It doesn’t matter when and how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.

Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw him sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.

The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure.

Herpin died at the age of 94.

【推荐1】If you want to keep healthy, you should have good habits. What is a habit? It is something we do very often. We don’t even think when we do it. It has become a part of our lives.
“Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” This is an old English saying. Do you know what it means? It means that we must go to bed early at night and get up early in the morning. If we do, we shall be healthy, rich and clever.
Is this true? Perhaps it is. We know the body must have enough sleep. Boys and girls need eight or nine hours’ sleep every day.
Some people go to bed late at night and get up late in the morning. This is a very bad habit. Then you will not think or do your work well. Of course, you can’t be healthy, wealthy or wise.
When we get up early in the morning, we can go out and do morning exercises. Exercise means doing things with the body. Walking, running jumping, swimming, and playing ball games are all exercise. If we don’t exercise, our body will become weak.
Exercise helps the blood (血液) to move around inside our body. Blood takes food to all parts of our body.
Our body also needs air to breathe. Without air, we will die. We must have lots of clean fresh air if we want to be healthy. That is why many people like to go out to do morning exercise.

【推荐2】Three Simple Tricks Improve Your Mornings

Most people are familiar with the feeling of being torn out of heavy sleep by the sound of their alarm clock. But why do we feel fresh and fully rested some mornings, while on other days we barely have the energy to turn off the alarm clock?

Scientists have carried out a study of 833 adults. The results show that we can control how fresh we feel in the morning if we follow three simple pieces of advice.

As in the sleep research, the test subjects wore special watches that monitored their physical activity and the quantity and quality of their sleep. They were also served different breakfasts, and then through the day the scientists monitored their blood glucose (葡萄糖) levels while those who took part in the research kept a chart of their energy levels through the day. Many of the subjects were twins, helping to rule out genetic differences.

The data showed that the secret behind energetic mornings is a three-stage solution made up of plenty of exercise the previous day, enough sleep, and then the right breakfast.

One researcher explains that each of these three factors are important ingredients if you want to wake up feeling fresh and fully rested—and able to continue feeling relatively energetic for the rest of the day. “If you sleep more than you usually do, you will feel more awake,” he explains. “If you are more physically active the previous day, you get the same effect. Both factors cause improvement.”

The worst breakfast proved to be food with high sugar content; this made those who took part in the research feel sleepy and low on energy for the rest of the day. The best way to start a new day was to eat breakfast with a high content of whole grains and vegetables.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the quantity of sleep was also a key factor in mood. The results proved that 7—9 hours of sleep are necessary to shake off morning sleepiness.

Scientists do not yet know why exercise seems to improve our awareness and ability to wake up re-energized. But they stress that exercise is an important key to our health and mood in general.
