Researchers in Finland found students' reading skills improved more between first grade and third grade if they didn't eat a lot of sugary foods or red meat, and if their diet consisted mainly of vegetables, berries and other fruits, as well as fish, whole grains and unsaturated(不饱和的) fats.
The researchers observed 161 Finnish students. They were between the ages of 6 and 8(first grade to third grade). The researchers reviewed the children's diets and their reading ability using food diaries and standardized reading tests. A healthier diet was associated with better reading skills by third grade, regardless of how well the students could read in first grade, the researchers said.
“Another significant observation is that the associations of diet quality with reading skills were also independent of many other factors, such as socioeconomic status, physical activity, body fat and physical fitness,” said Eero Haapala, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Eastern Finland and the University of Jyvaskyla.
Does that mean parents of picky eaters should be concerned about their child’s reading abilities? Not necessarily. Although this study found an association between the foods young children ate and their reading skills, it didn't prove cause-and-effect. Still, the researchers said parents, schools, governments and corporations all have an opportunity to enhance academic performance in schools by making healthy foods more available to children.

Scientists now believe that willpower alone is not enough to lose weight. They say success depends on your genes, hormones (荷尔蒙) and psychology.
A study of 75 people by BBC Science and Oxford and Cambridge Universities has looked into why one-size-fits-all diets are often not successful. The scientists divided over-eaters into three groups—people who feast, people who constantly crave food and emotional eaters. They tailored (定制) diets to the needs of each group.
Feasters can’t stop eating once they start. This is because they don’t have the hormones that tell them when they are full. Scientists designed a diet for this group paying special attention to high protein foods that make them feel full for a long time. This included fish, chicken, basmati rice and grains. Bread and potatoes were not allowed because they do not fill you up for long.
Constant cravers always feel hungry. Scientists say that certain genes stop the messages the stomach sends to the brain saying it is full, meaning the cravers always feel like they need more fatty, sugary food. Dieting seven days a week is very hard for these people, so scientists put them on a normal, healthy diet five days a week, and eating whenever they feel stressed. To help them change this behaviour, scientists offered them group support in meetings and online as well as a diet.
During the study, people from all three groups lost weight on the tailored diets, with feasters losing the most and constant cravers losing the least.
So what about you? If any of the eating habits sound familiar, perhaps you should consider a new approach to slimming for now.
1. What is the solution that scientists suggest for feasters?

A Singapore-based team of researchers said regular physical activity “improves physical and mental health, lowers the risks and effects of chronic (慢性的) diseases, and reduces falls, dependency and death rate among older adults”.
The team randomly asked adults to complete cognitive (认知的) function tests as well as activities to assess their physical abilities, such as standing up from a chair as quickly as they could. Participants were also tested on their levels of physical activity, including the amount of housework they did, and were assessed for their risk of having a fall based on measures such as knee extension strength. Most of those who reported doing high levels of heavy or light housework were women. After taking age and sex into account, the team found cognitive scores and attention scores were 8% and 14% higher respectively for older adults doing high amounts of heavy housework, compared with low levels. Sit-to-stand times were lower for older adults reporting high amounts of heavy housework compared with low amounts, while they were also assessed as being at lower risk of having a fall.
Gill Livingston, professor of psychiatry (精神病学) of older people, who was not involved in the work, said the study was interesting but had little meaning as people who are not so well may be expected to do less housework. “I think the advice would be that housework can be good exercise, which is good for your heart and brain. We cannot draw any conclusions from this study that it is specifically protective,” she said.
1. What is the benefit of regular physical activity for adults?A.To provide a cure for chronic diseases. |
B.To promote their health and wellbeing. |
C.To prevent them from accidents or death. |
D.To help them to become socially adaptable. |

In new legislation (立法) expected to take hold next year, no cigarettes or tobacco products will be available for people to purchase legally in the country. That means anyone who is 14 as of today will never be allowed to buy them in New Zealand. The four-year Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan hopes to reduce rates of smoking for older people while completely banning sales for the younger population.
Associate health minister Dr. Ayesha Verall, who announced the government’s plan, said the country is concentrating on a “smoke-free generation” with this legislation. “We want to make sure young people never start smoking so we will make it an offense to sell or supply smoked tobacco products to new population of youth.” said Verall in a statement.
The move comes as New Zealand’s health ministry pursues a large-scale crackdown (打压) on tobacco in the country. In April 2021, the country’s parliament announced its goal of being smoke free by 2025, arming to slowly reduce phase out, then entirely cut the prosper of smoking. There are already existing barriers to tobacco products in New Zealand, including high taxes and plain packaging on cigarettes.
“Clinical studies have shown that dramatically reducing nicotine levels in cigarettes makes at far easier for people to quit.” said Verall in parliament. “So the action plan will see New Zealand transition to low-nicotine cigarettes. This is a major change but it is based on clinical research and it is realistic, because with vapes (电子烟) widely available, there is a far less harmful option available for smokers who are addicted to nicotine. While vapes were introduced as a way to reduce cigarette consumption, they remain harmful according to research Vapes are also particularly appealing to young people, who have long been the target people for the product.

While exercise plays a role in weight control, the other side of the coin is food intake.
The other potential explanation comes down to the amount of blood. When you do aerobic exercise, there may be an increase in blood volume, which is essentially an increase in aerobic capacity. Aerobic capacity is a measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen your body can consume while exercising. Muscles need oxygen supplied by blood.
What all of this means is that people who have started to work out properly shouldn’t be discouraged from continuing, even if they gain a little weight.
A.You should do exercise. |
B.The answer is many-sided. |
C.A person notices his weight increasing. |
D.When they eat pizza, they’re eating slowly. |
E.This in turn leads to extra water staying in the body. |
F.There are a few other biological reasons for the weight gain. |
G.So the more oxygen a person can consume, the better their strength. |
