Honestly speaking, they're one of those strange little destinations that I like to sniff out (寻找) everywhere I go, much as other travelers head toward clothing stores, libraries, cafes or galleries.
The biggest beauty of the grocery store-whether it's a huge supermarket or a tiny one-is that it gives you a glimpse into what local people buy to cook. This offers clues into their lifestyles and preferences, and into the agricultural and cooking practices of the country. I stare at the strange fruits and vegetables, the seafood, the cheese, the spices, the breads, and oh, the chocolate... always the chocolate!
Being an environmental person I am,I like paying attention to packaging, which can reflect their attitude towards environmental protection. Italy, for example, has a habit of requiring customers to bag their fruits and vegetables in plastic for weighing, while Sri Lanka leaves everything loose in bins. In Brazil , everything is prepackaged in a layer of plastic.
People in grocery stores tend to be friendlier. They smile, say hello, and sometimes ask questions, which can lead to great conversations. I had a further discussion with a teenaged cashier in Sri Lanka. He insisted that the one labeled “spicy” would be too hot for me, but I told him I was willing to risk it. He laughed and we ended up talking about my favorite Sri Lankan foods for ten minutes.
The financial savings extend to souvenirs, too. Whether it is ground spices for my mom or chocolates for my kids, the grocery store is the first place I look for unique gifts. It's interesting then to come home and look at one's own local grocery store through new eyes. What would a visitor think? What stands out, and what do the food displays say about us as a culture? You might be surprised by what you realize.
1. What's the greatest benefit of visiting the grocery store in another country?A.Buying cheaper groceries. | B.Making new friends. |
C.Seeing unknown food. | D.Learning local culture. |
A.To show their environmental awareness. |
B.To show the level of their wealth. |
C.To show their packaging differences. |
D.To show their special lifestyles. |
A.Sri Lankans tend to be much friendlier. |
B.Grocery stores are always social places. |

D.The cashier has good selling skills. |
A.Visiting grocery stores when you travel. |
B.Choosing souvenirs about various cultures. |
C.Knowing the grocery culture before you travel. |

Sunhats, backpacks, sneakers and trekking poles—these are the day-to-day must-haves of the family. This East-meets-West couple started traveling while their younger son was still a baby in 2003. Most of their trips are far from the hot spots recommended by travel guidebooks—heritage study in the Mongolian deserts, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb of three English summits and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.
“Real travel may be hard, uncertain, uncomfortable, but there’s a feel-good factor when you pass a test of some kind,” Lindesay wrote in the family’s newly published travel memoir Pages of Discovery.
Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but that experience of the world outside, in distant lands, with different languages, scripts, political structures, and religious beliefs, is the real testing ground.
Children in this international family did not have the same pressure to perform on school tests, but they had “homework” on the road. Wu asked her sons to write travel diaries, collect tickets, draw maps and summarize travel tips. She says such habits, though they might not directly improve test scores, will pay dividends in later life.
These experiences certainly shaped their sons’ characters and influenced their chosen study at university. One read world history, the other international relations. The two brothers also share an interest in historical monuments, and the Great Wall in particular. They are now planning to follow in their father’s footsteps with a new 4,500-km hike on the Great Wall.
“My parents view the world as a big classroom, and my brother and I are the biggest beneficiaries,” Jimmy says.
1. Which of the following best describes their trips across the world?A.Complicated and dangerous. | B.Unique yet stressful. |
C.Challenging yet educational. | D.Entertaining and rewarding. |

C.They require their sons to follow their career path. |
D.They don’t expect their sons to perform well on school tests. |
A.Bring advantages. | B.Pay a price. |
C.Improve scores. | D.Make mistakes. |
A.Roads were made for journeys not destination. |
B.No road is long with good company. |
C.A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. |

Back in 2020, Caitlin began to take part in a service program through her school that encourages students to volunteer during their free time. This inspired her whole family to volunteer. They bought a couple of Volunteer Kits (装备箱) and packed healthy snack packs in their home for people suffering during the pandemic (疫情). Over the course of a year, Caitlin took the challenge to raise enough money to buy snack packs for the community! But Caitlin didn’t stop there. Now her mom, Leigh, joined her at MATTER.
Caitlin explained why she was so devoted to helping people. “I think it’s really important to volunteer and give back to your community, especially when you’re offering people food, which is such an important need.” And what do Caitlin’s friends think of her passion for helping others? “My friends think it’s really cool that I have such a big commitment (奉献) to this. A couple of them are interested in volunteering next year because they’re inspired by what I’m doing at MATTER. It makes me feel good to know that others want to volunteer because I’m doing it.”
During this National Volunteer Month, we want to thank Caitlin and all of our devoted volunteers who selflessly give their time and energy to support MATTER’s mission. We know each of you has an inspiring volunteer story to tell and because of your efforts, we are able to help people launch projects that improve communities here at home and around the world. Reading these letters brought me chuckles (轻声笑)and then tears as they woke old memories of my mother’s ninety-second year. She was seriously ill that autumn. And I watched, powerless.
A decade before, I helped her break out" of the nursing home. It was a fine place with a caring staff. But Mom didn't want skilled care: she wanted to live on her own and just needed some assistance to do so. Being in a more restrictive environment than necessary was bad for her condition. The risk paid off, and I was rewarded by seeing my mother once again enjoying her life.
Ten years later, Mom's health declined, and my care-giving duties increased. One evening, for some unexplainable reason, I invited my mother to go toilet papering!
This outing would push my mother to her physical limits. Was I making a mistake? Secretly we went to my brother's home. In his backyard, I handed Mom a roll of toilet paper. Without hesitation she shot it skyward...
Mom papered a dozen trees in four family yards that unforgettable evening. The day after our big adventure, Mom and I sent a card to each of our victim, signed “From your decorators". We laughed all the way home from the post office, like two schoolgirls.
My mother's last year was marked by physical decline. However, we shared some simple fun each day. Those light-hearted moments were like a salve (慰藉),and they are the ones I'll always remember. Toilet papering has taught us that play is powerful medicine!

Introduction
A lot of crime is against bicycles. About 150, 000 bicycles are stolen every year and most are never found. You can prevent this happening by following a few careful steps.
Basic Security
Do not leave your bicycle in out-of-the-way places. Always lock your bicycle when youleave. Secure it to lampposts or trees. Take off smaller parts and take them with you,for example lights and saddlesleave(车座).
Locks
Get a good lock. There are many different types in the shops. Buy one that has been tested against attack. Ask for a recommendation from a bike shop.
Marking
Security marking your bike can act as a deterrent to a thief. It can also help the police find your bicycle. It should be clearly written and include your postcode and your house or flat number. This will provide a simple way to identify your bicycle.
Registration (登记)
There are a number of security companies who will help mark your bicycle for you. They will then put your registration number and personal details on their computer database. Then if your bicycle is found it will be easy to contact you. -
Finally
Keep a record of the bicycle yourself: its maker, model and registration number. You can even take a photograph of it. This will prove the bicycle belongs to you.
