How can you delete your bad behaviors and stick to good ones instead?    1

Choose a substitute for your bad habit. You need to have a plan ahead of time for how you will respond when you face the stress or boredom that leads to your bad habit. What are you going to do when you get the urge to smoke? What are you going to do when Facebook is calling to you to delay?    2

Cut out as many triggers (诱因) as possible. If the first thing you do when you sit on the couch is pick up the TV remote, then hide the remote in a closet in a different room.     3     Make it easier on yourself to break bad habits by avoiding the things that cause them.

Join forces with somebody. Maybe you “quit smoking”, but you kept it to yourself. Instead, pair up with someone and quit together. The two of you can hold each other accountable and celebrate your victories together.     4     Surround yourself with people who live the way you want to live. You don’t need to abandon your old friends, but don’t underestimate the power of finding some new ones.

5     See yourself buying healthy food or waking up early. Whatever the bad habit is that you are looking to break, visualize yourself quitting it, smiling, and enjoying your success. See yourself building a new identity.

Breaking bad habits takes time and effort. You might not have success right away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have it at all.

A.Visualize yourself succeeding.
B.Imagine you can make it in time.
C.Here are some ideas for breaking your bad habits.
D.Your environment makes your bad habit easier and good habits harder.
E.If you eat cookies when they are in the house, then throw them all away.
F.Knowing that someone else expects you to be better is a powerful motivator.
G.Whatever it is, you need to have a plan for what you will do instead of your bad habit.

【推荐1】My life at senior high was about to start. I knew it was never easy — higher expectations from my parents, stricter teachers, etc. But the most challenging was how I could do well in my studies with so many difficult subjects. Anyway, I was waiting for it in my eagerness.

The day before the first day of school, I was still nervous, when the phone rang. It was a recording of our head teacher. Sounding truly serious, she said that school was canceled on Monday and would be delayed until Tuesday. This was because of the fire in the La Canada-Flintridge area near my community. My school was being used as a shelter. Though I agreeably accepted the extra day of vacation, I appeared disappointed on purpose and told my mom “It’s a pity!”

On Monday evening, I was preparing for my big day. My backpack was filled with new textbooks and notebooks. Then the phone rang. Again a recording of the serious-toned head teacher told us to stay home: the fire was still going and it would be impossible to go to school with smoke still thick in the air. I could feel my anxiety growing inside of me. When was school going to start? I wished the first day of school would hurry up and come so that I could get it over with.

Finally it was Wednesday. The real first day of my school. I walked into campus feeling butterflies in my stomach even though I had walked these same grounds for three years because the junior school is next door. But as I started getting around with the classmates, teachers and courses, though it was my first day I already felt like I was well on my way toward a successful high school life.
