According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, 20 percent of children aged 13-18 suffer from a mental health condition. Those are the same years they are likely to be in school and spending most of their time with teachers and fellow students.
With the right support in place, these students might make the most of educational opportunities in order to reach their full academic potential (潜能). Yet, most students who may be dealing with a mental health condition are likely not receiving any treatment. Studies estimate more than 60 percent are not receiving services or treatment from medical or psychological service providers.
One might think, now that teachers, school psychologists (心理学家) and other educational professionals spend a lot of time with students, they could be one key way to identify children who are at risk for different conditions一and get them the help they need. But, for one, those working in the educational field are often already understaffed and overworked. Frequently, a school teacher or school psychologist may be responsible for hundreds, if not thousands of students. And, two, teachers and other staff lack the clinical (临床的) training to properly identify a true mental health condition.
In an ideal world, teachers and other staff who interact with students the most would receive extra training to help identify at-risk individuals一and then direct them to the school nurse or psychologist for a treatment. Although one in five children may suffer from a mental heath condition with the right state of mind and methods, it is possible for families and schools to work together to make sure at-risk children are getting the care they need.

EACH DECEMBER, the Oxford English Dictionary(OED)nominates(提名)a word describe the year which had just passed. In 2019, the OED needed two words: climate; emergency. For 2020, there was another kind of emergency-COVID-19- but this time he OED needed forty words to describe it. Yes, 2020 has been a very unusual year that hasn't been easy to describe.
Two of the obvious words the OED has suggested have been “pandemic” and “lockdown”. The former appeared, of course, because COVID-19 has spread around the world, and the latter because the life-threatening disease has brought most of human activity across the globe to a standstill. Businesses have been closed, travel stopped, and people have had to stay in their homes for weeks or even months on end.
2020 has undeniably been a bad year, but I would like to describe it in a more positive way, so I nominate “cooperation” and “hope” as my words of the year.
As the pandemic began to spread, there was a great deal of cooperation between countries and international health organizations. They shared information about the virus and how it could be contained. And countries shared medical supplies and equipment with other countries which needed them. China took a leading role in this effort by sending masks and protective clothing to Canada, the United States and Europe, as well as to countries in the Middle East and Africa. Without this cooperation, the pandemic, bad as it has been, could have been much worse.
And that brings me to my second word: hope. Even though COVID-19 is still around and will continue to affect our daily lives for at least a little longer, we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Vaccines have been developed against the coronavirus and, with a little “hope”, we will get to see the world begin to return to normal.
2020 is over; 2021 awaits us. With “cooperation” and “hope”, it should make for a wonderful year.
1. Why has the OED suggested “lockdown”?2. What does the author mean by “we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel” in Paragraph 5?
3. Please decide which part of the following statement is false, then underline it and explain why.
2020 is viewed as a bad year because of the spread of the pandemic and it is viewed totally negative.
4. Which word would you nominate to describe 2020 except the words mentioned in this article? And why? (about 40 words)

But Farber is certain he’ll have the last laugh. He’s one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians (兽医) now practicing “holistic” medicine-combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic (按摩疗法) and herbal medicine.
Farber, a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain. He tried muscle-relaxing drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.
Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700. “Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,” he says. “I will do anything to help an animal. That’s my job.”

Adding to the confusion, it’s not any kind of special object. It’s just a common cotton ball. Then what purpose could it possibly serve?
The first-ever cotton balls started showing up in pill bottles in the early 1900s. The medical company Bayer was the first one to add them.
Decades later, pill coatings made the cotton balls useless. The coatings on pills ensured they were no longer in danger of breaking apart in the bottle. Bayer itself actually stopped putting cotton balls in the bottles just decades ago.
According to a report, consumers expected to see the cotton balls there and most didn’t know they were useless.
A.Actually, the idea is not right. |
B.They’re out of place and harmful. |
C.Many other companies, though, still kept them in. |

Wetlands can be found on every continent except Antarctica. Two types of wetlands are recognized on Earth: coastal wetlands and inland wetlands.
Coastal wetlands, as their name suggests, are found along the Atlantic, Pacific and coasts. They are closely linked to the estuaries (河口)where sea water mixes with fresh water to form a special environment. The salt water and the fresh water mix to create a rather difficult environment for most plants. Therefore, many coastal areas aren’t suitable for plenty of plants. Some plants, however, have successfully adapted to this environment. Certain grasses and grasslike plants that adapt to the conditions form coastal wetlands.
Inland wetlands are most common on floodplains along rivers and streams that are surrounded by dry land. Certain types of inland wetlands are common to particular areas of the country. Many of these wetlands are seasonal. The amount of water and the time of its presence partly affect the functions of a wetland and its role in the environment. Wetlands that appear dry at times for significant parts of the year often provide important living places for wildlife in these areas.
The value of a wetland to human society depends on a set of relationships between the wetland and the other ecosystems. Wetlands play an important role in the ecosystem. Many species of birds and animals rely on wetlands for food, water and shelter. The plants and wildlife in wetlands are part of global cycles for water. Besides, scientists are beginning to realize that atmospheric maintenance (大气维护)may be another wetlands’ function. Wetlands store carbon within their plant communities and soil instead of giving it out to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Thus, wetlands help to improve global climate conditions.

Last Friday, Lyft—the ride-sharing company, went public as its stocks (股票) started trading on the market. Lyft has become the first big initial public offering of the “gig economy” age. While the company is not making profits yet, it is changing the meaning of work. What is gig economy and what makes it so appealing?
Gig works are independent contracts or part-time jobs such as Uber. In the gig economy, companies hire independent contractors instead of full-time employees. This is different from traditional companies where full-time workers hold a lifetime career. In the past, only small companies hired contractors, while today, employers like Amazon and Google rely on temporary workforce. These companies save costs as they are not legally required to provide healthcare benefits, retirement savings or paid time off to gig workers.
Gig work appeals to different people for different reasons. For some, it affords flexible timings and for others who are looking for full-time jobs, it provides a source of income to support themselves. Some people work a full-time job and supplement (补充) their salary with gig jobs such as driving for Uber or Lyft.
Joining the gig economy may be simple, but maintaining a steady career is easier said than done. Gig work comes with unsteady pay and workloads. You’re your own boss. It sounds fun, but when you have no self-control and an unsteady job, you might splurge all your money the first week and live on bread pieces for the rest of the month! Besides a strong sense of responsibility, gig workers have to stay up to date to get companies to hire them.
Despite the challenges gig workers face, nearly 60 million Americans are part of this workforce. As this number grows, we have to see how society and companies adapt to this new world of work!
1. What can be learned about Lyft from the passage?A.It has built up a large fortune. |
B.It employs a fixed number of full-time workers. |
C.It appeals to people as a means of public transport. |
D.It marks the arrival of gig economy age. |
A.People seeking for a steady income. | B.People in need of flexible working hours. |
C.Those desperate to get paid vacations. | D.Those concerned about retirement accounts. |
A.Spend money freely. | B.Save money automatically. |

D.People should adjust to new work trends with the rise of gig companies. |

But after being enrolled in an online course last fall semester, I came to realize online classes were merely a means to fulfil course requirements.
First of all, students lack the desire to learn, and they simply complete their assignments to receive credit for a passing grade rather than genuinely engage with the course material.
As online courses tend to have more than 100 students, most of the assignments are short and simple. They are not designed for students to interact with the material in depth but designed to be graded easily to accommodate such a large number of students.
Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of taking an online class is the absence of face-to-face interaction between the teacher and their students. Live sessions are infrequent and are often scheduled during the middle of the day when students have to attend other classes or work. The office hours of the professor may also be during inconvenient times for many students as well. Most interaction with the professor has to be through email which is often impersonal. It is nearly impossible for students to build a relationship with their professor.
There is also little interaction among students. It can be harder for students to create study groups and form relationships with their peers.
Online classes also require either a computer or laptop and a reliable Internet connection. Not all students have access to these types of resources, whether it is for financial or other reasons, and some students can be put at a disadvantage. Offering online classes certainly helps students who would otherwise not be able to attend classroom sessions. However, they fail to provide a true education with an emphasis on convenience rather than critical thinking. We need restructure online classes in which students can have a learning experience that will actually provide quality education.
1. What can we infer about students enrolled in online classes?A.They are unmotivated to learn, |
B.They can access course materials easily. |
C.They rarely fulfil the course requirements. |
D.They can learn at their own pace. |
A.They are meant to facilitate interaction. |
B.They are made convenient to mark. |
C.They are given to accommodate students` needs. |
D.They are based on easily accessible material. |
A.They make professors’ offices much less accessible. |
B.They are frequently scheduled at irregular times. |
C.They provide little chance for students to build relationships with each other. |
D.They tend to increase professors’ burden of replying students’ emails. |
A.Teachers will worry about poor Internet connections. |
B.Most students may get critical thinking skills from it. |
C.Schools with limited resources will be at a disadvantage. |
D.Some students may have difficulty attending them. |
