Digital citizenship
Everyone’s talking about ‘digital citizenship’, but what is it?
Stay safe
To stay safe, never give your personal information online, such as your address or the name of your school. Make sure that you create strong, secure passwords and keep them secret. Don’t tell your friends your passwords.
Just like in real life, it’s important to behave well online. For example, if you want to post a photo of someone, make sure you ask for their permission first. Remember that everybody can have their own opinion. It’s OK to disagree, but always be polite!
Be kind
Before you post a comment online, stop and think. Is it positive? How will your words make someone feel?
Be careful
Don’t trust everyone or everything online.
Spending time and learning online can be great if we’re good digital citizens. So, be safe, be responsible and have fun!
A.Keep modest |
B.Show respect |
C.Even they are familiar to you |
D.Here are some ways to be safe and responsible online |
E.We use the word ‘digital’ to talk about computer technology |
F.Don’t say something online that you wouldn’t say in real life |
G.Remember that people online are not always who they say they are |

You’ve joined the 4-in-10 adult Americans of all ages who admit they’re not physically active at all, according to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
Exercise experts like Richard Cotton and Cedric Bryant have heard it all before — busy boomers complaining that, between car pools and van pools and making ends meet, they hardly have time for a movie, much less regular exercise. Here are some of their best tips.
Prepare.
Plan your workout wardrobe so you’ll be comfortable. Consider the weather you will be walking in and decide: long pants, long sleeve, shorts, hat?
Don’t skimp (克扣) on shoes.
Which type? “If you are walking with the hope of jogging finally, buy running shoes,” says Cotton. If you plan to walk as your main exercise, get walking shoes.
Start slowly.
“Do much less than you think you are able to,” Cotton suggests. Take a 10-minute walk if you’re newly back to workouts. It’s not enough, “but it’s a start.” Consider walking as a good way to get back to exercise.
Do the talk test.
If you can’t talk without difficulty as you walk or jog, you’re going too fast and trying to do too much, Bryant says.
Consider getting an exercise buddy (同伴).
That could help increase your faithfulness to your new habit. “An exercise partner is always nice”, Cotton says, “especially if you can get someone who already has the habit. That’s a free ride.”
Be realistic about the payoff.
You might notice looser waistbands but no difference on the scale. “As you get up into 35-, 40- or 45-minute walks, you can expect weight loss,” Cotton says. “But even if you do not lose a pound, you are healthier if you exercise.” And quite possibly, that might put you higher up on Bush’s invite list, should he host another run.

Showing up unannounced
This really should go without saying and applies to any type of visit to someone’s home, any time of the year -- don’t show up at someone’s door unannounced, or assume you can stay with them without asking first.
Ignoring house rules
Did your host ask you to leave your outside shoes at the door? Or perhaps they requested that you say something in a low voice after 9 p.m.?
When you’re an overnight guest in a friend or relative’s home, you cannot expect the service of a hotel. Your host is doing you a favor by letting you stay in their home for free, so don’t expect someone to make your bed or clean up after you, meals prepared for you, or to have the run of the place.

The social media company has been involved in a number of content moderation debates this year, from facing international outcry after removing a Vietnam War photo to allowing the spread of fake news on its side.
Facebook has historical relied mostly on users to report offensive posts, which are then checked by Facebook employees against company “community standards” . Decisions are especially troublesome content issues that might require policy changes are made by top executives of the company.
Candela told reporters that Facebook was increasingly to using artificial intelligence to find offensive material. It is “an algorithm (算法) that detects violence, or any of the things that are not according to our policies”, he said.
The company already had been working on using automation to flag extremist video content as Reuters reported in June. Now the automated system also is being tested on Facebook Live, the streaming video service for users to broadcast live video.
Using artificial intelligence to flag live video is still at the research stage and has two challenges, Candela said. “One, your computer vision algorithm has to be fast, and I think we can push there, and the other one is you need to prioritize (优先区分) things in the right way so that a human looks at it, an expert who understands our policies, and takes it down.”
Facebook said it also uses automation to process the tens of millions of reports it gets each week, to recognize copied reports and route the flagged content to reviewers with appropriate subject matter expertise.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg in November said Facebook would turn to automation as part of a plan to identify fake news. Ahead of the Nov. 8 U.S. election, Facebook users sulfate saw fake news reports incorrectly declaring that Pope Francis supported Donald Trump and that a federal agent who had been investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton was found dead.
However, determining whether a particular command is hateful or bullying, for example requires context, the company said.
Yann LeCun, Facebook’s director of AI research, declined to comment on using AI to detect fake news, but said generally news feed improvements provoked questions on how to access the content. “These are questions that go away beyond whether we can develop AI.” said LeCun.

But as technology has continued its high-speed advance and growth at all costs, many companies and the products they create have long been skirting (回避) adequate data and privacy protection, leaving users at risk. For example, the audiobook reader you give to your children to send them to sleep at night now captures data on what they like.
As we continue to integrate (整合) the Internet into more of our devices and cover our homes and lives with cameras, microphones and trackers, the lack of data protection and privacy is becoming dangerous. Very few companies are being honest about how they collect, store and use data, and the only loser is the very individuals who use these products.
But that, right there, is the one chance consumers have to turn the tide (扭转局势).
The change starts with us. Buying a small device isn’t simply buying a product any more; it’s a conscious decision about whether you trust the company behind it to work in your best interests and keep you safe. It’s your responsibility as a consumer to be aware of this choice and act on it. In an ideal future, it won’t require hours of research — whether done by the buyer or by organizations — to buy safe, responsible products. But for now, it’s the best option available as these companies continue to get a free pass.
We can demand more. We must demand more. We can demand that privacy and security be taken seriously by the companies who build the products we buy. Yes, technology has vastly improved our lives, but that shouldn’t come at the cost of our safety. So if you want to give someone a gift, give them the gift of privacy. It’s the only way to make the Internet — and our lives — a little safer in this digital world.
1. What does the writer try to tell us in the first paragraph?A.Gift-buying nowadays is much more complicated. |

“You can choose to do things differently when you’re a parent,” I told him. But sometimes, I wonder if I’m being too stubborn or unfair.
The more I research, the more confident I feel in my decision. Many studies link the current mental health crisis among adolescents to fundamental changes in how they socialize, namely, the shift from in-person to online interaction.
But other mothers challenge my view. “He must feel so left out!” Then there are the parents who tell me sadly that they wish they had delayed their teenager’s phone ownership longer than they did. They urge me to hold out.
If teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are truly spending an average of 8 hours 39 minutes per day on their devices, as stated in a survey conducted by Common Sense Media, then what are they not doing? Kids absorbed in their devices are missing out on real life, and that strikes me as really sad.
I want my son to have a childhood he feels satisfied with and proud of. I want it to be full of adventures, imaginative play and physical challenges which he must sort out himself without asking me for help. The easiest and simplest way to achieve these goals is to delay giving him a smartphone.
Some think my son is missing out or falling behind, but he is not. He does well in school and extra-curricular activities, hangs out with his friends in person, and moves independently around our small town. He promises he’ll give his own 14-year-old a phone someday, and I tell him that’s fine. But recently, he admitted that he missed the beautiful scenery on a drive to a nearby mountain because he had been so absorbed in his friend’s iPad. If that is his version of admitting I’m right, I’ll take it.
1. What does the underlined phrase “pushes back” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.Agrees. | B.Delays. | C.Opposes. | D.Persuades. |
A.Her son’s online safety. |
B.Her son’s mental growth. |
