You must have heard about jogging as a popular way of keeping fit, but what about plogging?

Plogging is a combination (结合) of jogging and picking up litter, from the Swedish phrase “plocka upp”, which refers to picking up rubbish. Plogging usually contains running outside, with a bin liner or carry bag, while picking up rubbish which is thrown on the ground. The idea of plogging is mainly about environmental protection as well as physical health — to care for Mother Nature as well as your body.

As a workout, plogging is more useful than simply running, because it provides more body movements by adding bending and stretching. As 2018’s hottest way of fitness, plogging has grown in popularity in more than 40 countries.

Have you recently noticed people carrying trash bags while jogging? Or their hands filled with old plastic bottles? You might soon! Because plogging is making its way to the United States. It has been popular among exercisers who are tired of rubbish along their way.

“I’m not going to just let litter sit there. I’m not going to just walk past that plastic bottle,” said Emily Wright, a plogger in California.“I run a lot and I love to spend time in nature. It’s so easy to just bring the litter and put it in the nearest bin, and it makes you feel that you’re doing a difference!”

Laura Lindberg, who lives in New York, said a few months ago she learned about plogging and had what she called an “aha moment”. She has been plogging for several weeks along the Hudson River. “It makes me feel good for so many reasons,” Lindberg said. “Plogging not only helps the environment, it’s quite good for my health.”

Plogging is an easy, affordable way to get fit and help the environment at the same time. To join the wave, all you need is a pair of sports shoes and a rubbish bag, so what are you waiting for?

【推荐1】My sister Alice and I have been trying to get people to stop dropping cigarette (香烟) butts (烟头) for seven years. One day, we were walking in our hometown and saw hundreds of cigarette butts on the ground. They made the town look so ugly that we decided to start a group to make people stop dropping butts. We called it “No Butts About It”.

At first, we drew pictures with “The Earth is not your ashtray (烟灰缸)” written on them. We put the pictures around our hometown—in parks, by beaches, and along roads. We wanted to make people understand that dropping butts hurts the environment. Most smokers don’t think that dropping butts hurts the Earth. But it does, and all rubbish does!

Later, we wrote to companies and asked them for money to help us. We used the money to buy ashtrays to give to smokers. We wanted smokers to carry the ashtrays with them so they didn’t have to drop butts.

At the moment, we are trying to get cigarette companies to put an ashtray in each pack of cigarettes. Some companies want to do it. Many people have started to join our group since it began. Today there are 45 other “No Butts About It” groups in America.

Now there even groups in England, Australia, and India! Many newspapers have written about my sister and me over the last seven years. And we have won many prizes for what we do. But we are not interested in prizes. We just want to make the Earth a better and cleaner place for animals, plants and people.

One day, it will be.

【推荐2】As people are becoming more socially conscious about where their food comes from and how it impacts the planet, they are choosing animal-free plant-based options. Cow-free meat has been around for quite some time and the popularity of brands like Beyond Meat and cultivated meat from Aleph Farms and other are soaring. While there are a large number of plant-based milk substitutes, none of have the same taste of cow’ milk. Now, an Israeli food-tech startup Remilk created real dairy products without harming a single cow or the planet.

The company stresses that their product Remilk is not a milk substitute but rather is the real deal. Made from a special process called microbial fermentation, milk is manufactured in a lab instead of in a cow. And the end product is very healthy. “In a very simple way, we take the gene that encodes for the milk protein,” said Aviv Wolf, CEO of Remilk. “The gene function as an instruction book for the production of the protein it encodes. And so, we insert the gene into a microbe that we’ve developed and it instructs our microbe to produce the specific protein in a very efficient way.”

The company says that the lab-produced milk tastes identical to the real thing and they hope to eventually replace cows by creating every dairy product sold. They expect to roll out plant-based cheese and yogurt in addition to milk. “Remilk was founded with the mission to stop using animal to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option,” Wolff said. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable any more.”

The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high. According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them. Dairy operation consume large amounts of water and run-off of manure and fertilizers from there farms get into local waterways. The production of Remilk uses only 5 percent of the resources and produces only 1 percent of the waste of producing cow’s milk according to company. 文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了Antonio Vicente花费40多年时间“复活”了一片森林。

【推荐3】The old man Antonio Vicente has spent over four decades of his life fighting against the trend. As Brazilian landowners cut down rainforest to make room for profitable plantations (种植园) and grasslands, he struggled to bring the jungles of his childhood back to life.

“When I was a child, the farmers cut down the trees to make grasslands, and the water dried up and did not come back,” he says, “I thought: Water is valuable; no one makes water and the population will not stop growing. What is going to happen? We are going to run out of water.”

With only some donkeys and a small team of hired workers, Antonio Vicente set about bringing back the forest. What started out as a weekend hobby soon became a permanent way of life, and Antonio recalls often spending whole days and nights in his young jungle, surrounded by rats and foxes, and eating banana sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Over the last 40 years, he has planted an estimated 50,000 trees on his 31 hectare land, which now make up a small but unique area of rainforest, and a haven for wildlife.

Today, the forest is alive with the sounds of birds and insects living there, and more species settle in every year. “There are all kinds of birds, squirrels, lizards, and even the boars are returning,” Antonio says. “If you ask me who my family are, I would say all this right here, each one of these that I planted from a seed.”
