated the name. But even more, I hated being Chinese. It took many years to become proud of my Asian origin and work up the courage to take back my birth name. That, plus a little knowledge of classroom Cantonese, is all the Chinese culture I have to offer you. Not white, certainly, but not really Asian, I try to pave the way between the two worlds and bridge the gap for you. Your name, “Shaoming”, is very much like mine — “Shao” means “little”. And “ming” is “bright”, as in a shining sun or moon. Whose lives will you brighten little Maya? Your past is more complete than mine and each day I cradle you in your babyhood, generously giving you the loving care I lacked for my first two years.
Sweet Maya, it doesn’t matter what you “become” later on. You have already fulfilled my wildest dreams.
I love you,
Mummy

The Air Force pilot took a photo of the moment Jennifer gave her rescuer the biggest hug that he would never forget. The photo touched hearts around the world. For Wilson, who was fighting an illness at the time,it was especially precious. He carried the photo with him everywhere to remind him of one of the most special moments in his life. The colourful fishier pinata(彩罐)had just been broken and the candy littered the ground. Both of their kids were too young to realise that they were sitting, and crawling around in a collection of wrapped sugar goodies. They were surrounded with edible(可食用的)goodies but had no clue!
Suddenly I saw the life metaphor(比喻). If we are the “babies” and the candy is “opportunity”, often we don’t recognise it because the opportunity comes wrapped as hard work. We may not give the wrapper the time of day, unless we realise that inside there’s a piece of delicious candy.
Every tree starts as a seed. Every person who becomes well-known was once someone nobody “knew”. So what changed for these people? Did the world suddenly wake up and find they have the potential to succeed? Of course not. These people worked for long periods of time before they saw any payoff.
It can be disheartening when you’re starting out. There’s a huge learning curve for almost everything. Just when you feel like you’re making rapid progress, you realise there’s more to learn. Every new door opens to a brand-new room, with another door at the end.
When I was in recovery from my eating disorder, there were many opportunities that I didn’t recognise as candy. At first, I didn’t see therapy(治疗)leading anywhere. It was only by going to therapy every week for a year that I was finally able to realise the opportunities. I had the opportunities to examine and adjust my thinking, and to challenge the negative mindsets I had about my life.
When I look back, I find that many of the opportunities that allowed positive growth didn’t always appear easy or fun. They often appeared as something that looked like hard work. But when we focus, consistently show up, and put in hard work, it will result in candy.

But after losing her trusty notebook and buying a new one, she had an inspiration. “It was blank,” says Marggraff, now 64. “What else could I fill it with?” Soon she was thinking about her childhood love of flying, and next thing she knew, she determined to register in flight school. “In my first class, all the students were single men half my age. I felt like a housemother attending a fraternity (兄弟会), but I loved it too much to walk away.” she says.
Marggraff earned her first pilot’s license in 2005. Six years and four additional licenses later, her addiction to being in the air changed into something grander: a desire to go to space. To move closer to her starry dreams, Marggraff got a part-time job as a mission support representative at Virgin Galactic, Richard Branson’s commercial space line. In that role, she attended space-related gatherings where she educated people about the future of universe voyages. Though space tourism isn’t quite a reality yet, Marggraff has already begun space training in expectation of being on one of Virgin’s early flights. “I’ve completed acceleration force exercises,” she says, “which require getting inside a machine, spinning around at 2,500 miles per hour, and trying not to black out.”
Marggraff’s training has meant more than getting her wings — it’s expanded her sense of what the future may hold. “It turns out I’m capable of much more than I imagined,” she says. “I used to think it’d be a miracle if I got my first license. Now I’ve completed nearly 1,000 hours of flight! I'm rotten in the kitchen and I burn anything I iron, but if you need someone to land a plane, call me.”
