The US government has come out with new advice for Americans about how much exercise they should get each week.

In 2008, the US government came out with its first set of exercise advice, called Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The guidelines were based on research by scientists into how people could stay healthy by being active.

Since 2008, scientists have learned more about how helpful exercise is. For example, they’ve learned that being active can make it much less likely that someone will suffer from illnesses. Exercise also makes people worry less, sleep better, and makes their brains work better. So, now, ten years later, after the government has studied the findings, they’ve come up with a new set of guidelines.

Much of the advice is the same as it was in 2008, but there are a few changes. One change is that the government has added activity guidelines for children aged 3 to 5. This was not included in 2008, because younger children were usually very active then. But now, as young children spend more time looking at screens, they are moving less. The government says that children between 3 and 5 should have at least three hours of active play a day.

For children aged 6 to 17, the guidelines have not changed much since 2008. The government says they should get at least an hour of medium to very active movement every day. Most of these activities should be strong enough to raise the heart rate. Children should also do activities that build muscles at least three times a week.

In 2008, the government said that adults should get at least 150 to 300 minutes of medium strength activity every week. But only 20% of Americans actually move that much. Now based on new scientific findings, the government says that even short periods of movement that raise the heart rate are helpful.

The government is starting a program called “Move Your Way”, which it hopes will help encourage Americans to get healthier by meeting these movement goals.

【推荐1】Back in November 1988, Robert Tappan Morris was a 20-something graduate student at Cornell who wanted to know how big the Internet was- that is, how many computers were connected to it. So he wrote a program that would travel from computer to computer and ask each machine to send a signal back to a control server, which would keep count. That was how the world’s first cyber (网络) attack set the stage for modern cyber security challenges.

The program worked well. Morris had known that if it traveled too fast there might be problems, but the limits he built in weren’t enough to keep the program from blocking up large sections of the Internet, both copying itself to new machines and sending those pings (电子脉冲) back, When he realized what was happening, even his messages warning system administrators about the problem couldn’t get through. Large numbers of Internet-connected computers are told to send lots of traffic to one particular address, overloading it with so much activity that either the system shuts down or its network connections are completely blocked. Morris’s program is now known as the “Morris worm”.

Worms and viruses are similar, but different in one key way: A virus needs a command, from a user or a hacker (黑客), to run its program. A worm, by contrast, hits the groundrunning all on its own. For example. even if you never open your email program, a worm that gets onto your computer might email a copy of itself to everyone in your address book.

In a time when few people were concerned about harmful software and nobody had protective software in his computer, the Morris worm spread quickly. It took 72 hours for researchers at Purdue and Berkeley to stop the worm. It affected tens of thousands of systems, Cleaning up the infection cost hundreds or thousands of dollars for each affected machine.

Morris wasn’t trying to destroy the Internet, but he was sentenced to three years of probation (缓刑) and a roughly US $ 10.000 fine. In the late 1990s, though. he became a dot-com millionaire- and is now a professor at MIT.

1. What is Morris’s intention 1o write the program known now as the “Morris worm”?
A.To test the effect of protective software.
B.To start a harmful attack on the Internet.
C.To see how well a program can work on the Internet.
D.To get the number of the computers connected to the Internet.
2. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.What loss the problem caused.
B.How the problem was dealt with.
C.How the unexpected problem came about.
D.What Morris did to prevent the problem from expanding.
3. What does the underlined part “hits the ground” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Copies itself.B.Gets on the Internet.
C.Gets the user’s command.D.Copies your email address book.
4. What happened to Morris after the attack?
A.He was punished for it.B.He invented a protective software.
C.He got help from a millionaire.D.He was asked to clear up the Internet.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了海洋以及海水对人类的重要性,同时也描述了海洋的现状以及人们为了保护海洋所做的努力。

【推荐2】About 97% of the world’s water is salty and is found in our oceans and seas. But, as we can’t drink sea water, how can it be important?

Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing number of animals that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae (海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important sea water is!

Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic (微小的) animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced.

The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man. People once thought that the oceans were so big that it didn’t matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop.

Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats (海域). Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions to protect fish stocks in the oceans and new techniques are being pioneered (提倡) to cope with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How important sea water is!

1. Which of the following is the proper order of the food chain?
A.small animals→algae→microscopic animals→large animals→man
B.algae→microscopic animals→large animals→larger animals→man
C.small animals→algae→large animals→microscopic animals→man
D.microscopic animals→algae→large animals→larger animals→man
2. People used to think that the rubbish thrown into the sea ____.
A.wouldn’t harm the fish in the sea
B.would change the balance of the food chain
C.would be broken down in the sea
D.wouldn’t do much harm to the sea
3. From the passage, we learn that ____.
A.most fish and sea animals live at the surface of the seas
B.it is very difficult to break the balance of a food chain
C.excessive fishing has caused the decrease in fish stocks
D.it won’t be long before the problems concerning oceans are solved
4. Which of the following is NOT a way being used to protect the oceans?
A.The use of international agreements.
B.Forbidding fishing to protect fish stocks.
C.The use of new techniques.
D.Raising people’s awareness of protecting the oceans.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。作者根据自己在芬兰的经历,介绍芬兰把图书馆建设作为教育和学习的重要手段,也为芬兰的发展奠定了坚实的基础。

【推荐3】“A library card was the first thing that I had ever owned here,” says Razmyar, who arrived in Finland as a refugee (难民). Unable to speak the language, and trying to make sense of the new city, she was surprised to be given a library card that would let her read books for free. “I still have that library card in my wallet today in honor of the privilege(特殊待遇)presented to a refugee by a foreign land,” she says.

Today, Razmyar is a key official of Finland, and plans to build a new central library called Oodi. She is not alone in her love for libraries. The country’s 5.5 million people borrow about 68 million books a year.

While libraries worldwide are facing budget(预算)cuts, a decline in users and closing down, Finland is bucking the trend. The UK spends just £14.40 per head on libraries. But Finland spends £50.50 per head to satisfy citizens’ needs. While more than 478 libraries have closed in the UK since 2010, Helsinki, a city in Finland, is spending €98 million creating a huge new one.

Why are Finland’s city libraries growing? 84% of the country’s population is urban, and libraries are vital places for socializing. Besides, while many libraries worldwide provide Internet access and other services, libraries here have expanded to lending e-publications, sports equipment, and other things of occasional use.

And Oodi will offer more since people need places to meet, work, and develop their digital skills. It has been designed to give citizens a free space to actively do what they want to do. Its design is certainly exciting. However, the most impressive thing is that the project is such a costly one that it will cost the citizens a huge sum of money, but it has not been controversial(有争议的). “They’re excited about it across the board,” says architect director Harris. “It will be important to daily life here in Helsinki.”

Oodi is more than a monument to citizens’ pride. As part of Finland’s celebration of a century of independence, the library is not merely a place to store books. “I think Finland could not have given a better gift to the people. It symbolizes the significance of learning and education, which have been fundamental reasons for Finland’s development and success,” says Razmyar.

1. Why has Razmyar kept the library card with her for so long?
A.To show her loyalty to her motherland.
B.To remind her of the importance of libraries.
C.To remind her to help more refugees from abroad.
D.To show her appreciation for Finland’s kindness.
2. What does the underlined word “bucking” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Explaining.
B.Considering.
C.Going against.
D.Setting aside.
3. About the library Oodi, what amazes the author most?
A.Its success in earning Finnish citizens’ support.
B.Its unusual architecture designed by Harris.
C.Its important role in people’s future life.
D.Its huge construction costs.
4. Which of the following statements might Razmyar agree with?
A.Finland should pick up better gifts for people.
B.Finland tries hard to promote its public education.
C.Libraries play an important role in Finland’s development.
D.Libraries make Finland a much more independent country.
