Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. She says, “ While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain.”
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results.
Older people can beef up (加强) their brain as well. Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of seniors ranging in age from 70 to 79. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 per cent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for seniors should involve some complexity (复杂). Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or Tai Ji, helps open up memory paths in the brain that may not have used for a long time.
For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as three hours of exercise a week.

Hailing from Sweden, “plogging” is a fitness craze that sees participants pick up plastic litter while jogging — adding a virtuous, environmentally driven element to the sport.
Plogging appears to have started around 2016, but is now going global, due to increasing awareness and fear over plastic levels in the ocean.
The appeal of plogging is its simplicity, and the feeling of getting fit while supporting a good cause. By adding regular squats and carrying weight to jogging, we can assume the health benefits are increased.
Running and good causes have always gone hand in hand — just think of all the fundraising marathon runners do. But there couldn’t be a more on-trend way of keeping fit than plogging.
“Anything that’s getting people out in nature and connecting positively with their environment is a good thing,” says Lizzie Carr, an environmentalist who helped set up Plastic Patrol, a nationwide campaign to rid our inland waterways of plastic pollution. “There’s been a real shift in the public mindset around plastics, helped by things like Blue Planet high lighting how catastrophic the crisis is,” she says. “We need to keep momentum high and the pressure up, and empower people through initiatives like plogging and Plastic Patrol.”
The Plastic Patrol app allows users to map plastic anywhere in the world by collecting discarded items, photographing them and uploading to the app, giving us a better knowledge of what sorts of plastic and which brands are being thrown out. “I’d urge all ploggers to get involved,” adds Carr. As we can see, plogging has become a new fashion in 2018. However, plogging isn’t the first fitness trend to combine running with a good cause.

Frightened by the thought that she was having a heart attack, Anne screamed for help. Her husband immediately rushed Anne to a nearby hospital where her pains were diagnosed as having been caused by panic, and not a heart attack.
More and more Americans nowadays are having panic attacks like the one experienced by Anne Peters. Studies discover that approximately 1.2 million adult individuals are currently suffering from severe and recurrent panic attacks.
There have been a lot of explanations as to the causes of panic attacks. Many claim that psychological stress could be a logical cause, but as yet, no evidence has been found to support this theory. Recent reports have shown there are at least three signs that indicate a person is suffering from a panic attack rather than a heart attack. The first is age. People between the ages of 20 and 30 are more often victims of panic attacks. The second is sex. More women suffer from recurrent panic attacks than men. The third is the variety of symptoms. A heart attack victim often experiences only pain and shortness of breath while a panic attack victim usually suffers more symptoms than the two mentioned.
It is generally agreed that a panic attack does not directly endanger a person’s life. All the same, it can negatively affect a person’s life by making him or her so afraid of having a panic attack at a public place that he or she may refuse to leave home. Dr. Crocker’s advice to anyone who thinks he is suffering from a panic attack is to consult a doctor for a medical examination to rule out the possibilities of physical illness first. Once it has been confirmed that he or she is, in fact, suffering from a panic attack, the victim should turn to psychologists and doctors.

Anders Ericsson claims that with enough practice, any of us can become experts. However, he is quick to add that this requires a specific kind of practice that Ericsson calls ‘deliberate practice’: that is, pushing beyond one’s comfort zone and setting goals that are above one’s current level of performance. He says he has yet to find the limits on being successful and he doesn’t believe them to be real.
Ericsson has looked primarily at artistic and athletic skills, but can these findings apply to creativity? Most experts agree that even if most people cannot hope to become creative geniuses, they can learn to become more creative through practice. Psychologists claim that there are actually two levels of creativity, which they refer to as’Big C’ and ‘small c’. Big C creativity applies to breakthrough ideas, ones that may change the course of a field or even history. Small c creativity refers to everyday creative problem solving, like creating a new recipe or improving a process, which psychologists subdivide further into similar and different thinking. Similar thinking involves examining all the facts and arriving at a single solution. In contrast, different thinking involves coming up with many possible solutions. What most people think of as creativity generally involves different thinking and can be taught, practised and learnt.
Even with practice, different thinking alone cannot make one creative, however. Scott Barry Kaufman, a cognitive psychologist, says that most creative people share one personality quality: openness to new experience. Since this quality and these processes have been identified, less creative people can try to emulate them. Normally, we tend to reproduce what we already know because creative ideas move us into unfamiliar territory involving risks and following the usual behaviors is comfortable.
Moving outside of our comfort zone, engaging indeliberate practice and tolerating contradictory ideas, risk and failure are all things we can learn to do better. It is unlikely that doing so will transform any of us into creative geniuses, but it does have the potential to increase our level of creativity.

With the coming of new technologies like computers and smart phones, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic(怀旧的) skill. However, while today's educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful - both in school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it's important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Beminger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks - both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2019, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study, Beminger looked at what role spelling plays in a student's writing skills. ”Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us gain our vocabulary word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Beminger said.
“Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to translate those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “mind's eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Bemninger, but also to find spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time. “In our computer age, some people believe that we don't have to teach spelling because we have spell checks," she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won't have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer. "

Crazy Rich Asians, adapted from Singaporean-American author Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel of the same name, has become a surprisingly successful Hollywood movie and a hot topic on social media.
Without doubt, the film is a rare US film with an all-Asian actors, full of Asian elements, such as characters playing mahjong or using red decorations at a wedding. It could be said that Crazy Rich Asians reflects a new trend in Hollywood for multiculturalism(多元化). Just like fans who praised Black Panther(2018) for featuring African characters, those from Asia now have role models of their own in a Hollywood movie.
However, when we take a closer look at the film, we can see that it’s clearly produced for a Western audience. The film is about the funny story of Chinese-American professor Rachel Chu and her rich Singaporean boyfriend Nick Young and his family. According to The Paper, although the movie throws light on Asian culture, it is still a display of American values, instead of those of Asian people. It still can’t help showing the cultural traditions and lifestyle of the US. The romance story even finds its roots in Disney fairy tales. In the movie, the large houses and the fancy parties represent the lives seen in movies like The Great Gatsby (2013) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).
“There are a lot of people who don’t relate to that…of course there will be lot of fain criticism(批评) about the fact that it doesn’t fully represent the entire population,” wrote Penelope Poulou of VOA News.
According to Psychology Today, the film is “not an accurate(准确的) description of most Asians nor is it meant to be”. So, although Crazy Rich Asians doesn’t completely break stereotypes(刻板印象) of Asian people, it’s still a small step in the right direction. And while it’s encouraging to see a movie about Asian people made for a Western audience, it’s obvious that there’s still a long way to go.
1. What can we learn about Crazy Rich Asians?A.It was on show in 2013. |
B.It is adapted from a TV series. |

For thousands of years, a very important building in any British village has been the pub. In fact, until a place has a pub, it is not really considered a community worthy of a name. Traditionally, the pub is at the heart of any village or town, since it is where people gather to socialize and exchange news. It is an institution at the heart of British society. After all, the word “pub” is actually short for “public house”.
As a result, British pubs are often old and well preserved. Many of them have become historic sites that tourists visit. Many British pubs have names referring to monarchs, such as The King's Head or The Queen Victoria, but of course this doesn't mean they are only for kings and queens. Pubs have always welcomed people from all classes and parts of society. On a cold night, the pub boss can always find a warm place for customers by the fire. There is always honest and hearty food and plenty of drink available at an affordable price.
That's how it used to be, but there are worrying signs that things are beginning to change. Economic downturns, governmental austerity measures and cultural changes are causing many pubs to go out of business. People do not have a lot of spare money to spend on beer. On top of that, in 2007 smoking was banned in all public indoor spaces, including pubs, which may also have affected the number of customers going to pubs since then. This decline is happening despite the fact that pubs are now allowed by law to stay open after 11p.m..
In order to save their businesses, pubs are trying to diversify to attract new customers. And with various “save the pub” campaigns, there are signs that people are gathering around pubs to support this great British institution with pride.
1. Why are British pubs often old?A.Because the British want to attract tourists. |
B.Because the birth of a community often results from a pub in it. |
C.Because they are where people socialize and exchange news. |

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet reflection, nor are they reading a book. New technology has replaced quiet habits. Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.
Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters (乘车上下班的人). Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000—yes, that’s 40,000—“apps” (programs downloaded for the iPhone) have been designed.
Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers. One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks. Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination. ISteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “steam” on your phone screen.
For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be another choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music — iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.
And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you engaged, then perhaps you would prefer a film. The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV show or film on the way to work. With all these entertainments, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.
