One is that we earn more, so time feels more expensive. Then there’s the way we’ve come to see busyness as a status symbol: important people are busy, so we want to be busy, too. Add to that the flood of incoming emails and texts, along with the endless ocean of possibilities, and it’s easy to see where time goes.
A second factor is the comparison we make between what we can do and what others are doing, making us anxious.
We’re also addicted to our devices. In 2007, the amount of leisure time we spent on devices like smart-phones could be measured in minutes. Now, we spend on average 3.5 hours a day online.
You might be wondering why you need help deciding how to spend your free time — after all you know the sort of things you enjoy, so what could be so difficult? Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has a surprising opinion on it. “The popular assumption is that no skills are involved in enjoying free time, anybody can do it. Yet the evidence suggests the opposite; free time is more difficult to enjoy than work.” Worryingly, scientists have found that people are often no happier after a holiday than if they’d never taken one.
A.So we try to push back the tide and keep up by multi-tasking. |
B.No wonder people say they’re too busy to see friends, exercise or sleep. |
C.Would it surprise you to hear that we have more leisure time today than ever? |
D.How can we learn to spend time in a way that’s more likely to lead to happiness and success? |
E.It’s something that economist have been puzzling over and they’ve identified several reasons. |
F.Then you will have fewer empty experiences and far ore that are worthy of your precious time. |
G.This is something sociologists call “polluted time”. |

In all one’s life time it is oneself that one spends the most time being with or dealing with.
When you are going upwards in life you tend to overestimate (高估) yourself. It seems that everything you seek for is within your reach.
Gain a correct view of oneself. You may look forward hopefully to the future but be sure not to expect too much, for dreams can never be fully realized. You may be courageous to meet challenges but it should be clear to you where to direct your efforts.
Self-appreciate. Whether you compare yourself to a towering tree or a blade of grass, a high mountain or a small stone, you represent a state of nature.
Get a full control of one’s life. Then one will find one’s life full of color1 and flavor.
A.But it is precisely oneself that one has the least understanding of. |
B.As long as you have a perfect knowledge of yourself, there won’t be difficulties you can’t overcome. |
C.When you are going downhill you tend to underestimate yourself for your own incompetence. |
D.It has its own value. |
E.Especially if it is well within your reach, you are just too blind to see it. |
F.Do oneself a favor when it’s needed. |
G.Do yourself a favor when you resist the attack of illness. |

Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment. The “eco-guilt” brought on by the discouraging news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting worldviews.
Perhaps that explains why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much publicity. That book, The Skeptical Environmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state of the world” as fine. Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets of some big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lomborg’s views are similar to those of some industry–funded organizations, which start huge activities through the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.
So it was strange to see Mr. Lomborg’s book go largely unchallenged in the media though his beliefs were contrary to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the conclusion that “After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to die down.”
Such one–sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lomborg’s “preference for unexamined materials is incredible”.
A critical eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, that is often inaccessible as blocked by the desire to be shocking or to defend some special interests. People might become half-blind before a world partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters concerning the health of the planet are far too important to be treated lightly.
1. Which of the following can be a reason for the popularity of Lomborg’s book?A.The book challenges views about the fine state of the world. |
B.The author convinces people to speak comforting worldviews. |
C.Industry-funded media present confusing information. |
D.Some big businesses intend to protect their own interests. |
A.voice a different opinion |
B.find fault with Lomborg’s book |
C.point out the value of scientific views |
D.challenge the authority of the media |
A.wrong | B.reliable | C.wise | D.careless |
A.To warn the public of the danger of half-blindness with reviews. |
B.To show the importance of presenting overall information by the media. |
C.To blame the media’s lack of responsibility in information. |
D.To encourage the skeptics to have a critical eye. |

There’s a welcome familiarity - but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don’t change, people do. And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.
The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all about the present. It’s about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.
There are three books I reread annually .The first, which I take to reading every spring is Emest Hemningway’s A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的),an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortazar’s Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortazar.
While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifs, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it’s you that has to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.
1. Why does the author like rereading?A.It evaluates the writer-reader relationship. |
B.It’s a window to a whole new world. |
C.It’s a substitute for drinking with a friend. |
D.It extends the understanding of oneself. |
A.It’s a brief account of a trip. |
B.It’s about Hemingway’s life as a young man. |
C.It’s a record of a historic event. |
D.It’s about Hemingway’s friends in Paris. |
A.Debt |
B.Reward. |
C.Allowance. |
D.Face value. |
A.He loves poetry. |
B.He’s an editor. |
C.He’s very ambitious. |
D.He teaches reading. |
