The One I’m Grateful to

As flying through the blue sky, 5,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean, 23-year-old pilot Mary heard the sound — a subtle change in the noise as the engines began to operate hard.
Her co-pilot, 26-year-old Thomas, heard it, too. They were just two young pilots, taking a short trip with no passengers. Then, without warning, the pilots lost power to the engines.
The next few minutes were in disorder. Nothing worked. At about 1,000 feet above the ocean the plane fell quickly, Mary made the last emergency call for help. “We’re 25 miles northwest of Kona,” she said to air traffic control. “We’re going down.”
Mary held the controls tightly. She knew the chances of survival were slim. “Just land as if you`re landing on the ground,” Mary told herself. As the plane rushed toward the ocean, she forced herself to imagine a runway (飞机跑道) spreading along the water.
Thomas and Mary were thrown forward violently. Thomas opened his eyes to wait for death. He realized that he was, unbelievably, OK. Mary was next to him, shocked and bleeding, but still conscious. She rose to her feet hard and felt the blood pouring down her face. “Get out!” Thomas shouted loudly. The water was knee-high inside the plane, and it would be flooded in moments.
Mary made every effort through the water toward the door, picking up two life jackets along the way. By the time she’d climbed out onto the wing, the water was covering the seats of the plane. As the plane sank, they jumped into the ocean. Within seconds, the plane disappeared from the surface.
The waves broke around them. Thomas and Mary had done the impossible by surviving a crash landing into the ocean. Mary, however, was frightened and started to cry. Thomas tried to calm her by making small talk.
“When will the rescuers get here?” Mary asked.
“They’re coming,” Thomas said.” We’re just going to be here.”

Only four years ago, Kameelah was told that she would never walk again. But now, with the support of her father James, she can run, jump and even get her green belt in Tae Kwondo(跆拳道).
When Kameelah was 11, she was diagnosed as scoliosis(脊椎侧凸).Her family was told that only 10 percent of all children were troubled by scoliosis, but they just couldn't believe Kameelah was a part of that 10 percent.
Her first surgery was arranged immediately. The doctor had the difficult task of rebuilding Kameelah's entire spine(脊椎)and then re-situating her organs around it. "I had never been in the hospital for anything serious before, and I'd never had surgery , either . I was so scared , " Kameelah recalled .
She was given something to fall asleep for the surgery, so that she would not feel anything. Because this surgery dealt with the spine and nerve connections to the brain, the doctor had to make sure that Kameelah could still move her body parts right .Therefore, she was woken up in the middle of the surgery. "They asked me to move my fingers, then my toes. I could hardly understand what was going on. It was bright, and things weren't very clear. To look back, I can't believe that I was awake while my back was open, and the doctors had their hands in there.
"The first surgery was successful, but Kameelah would have to return two more times for the doctor to completely fix the problem. It was at the end of the third surgery when things went wrong...really wrong. The doctor put in a metal stick, which happened to be too small , into Kameelah's back . As a result , it affected some of the nerves in her spine. She was practically paralyzed(几乎瘫痪)from the waist down.
