My Dad’s Best Flower

I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony. When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was absent, she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations(康乃馨) in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.

He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many ties I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation attentively like a doctor.

My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in again of barley (插穗的芽).Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch them,” he said to Mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.

Mom used to tell us, “Do not touch Daddy’s flowers.” For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

It was a cold winter evening, I was terrified that my mom would find out that I had lost the beautiful silver flute (长笛) she bought me. I felt very sad and I thought that she had given me a big lecture about how valuable it was and that I had to take good care of it. Now it was missing! And I felt very upset. I was only ten at the time, so it felt like a huge responsibility. So I didn’t dare tell my mum about it, I didn’t think my mum would pay attention to my flute.

Mum was a soft-spoken woman who never yelled at me, but she would surely have docked (扣除) my allowance (零花钱) for a year or two in order to pay for it if I couldn’t find it and she discovered that my flute was lost. The worst punishment, though, would have been disappointing her and being forever regarded as an unreliable person.

As I was in the band, I would take the flute to school twice and bring it home after practice. That day, I normally remembered collecting it after school and then I rushed through the school gate, I even said bye to the guard. But when I returned home and wanted to take my flute for practice, it was nowhere to be found.

Being afraid to tell anyone, I kept thinking to myself   “I’d be in big trouble if I lost it. What should I do?”

Just then, I heard my mum’s calling, “Sweetie, dinner is ready!”

“Okay, wait a minute, I…am …coming…” I replied as I slowly stepped out of my bed-room, my mind was still back in the state of searching for my flute.

When having dinner, I could hardly focus with my eyes. Although I tried to pretend to be calm, my mum still noticed it.

“What is the matter with you, sweetie?” my mum asked.

Hearing what she said, I had to tell her the truth.

Jack was a reserved (内向的) child who was often isolated at school. He used to suffer a lot. Seldom did he discuss anything in and after class, nor did he consult with his teacher. It seemed that he was more fond of immersing himself in his own world, However, his classmates didn’t understand his quietness and interests and often deliberately didn’t invite him to take part in activities. But in reality, Jack felt very lonely and longed to interact with others but didn’t know how to break down the barriers. He was eager to turn to someone for help.

Sadly, Jack’s parents were too occupied with daily chores to notice the change in him as he became quieter and more distant. Even when Jack picked up his courage to share his feelings, he was simply comforted by words like, “Go and get it. We know you can do it.”

However, Jack was at a total loss to pull himself out. At home, he had no alternative but to play his favorite jigsaw (拼图) puzzle in silence and avoided interacting with anyone. He began to wonder if he was doing something wrong and if he really wasn’t cut out to make friends and could never express himself properly. He felt sad and started not to associate with others.

Luckily, Jack’s class teacher noticed his predicament (窘境) and decided to step in to help. The teacher organized a class project after a math test, which seemed quite demanding for most students but not for Jack. The teacher required the students to work together in groups to solve the problems of their own and then he would invite someone to present his or her critical ideas on behalf of the group. The teacher then purposely placed Jack in a disadvantaged group and encouraged him to show his strengths. To the teacher’s credit, Jack didn’t let him down.

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.

As I was walking down empty streets under tall buildings, there was a cold damp wind blowing off the sea which nearly threw me off my feet and I felt very small and cold. I began to run to keep warm and to keep away from possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.

About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, being afraid to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty and the only living thing I could see was a frightened cat outside a small restaurant. Even so, the noise still had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.

Suddenly, I didn't feel cold and tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, I couldn't find my wallet anywhere. My tears broke free when I realized my wallet might be gone forever.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Just as I was about to give up, I heard a garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me.
