Many of us like to eat out and treat ourselves to delicious food. We are used to choosing hearty (丰盛的), fat-filled dishes and sugary desserts, which are not easily cooked at home.
The recent rise of light meals, however, gives us a smarter choice. According to Economic Daily, low-calorie, low-fat and high-fibre meals have become popular in China’s restaurants and online delivery platforms.
The country saw a rapid increase of restaurants concentrating on light meals, from just 600 in 2017 to more than 3,500 in 2018. According to a report published by Meituan, a major online food delivery platform, the number of light meals ordered online also rose 75 percent from the previous year.
Having a light meal, however, doesn’t mean eating only vegetables. Different from the meat-free lifestyle, a typical light dish avoids oily, salty and spicy food. Instead, it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Healthy nutrients(营养物)are the theme of the light meal.
These dishes are useful for keeping healthy and controlling your weight. That’s probably why so many people, especially the youths are into them. They see it as “a great way to avoid getting fat,” wrote the Telegraph.
“After eating several light meals, I now prefer light flavours,” Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan, told China Daily. She shared a picture of her lunch: a mixture of beef, eggs, corn, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.
These changes in eating behaviour are connected to deeper changes in how people think about food, says Walter Willett, chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard T.Chan School of Public Health, US. “Diet quality, not quantity, is important for both weight control and long-term well-being,” Willett told The New York Times.
So the next time you have a party with friends, try a light meal. It will satisfy not only your stomachs but maybe also your hearts.

Apples are a common favourite. They’re the finest snack: filling, juicy, crunchy(易碎的), and easy to take along. Studies have even shown that eating three apples per day can help with weight loss.
There are plenty of ways to eat apples: Chow down on a whole apple, add apple pieces to your meal, throw apple balls into a salad, bake some with your chicken, or cook up a low-calorie dessert.
Watermelon is low in calories with high water content. This means you can eat two entire cups of watermelon for less than 100 calories and your stomach will feel like you’ve eaten more because the fruit is more than 90 percent water. This way, you’ll avoid higher-calorie foods and satisfy your sweet tooth.
Raspberries are small but powerful! These babies are low in calories and even lower when you consider that they’re high in indigestible(可消化的) fiber. Raspberries have the highest fiber content of any fruit (1 cup = 8g fiber).
Grapefruit gives you a lot of help for your calorie avoidance. A middle-size grapefruit has only around 80 calories, and like watermelon,it’s more than 90 percent water. Plus, studies have shown that a compound(化合物) in grapefruit called naringin could lower blood sugar and lead to weight loss. So enjoy some grapefruit at every chance—press it into your water, throw some into your salad, or use it like lemon to flavour your food. Keep in mind that eating grapefruit with certain medicine could have harmful influence. If you’re on any prescription(药方), check with your doctor before adding grapefruit to your diet.

The study, published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association, says an enzyme (酶) that metabolizes caffeine in the liver works differently in some people, depending on the makeup of the gene (基因). People who have a slow version (版本) of the enzyme are at a greater risk (风险) of a heart attack when they drink more coffee. The risk had something to do with a person’s age and how many cups of coffee he drinks.
The team from the University of Toronto in Canada studied 4,024 people living in coffeerich Costa Rica between 1994 and 2004, of whom half suffered nonfatal (非致命的) heart attacks. They found slightly more than half had the slow version of the gene, while the rest had the fast form.
Two to three cups of coffee a day increased the possibilities of a heart attack by 36 percent for those with the slowacting gene and four or more cups a day lifted it by 64 percent.
But those under 50 who had the fast version of the gene had a lower risk of heart disease, even with four or more cups a day.
Those with the fastacting gene who drank two to three cups of coffee a day had 22 percent reduced possibilities of having a heart attack, but drinking four or more cups a day only lessened the risk by 1 percent. Scientists recommend limiting coffee consumption (消耗量) to within four cups a day.

“It may prevent the correct understanding of the brain over the amount of food ingested,”said researchers who filmed 62 volunteers eating alone.
The men and women, aged 18 to 28, were invited to help themselves to a choice of food – ranging from healthy options to soft drinks and chocolate – until they were satisfied. In three trials, the volunteers were recorded eating with no distractions, using a smartphone or reading a magazine.
On average, the volunteers ate 535 calories without the distraction of a smartphone but 591 when using a mobile.
Those in the sample who were classed as overweight ate 616 calories while using their phones. When in possession of their mobiles, the volunteers also consumed 10 percent more fatty foods. They also ate more when reading a magazine.
“Smartphone use during a meal increased calorie and fat intake,” said Márcio Gilberto Zangeronimoa, a lead author of the study – carried out at the Federal University of Lavras in Brazil and University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.
He added: “Tablets and smart phones have become the main ‘distracters”’during meals, even early in childhood, so it is important to pay attention to how this may impact food choices.”
“A distracter prevents the brain correctly understanding the amount of food ingested.” The study is published in the journal Physiology And Behavior.

Zhang wants more young people to work in the factories so that China’s manufacturing sector continues to develop well.
Whatever job young people do is a matter of choice, but the manufacturing sector is facing a labor shortage, for too many people prefer jobs in other areas.
A survey conducted by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security in the third quarter of 2021 found that of 100 jobs that were facing a manpower shortage, 58 were in the manufacturing sector. By 2025, the shortage in 10 key manufacturing industries could be as high as 30 million.
It is time some strong measures were taken to attract people back to the factories. This can be done by raising the salaries(薪水)of factory workers.
According to a survey in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, the yearly income of express delivery workers in the city is more than 100,000 yuan($15,831). In contrast, the average monthly salary of those doing blue-collar jobs in Guangdong in 2020 was just 7,108 yuan, or about 84,000 yuan a year. That gap surely needs to be reduced.
Besides, the legal rights and interests of those doing blue-collar jobs need to be better protected. Express delivery workers can decide when they want to work, but factory workers have to work whenever the factory demands.
Therefore, the authorities should protect factory workers’ rights to weekends, 8-hour working schedules and paid leave.
Also, the promotion(晋升)and salary growth structure of factory workers must be clearly planned. In a word, to attract young people back to the factories, it is necessary to make blue-collar jobs more attractive.

Over the years, technical advances have gradually removed the need for the last three, leaving just two pilots. That has been the norm (标准) in commercial aviation for decades.
However, things could be simplified further — one of the two remaining pilots could soon go. Many military aircraft are already manned by a single pilot, and for commercial aviation this would mean stepping into a brave new world.
But how will airlines make this brave innovation come true? One way is to greatly increase automation in the cockpit, devoting more tasks to computers. Another is to shift the same tasks from the cockpit to the ground. “The latter approach seems to be more workable, at least in the short term, because much of what is required already exists,” says Patrick Smith, an airline pilot flying Boeing 767 aircraft. “A trained ground operator could observe a number of flights at once and even fully control the plane remotely if needed.”
It’s true that single-pilot operations could help airlines save money, but there is another reason which makes them quicken their pace for this crucial breakthrough. Boeing predicts a need for 600,000 new pilots in the next two decades, but by some estimates, there will be a deficit (赤字) of at least 34,000 pilots globally by 2025. Reducing the number of pilots on some crews or aircraft could lessen the impact of this.
Perhaps the biggest barrier to a single pilot will be selling the idea to passengers. In 2019, Don Hairis, a professor at Coventry University, conducted a survey on the prospect of flying on an airliner with just one pilot. Just a minority of participants said they’d be willing to take that flight, and the general idea was that removing a pilot increased the possibility of accidents. In the study, Harris concluded that the single-crew airliner would be still probably 20 years away.

But most people enjoy seeing countries that are different from their own. They also like to meet new people and to taste new food.
Tourism causes many changes in a country and in people’s lives. People build new hotels and restaurants and train native men and women as guides to show visitors interesting places. There’re new nightclubs and other amusements. International tourism is clearly a big business.
