Many of us like to eat out and treat ourselves to delicious food. We are used to choosing hearty (丰盛的), fat-filled dishes and sugary desserts, which are not easily cooked at home.
The recent rise of light meals, however, gives us a smarter choice. According to Economic Daily, low-calorie, low-fat and high-fibre meals have become popular in China’s restaurants and online delivery platforms.
The country saw a rapid increase of restaurants concentrating on light meals, from just 600 in 2017 to more than 3,500 in 2018. According to a report published by Meituan, a major online food delivery platform, the number of light meals ordered online also rose 75 percent from the previous year.
Having a light meal, however, doesn’t mean eating only vegetables. Different from the meat-free lifestyle, a typical light dish avoids oily, salty and spicy food. Instead, it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Healthy nutrients(营养物)are the theme of the light meal.
These dishes are useful for keeping healthy and controlling your weight. That’s probably why so many people, especially the youths are into them. They see it as “a great way to avoid getting fat,” wrote the Telegraph.
“After eating several light meals, I now prefer light flavours,” Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan, told China Daily. She shared a picture of her lunch: a mixture of beef, eggs, corn, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.
These changes in eating behaviour are connected to deeper changes in how people think about food, says Walter Willett, chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard T.Chan School of Public Health, US. “Diet quality, not quantity, is important for both weight control and long-term well-being,” Willett told The New York Times.
So the next time you have a party with friends, try a light meal. It will satisfy not only your stomachs but maybe also your hearts.

But many people have trouble sleeping, and many people love eating ice cream, and the possibility of cookies-and-cream-flavored Ambien (一种助眠药), even though that's not exactly how the product functions,is going to be irresistible to people with sleep problems everywhere.
“Part of me is like,I’m jealous I’m not part of this marketing programme,” said Raj Dasgupta, assistant professor of clinical medicine specializing in sleep at Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. “They knew exactly how to appeal to customers.”
You could eat Nightfood any time of day without feeling sleepy, but the product is designed for sleep because surveys have shown one of the most common times people tuck into a pint of ice cream is at night, probably while watching Netflix. But can junk food really solve your sleep problems? Probably not, Dasgupta said.
The best way to improve your sleep is to practice good sleep hygiene: have a set bedtime and wake time every day, avoid caffeine and screens late at night, and, uh, do not eat within two hours of your bedtime. But our willpower fails us in the face of a “Russian Doll” binge with a pint of mint chocolate chip.
“They know no one is going to listen to this advice,so,might as well cater to (迎合) them,” Dasgupta said. Sugary snacks “are the no-no foods you don’t want someone to eat before bed. If they’re going to eat it anyway,I’d rather they grab the nutritious one rather than the Twinkie or the cupcake.”
And here's the thing: It actually tastes really good. Unlike other “functional” ice creams that boast of higher protein and lower sugar and fat, Nightfood uses real sugar — no alternative .sweeteners. There is milk and cream in it. It has fewer calories than your typical pint, but you would hardly know it from the texture or taste.
Nightfood is not the only sleep-friendly product on the market. There are also several carbonated sleep drinks, including Som and Neuro Sleep. They might help a bit, but Dasgupta cautions that sleep-promoting foods are not a cure-all.
“You’re not just going to start eating this food and get great sleep. There's other things that go into it, too,” like your overall health, stress level and the amount of time you spend aimlessly scrolling through Twitter in bed.

After taking just a single bite of one, the man suffered from serious headaches in the following few days, reported BBC News.
In fact, reports of stomachache and headache caused by eating spicy food are not something unusual. But if chilies are harmful, why is it that human beings are the only animals to eat this vegetable? According to the website Huanqiu, about 600 million Chinese people-almost half of the national population-are chili eaters. So what makes people love chilies so much? The human body reacts to the burning feeling that comes from eating chilies by releasing natural chemicals that “produce a sense of happiness”, noted BBC News.
And the benefits go even further than just personal enjoyment. A survey conducted by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences found that the death rate of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than, once a week. The number decreased to 14 percent for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week. And another study done by the University of Vermont came to a similar conclusion. “The data encourages people to eat more spicy food to improve health and reduce death risk at an early age,” Liu Qi, a nutritionist at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, told BBC News.
Chilies have anti-cancer quality and the ability to increase our metabolism(新陈代谢). So, don’t worry if you love spicy food. It seems that chilies are actually good for us-except for the Carolina Reaper, perhaps.

In the last few years, the rates of vaccine-preventable illness have been on the rise. In most cases, these outbreaks began with children who were unvaccinated. To deal with this threat, some schools in New York have been refusing to allow unvaccinated children to attend school. Several parents thought this was unfair and filed lawsuits. Just recently, though, a court ruled in favor of the city schools.
The court made the right decision. Vaccine policy depends not only on the added protection that vaccines provide for those who get shots, but also on the decreased likelihood that anyone will come into contact with the disease. This is known as community immunity. It refers to the fact that when enough people are immunized, then there really can’t be an outbreak. And if there can’t be an outbreak, then everyone is protected.
This is important, because there are people who cannot be given immunizations for various reasons. For example, small babies can’t be given all vaccines.
In 1995, the chicken pox vaccine was introduced in the United States. Over time, more and more children received it. In 2011, a study looked at how the program affected the number of children who died from the disease.
The first thing noted in the paper was that death from chicken pox went down considerably after the vaccine was introduced. From 2001 through 2007, the rates of death remained much lower, with just a few children dying from chicken pox nationally each year.
What’s more from 2004 through 2007, not one child less than 1 year of age died in the United States from chicken pox. This is important, because we cannot give the chicken pox vaccine to babies. In other words, all those babies were saved not because we vaccinated them against this illness, but because older children were.
Therefore, people who refuse to vaccinate their children aren’t just putting themselves at risk — they’re putting everyone else in danger, too.

Tuesday is actually the best day of the week if you want to grab a bargain, according to an exhaustive analysis of online shopping. Thursday is the second best day followed by Friday—but Sunday is when you are least likely to make a saving.
The study also looked at months and found that the preChristmas rush in November is when there are most bargains around on the web—and not the January sales. US retailer (零售商) reporting service Sum All examined 3,000 companies and half a billion transactions (交易) as part of its report. It worked out the average discount (折扣) offered to consumers on each day of the week and over different times of the year.
The best day of the week was Tuesday where savings were 4.81 percent, followed by Thursday on 4.80 percent. In third place was Friday at 4.65 percent, then Wednesday at 4.13 percent and Monday at 4.11 percent. Only the foolish would shop on a Saturday where the discounts were typically 3.84 percent—and Sunday was the worst with 3.37 percent.
The analysis by month is even more surprising as most people think that waiting until the postChristmas sales would yield the biggest discounts. In fact, November is when you will get the largest savings at 5.99 percent on average.January came in second at 4.95 percent, followed by May at 4.50 percent.
The worst month to buy online was March where you could expect to save just 2.76 percent. Consumers and experts have been speculating for years about the best time to shop online.
Booking a flight has almost become a science with some claiming that buying six weeks before you travel guarantees you the best price. However, a recent analysis by the US Airlines Reporting Commission found that was not actually the case.
Not only did the six week window fail to pile up, in some cases the best fares were on sale as long as 24 weeks before departure. The ARC said that booking well in advance is best advised for busy routes or long haul flights (长途航班), as the price only tends to go up.

The research involved interviews with 10,000 teenagers in England. “Our results suggest social media itself doesn’t cause harm, but that frequent use may disrupt activities that positively impact mental health such as sleeping and exercising, while increasing exposure of young people to harmful content, particularly cyberbullying (网络欺凌),” study co-author Russell Viner said in a statement.
Bob Patton, a lecturer of the University of Surrey, said this means strategies focusing only on reducing social media use to improve mental health might not help. He said, “Building strategies to increase resilience (适应力) to cyberbullying and promote better sleep and exercise is needed to reduce psychological (心理的) harm.”
The research was conducted by interviewing teenagers once a year. They would report the frequency of their using social media. More than three times daily was considered “very frequent”. The researchers noted that they did not capture how much time the participants spent on these websites, which was a limitation of the study. “For boys, the impact on their mental health may result from other reasons,” the authors said.
The researchers found that, in both sexes, very frequent social media use was associated with greater psychological harm. The effect was especially clear among girls: The more often they checked social media, the greater their psychological harm was.
But most impact on psychological harm in girls could be accounted for by lower sleep quality and greater exposure to cyberbullying, with decreased physical activities playing a lesser role. But for boys, those factors explained only 12% of the effects of very frequent social media use on psychological harm.
“It’s an important distinction,” said Ann DeSmet, a professor at Ghent University in Belgium. “If healthy lifestyles can be replaced, the positive effects of social media use, such as encouraging social interactions, can be more supported.”

The World Day for Laboratory Animals, observed on April 24 each year, serves as an important reminder of our ethical obligations toward these animals. Established in 1979 by the UK’s National Anti-Vivisection Society, it advocates the“3R”principle: replacement, reduction, and refinement. Replacement involves using lower-level animals or alternative research methods. Reduction aims to minimize the number of animals used , while refinement focuses on human e practices.
However, ethical questions related to lab animals still raise concerns. For example, in September 2023, Neuralink, the company established by US billionaire Elon Musk, was said to mistreating monkeys during its experiments. After brain-computer chips were implanted in their brains, many of their monkeys suffered from multiple painful symptoms including diarrhea and paralysis, according to the US Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. In the end, there was no choice but to euthanize (使安乐死) the animals due to their suffering. This highlights the ongoing need for human e alternatives to animal experiments.
Thankfully, advancements in science and technology are opening new pathways that could further minimize or even wipe out the need for animal testing. For example, the organs-on-chips technology allows scientists to grow special human cells that act like real organs, on a tiny chip. Scientists use these organ chips to study how medicines or other things might affect the organs, without having to use animals for testing, according to Live Science Intelligence.
Li Yanqing at the Institute of Zoology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences wrote in an article: “How people treat animals not only reflects people’s understanding of the world, but also shows people’s attitude toward life.”

Beyond adopting a new technique, marathon runners can expect to see an improvement by reviewing on the breathing basics. Studies suggest that 10 percent to 14 percent of women are shallow breathers, over-breathers or mouth-breathers, all of which could restrict movement of the ribcage and create a build-up of tension in the upper body and tightness in the chest. And while this may not bother you when you’re sitting at your desk, it’s a different story when you begin a workout. The biggest mistake that Professor Dickinson sees is when athletes want to maintain-or pick up- speed. “When you’re working harder, you don’t tell your heart to beat faster. It just knows that it needs to,” he says, adding that the same is true of your breathing. He explains that your body is built with neurons called chemoreceptors, which tell your muscles when they need to breathe more.
So how should you be breathing during an intense workout? Professor Dickinson recommends athletes take basic breath pattern mastery, before moving on to respiratory muscle training.
“Some people accept that the breathlessness they experience when exercising is just their norms and that they’ve reached the limit they can push themselves to in their workouts,” says Professor Dickinson. But committing to these techniques, he explains, could be impactful on your performance. However, those who have high blood pressure, should check their conditions before getting to work on their breath. “In some cases, it could be that you’re only breathing at 80 percent of your capacity, so increasing that percentage by practicing breathing exercises can have a huge impact on your fitness performance,” Professor Dickinson adds. The results just might be breathtaking.
