Chinese kung fu is one of the earliest and longestlasting sports that use both muscle and brain. Over its long history it has developed as a unique combination of exercise, practical selfdefense, selfdiscipline and art.

It is estimated that Chinese kung fu can date back to primitive society. At that time, people used sticks to fight wild beasts. Gradually, they accumulated a great deal of selfdefense experience. When the Shang Dynasty began, hunting was considered an important part of kung fu training.

During the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, martial arts(武术) evolved to become a kind of dancing. Usually, the dancing of martial arts was used to train soldiers and inspire their morale(士气). At the same time, the skill and technology of sword making as well as sword ceremonies developed rapidly.

Starting from the Tang Dynasty, a kung fu examination was proposed and introduced. Excellent candidates would receive titles and awards through the examination, largely promoting the development of martial arts. By then, martial arts had evolved to become an art form and an independent genre. Kung fu was gradually introduced to many countries in Southeast Asia. Today, kung fu is honored as the ancestor of kickboxing(跆拳道),karate(空手道) and judo.

The Song and Yuan Dynasties witnessed the climax of kung fu development. The practice of kung fu by civil organizations became more and more popular. People actually made a living as martial arts performers all over the country. Usually their performance was carried out by a single person or two people as a pair.

Chinese kung fu achieved greater development in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the Ming Dynasty, a lot of genres came into being and numerous books on martial arts were published. In the Qing Dynasty, the ruling emperor banned the practice of martial arts, and the people had to set up various clubs or societies to pass on the skills in secret.

Today, kung fu continues to be practiced by many people for the purpose of keeping fit or improving body image.

【推荐1】

Exergaming

Exergaming is made up of exercise with video games. And there are lots to choose from. Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) is a fun way to work out. Simply stand on a platform and hit the coloured targets with your feet as you follow the instructions on the screen. You score points by hitting the right target at the right time. As the tagline (标语) says, “Taking dancing to a whole new level!” For a gentler form of exercise, try the “Wii Fit” series of games. You can do yoga, strength training and so on when standing on a balance board. Personalise your workout, or exercise with a friend, competing in games!

Anti-shoes

Anti-shoes are designed to exercise parts of your body while you’re walking. They’re meant to improve your figure, and strengthen your leg and back muscles. The shoes were invented by Swiss engineer Karl Maller. He discovered that the Kenyan Masai tribespeople (who often walk barefoot) don’t suffer from back pain and are famous for their perfect figure. So, he decided that the answer was a shoe with a curved sole (弯曲的鞋底). Walking on this type of shoe is similar to the rocking move of a foot walking on soft sand or grass.

Zumba

Zumba is a fun form of exercise. As their tagline says, “Drop the workout, join the party!” Zumba is a Latin-inspired fitness dance programme that uses hip-hop, samba, martial arts and belly dance moves to get you in shape. It was created by accident when a trainer forgot his exercise CD and used his own samba music instead. There are lots of different types of classes for all levels, including “Zumbatomic” for children aged 4 to 12, “Zumba Gold” for older participants, and “Aqua Zumba” among many others.

Gray matter is made up of the brain’s essential, working neurons(神经元). Fit people also tend to have healthier white matter, which supports and connects neurons. Partly as a consequence of these, exercise is strongly linked with lower risks of dementia(痴呆) and other memory problems with age.

But exercise may increase exposure to air pollution and previous studies have shown the opposite effects of air pollution on the brain. So, what happens then?

Some researchers looked at thousands of middle-aged adults from the UK Bio-bank. The researchers characterized their physical activity patterns depending on the amount of physical activity collected from the devices researchers asked them to wear. They then evaluated air pollution levels where the people lived, asked the participants to complete brain scans, and finally, compared them. Researchers found that exercise was linked to excellent brain health for people in areas with little air pollution. But the beneficial associations almost disappeared for exercisers living in areas with even moderate(中度的) air pollution. They had less gray matter and more unhealthy white matter than people living and exercising away from pollution, even if their workouts were similar.

Extending these findings in a follow-up study, the same scientists found that the more people exercised, the less likely they were to develop dementia over time—provided their local air was clear. When it was moderately polluted, though, they had an increased long-term risk of dementia, whether they exercised or not.

These studies increase the urgency for developing more-effective regulations related to air quality. Public policy could be used to address people’s exposure to air pollution during exercise. For example, since a great amount of air pollution comes from traffic, promoting running or bicycling along paths far from heavy traffic may be more beneficial.

1. What does the author intend to tell us in the first paragraph?
A.The reasons behind dementia.
B.The benefits of workouts on brains.
C.The working process of our brains.
D.The exercise suitable for people with dementia.
2. Why did the researchers ask the participants to wear the devices?
A.To record their daily routine.
B.To monitor the local air quality.
C.To help know their exercise patterns.
D.To warn them of healthy problems.
3. What can we learn from the studies?
A.Memory problems should be cured.
B.The structure of the brain is complicated.
C.People face many risk factors for dementia.
D.More rules against air pollution should be made quickly.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Air quality has to be improved urgently.
B.Most people do exercise in a wrong way.
C.Air pollution may reduce benefits of exercise.
D.People with diseases should do more exercise.

In 1982, there was actress Jane Fonda’s popular VHS aerobic (有氧的) routines, the fitness expert Billy Blanks’ Tae Bo workouts in the 1990s, backbreaking P90X training that took off and more casual Nintendo Wii Fit routines of the same age.

More recently, design and advancements in technology have offered expanded and personalized training options, while reducing the large footprint of most home gyms. In 2018, former ballet dancer Brynn Putnam released Mirror, a fitness system that allows users to follow along with virtual personal trainers in classes including yoga (瑜伽).

That same year, entrepreneur Aly Orady launched Tonal, an AI-powered wall-mounted screen that focuses more on strength training. It features an exercise bench and resistance system that uses electromagnetism (电磁) to imitate weight machines. This month, entrepreneur Trent Ward and designer Yves Behar are uncovering their design for a mirror fitness system, Forme. Forme is reflective like Putnam’s design, uses machine learning to improve workouts like Tonal, and offers attachments including ankle belts, rope handles and a heart rate monitor. When not in use, the two arms that form the resistance system fold behind it and the display screen disappears, turning Forme into a simple full-length mirror.

Interest in home exercise has particularly spiked in recent weeks around the world as physical gyms have temporarily closed. Home workout apps have seen a significant increase in downloads, and trendy brands like Peloton have rolled out free virtual workouts for everyone stuck indoors. One French athlete who was kept away from others chose to run an entire marathon on his 23-foot balcony.

But beyond the new restrictions affecting daily workout routines, Ward and Behar are tapping into the same concerns that have made every home workout appealing: the ability to save time and sweat in the privacy of one’s home. In an age of personal metrics (衡量标准)—where one can measure their heart rate and sleep cycles with smart watches and train for marathons with AI smart sneakers — Ward and Behar want to improve exercise through machine learning. Forme evaluates performance and adjusts weights accordingly.

1. How many kinds of workouts are mentioned in paragraph1?
A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.
2. What does Forme have in common with Mirror as a fitness design?
A.They both can be used as a mirror.
B.They can test more accurate heart rates.
C.They’re designed for strength training.
D.They provide more attachments than Tonal.
3. Which can best replace the underlined word “spiked” in paragraph4?
A.Troubled.B.Heightened.C.Exchanged.D.Disappeared
4. What is more likely to be discussed in the following text?
A.What are the advantages of smart watches.
B.What benefits its users get from Forme.
C.What the personal metrics are about.
D.What are the features of AI smart sneakers.
