The University of Bologna in northern Italy is different from most North American universities. One major difference is its age.     1     (found) in the tenth century, it is the oldest university in Europe. Its ancient halls give students an appreciation of history. North American universities, on the other hand, are all    2     (relative) new, and students are generally surrounded by more modern buildings. Another difference is the campus. Giant Panda National Park,     1     lies in Central China stretching across Sichuan, Ningxia, and Shaanxi provinces, is in development     2     will include 67 existing panda reserves.

The giant panda is     3     symbol of China and one of the most adorable creatures across the globe. This national park     4    （feature）a population of 1,864 giant pandas, accounting for 80% of the Chinese giant panda population. Apart from the small number of pandas located in zoos around the world, all other giant pandas can be found within China.

Connecting the 67 existing reserves and     5    （establish）protected areas between them allows the pandas to travel between the different regions, strengthening the panda population. This is a focused effort     6    （help）increase the panda population.

The combination of these over 60 panda reserves is a commitment by the Chinese government to protect the species. What makes people     7    （amaze）is that the population is growing. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has upgraded the species     8     endangered to threatened. Although this improvement is     9    （incredible）positive, there is much the world needs to do to help secure the     10    （survive）of the species.

Around the heights of a mountain range in southwestern China, thousands of different species of flowers mysteriously live together in harmony, without fighting they do in other areas for the pollinators (授粉) that are crucial to their continued     1     (survive). The flowers’ coexistence     2     (confuse) many scientists for years, but a new study may offer answers.

A team of Chinese researchers set out to better understand the phenomenon. By documenting the flowering patterns of 34 different species, they discovered that they were not blooming at the same time,     3     at different points of the season,     4     (explain) their ability to thrive so closely to one another.

The Hengduan Mountains are known for     5     (they) biological diversity. However, the mountains are also spectacular because of the     6     (estimate) 12,000 species of flowers that call them home, some 3,500 of which aren’t found naturally anywhere else on Earth.

This morning we attended a lecture about Pompeii. The city     3     (found) in the 8^th century BC, the Romans took     4     Pompeii. Near the city was a volcano. On 24 August AD 79, the volcano erupted. Many people were buried alive, ad so was     5     city. Today I saw the city of Pompeii     6     it was 2,000 years ago. How amazing! The city was forgotten for many years     7     the 18^th century when a farmer discovered a stone with writing on it. People started to dig in this area for treasure, which caused much damage. Thus, in 1860, the area was put under government     8     (protect) so it could be preserved and studied. The volcano is still there, but looks very quiet now. It is hard     9     (imagine) how this     10     (peace) volcano destroyed the whole city.

Come and see the Terracotta Army: more than 8,000 statues    1    (make) in the third century BCE to guard the tomb of the Chinese Emperor Qingshihuang! Each statue    2    (have) a different face, leading researchers to believe that each one is a copy of a real soldier. The statues fill only one part of the emperor’s huge tomb,    3    still has not been completely unearthed. More than 700,000 people worked for nearly 40 years to build this tomb. However, no one in modern times knew about the tomb or the terracotta statues until 1974, when some    4    (farmer) discovered the tomb while they were digging a well!
