On the day he almost died, Kimbal Musk had food on the brain. The Internet startup talent and restaurateur had just arrived in Jackson Hole from a conference where chef Jamie Oliver had spoken about the benefits of healthy eating. This was something Musk thought about a lot—how he might make a difference to the food industry—but beyond expanding his farm-to-table movement along with his restaurant, Musk hadn't yet broken the code. Then he went sailing down a snowy slope(坡) and fell over, breaking his neck. The left side of his body was paralyzed.
Musk eventually made a full recovery, but it involved spending two months on his back, which gave him plenty of time to come up with a plan. Since then, he has launched an initiative to put "learning gardens" in public schools across America; attracted Generation Z to the farming profession by changing shipping containers into high-tech, data-driven, year-round farms; and this year, is kicking off a new campaign to create one million at-home gardens.
Aimed at reaching low-income families, the Million Gardens Movement was inspired by the pandemic, as both a desire to feel more connected to nature and food insecurity have been at the forefront of so many people's lives. "We were getting a lot of inquiries about gardening from people that had never gardened before," says Musk. "People were looking to garden for a bunch of reasons: to supplement their budget, to improve the nutritional quality of their diets, or just to cure the boredom that came with the lockdown."
The program offers free garden kit s that can be grown indoors or outdoors, and will be distributed through schools that Musk's non-profit, Big Green, has already partnered with. It also offers free courses on how to get the garden growing and fresh seeds and materials for the changing growing seasons. "I grew up in the projects when I was young, in what we now call food deserts," says EVE, one of the many celebrities who have teamed up with the organization to encourage people to pick up a free garden. "What I love about this is that it's not difficult. We are all able to grow something."

Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with the delicious foods. With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don't have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you.
Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast, have a small, low-fat snack. This may help to keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods. Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full .Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough. Better not have high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them. Choose lean meat. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. If you have a sweet tooth , try mints (薄荷) and fruits .They don't have fat content as cream and chocolate. Don't let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off excess calories.

It’s true that consuming fewer fats can help you get slim sooner, but low - fat foods like dried fruits, nuts, beans, etc., actually contain a large number of calories. For example, fruit juice contains no fat, but has high calories, so drinking more than one glass of fruit juice won’t help in losing weight.
To rely only on fruit and vegetable juice to lose weight is also a wrong method. By replacing your meals with only juice, you decrease the calorie intake greatly. It’ll help lose weight, but it can make you lack energy, leading to headaches, stomach disorders, etc.
It’s true that exercise helps to keep healthy weight, but it’ll probably not help you much if you don’t take care of your diet by reducing your calorie intake. If you believe you can exercise every day and eat as much as you want, you’re incorrect. For healthy weight loss, you need to burn more calories than you consume. So, you need to limit the intake of food.
Wrong weight loss methods are dangerous. So if in doubt, you’d better ask a doctor before starting weight loss. Luckily, it’s possible to lose weight with healthy methods. For example, follow healthy food habits, exercise regularly for 20 - 30 minutes every day, and go on with a healthy lifestyle even after you successfully lose weight.
Anyway, as you don’t gain weight overnight, it can’t be lost in a short time either. Give yourself some time. Although healthy methods may take a bit longer to work, they’re surely good for your body.

The boy had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from an inborn brain disease that often causes balance disturbances.
When he got home, McLindon, now 60, went online and found a three-wheel bike with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance issues. Soon the boy was riding around the street with his peers, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more, as McLindon learned from his friend’s reaction. “I’ll never forget the smile on his face,” McLindon says, “when he sees his son interacting with other kids.”
That smile launched the McLindon Family Foundation. Funded by donations, the group works with the Children’s Rehab Clinic to find children who can benefit from owning an adaptive bike — and to help make each bike to the particular needs of the child. A bike may include a headrest, a shoulder support, a seatbelt, and a caregiver’s steering and brake. For kids lucky enough to get one, they’re a life changer.
“We worked with a 14-year-old who has spina bifida,” says McLindon. “She spent most days on the couch watching TV. Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-needs triathlons (铁人三项比赛). In a magazine interview, she said, ‘I always knew there was an athlete in me.’”
So far, the foundation has given away 450 bikes, and that’s just a start. “I do a lot of things. I run a lot of companies,” Mc Lindon says. “But getting these kids their bikes is the most important thing that I do.”

As a stuntman in movies and television shows, Deadrick admits he’s no stranger to getting hurt. He has suffered broken bones, bled, gotten knocked out and nearly fallen to death, but he considers himself lucky to be alive after some of the stunts he has performed.
Deadrick has been a stunt coordinator(协调员) for the Nickelodeon channel for 12 years. He has worked with famous actors, directors and producers, and he has travelled all over the world. But that doesn’t mean his work is easy.
It took him years of hard work to get where he is today. Deadrick’s father, Vince Deadrick Sr., was also a stuntman, but his family connection didn’t give Deadrick a free pass into the movie business. He learned from his dad how to set up cardboard boxes and fall mats for high falls, and he started training on his own once he decided to follow in his father's footsteps.
As a stunt coordinator, Deadrick takes danger seriously. When he hires a new stunt performer, he looks for a professional(专业人士).
“You’re only as good as the people you hire,” he says. A stuntman needs to know his own abilities and limitations so he won’t shy away from doing his best but also won’t be such a daredevil(铤而走险的人) that he could hurt himself or others.
When the actors and stuntmen are going to do something dangerous, they need to know they’re trusting the right person. With over 40 years in the business, Deadrick is an expert at making stunts both realistic and safe.
Though he has a large amount of responsibility, Deadrick loves his job.
“I’m in a position where I have to make decisions on risk factors, keeping the actors and stuntmen safe while still making it look impressive. I love my business, and I love the excitement.”

【推荐3】Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents’ home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hate confinement and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They’d get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons.
We eventually arrived at my parents’ doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.
Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of a journey—and the best part of yourself.

However, for her random act of kindness, Estrada was awarded the Hummingbird Medal-Bronze for her bravery, loyalty and devotion to Trinidad and Tobago on Monday, September 24, when the country celebrated its 42nd year as a republic. President Paula-Mae Weeks presented the national award to her.
In July of this year, Estrada along with two friends went to the Marianne Beach to relax. Upon leaving the beach, Estrada and her friends noticed a man struggling in the water. As I reflect on the action I took, I felt as though I could help this person as I have the proper training. The week before the incident I participated in a basic life support-training course offered by the North Central Regional Health Authority.” Estrada explained. She said she intends to continue assisting people.
The national award receiver also had this message for the youths of Trinidad and Tobago.

Cheng Shining, a junior of Central China Normal University in Wuhan, was responsible for collecting and distributing supplies for quarantined people and medical staff. As the youngest volunteer at this site, he also chose to live there so that he could show up whenever he was needed.
One day Cheng and two other volunteers spent more than 3 hours moving all 1,462 boxes of mineral water to storage with 50 firemen’s help. Cheng says, “A single person’s strength is limited, but we know the whole country is helping us.”
Cheng was a volunteer for the Military World Games held in Wuhan last October. Instead, he pulls over, grabs his bag stocked with medical supplies, and asks the person, “Is there anything your pet can use?”
For nearly a decade, Stewart has volunteered to help pets of the homeless in California. Stewart never expected this to become his life' s calling. It goes back to the Great Recession, when he was working as a veterinarian at an animal shelter and was astonished by the number of stray animals (流浪动物)who needed help.
Sometimes when he offers to help a pet, he's turned down by homeless people who suspect his motives. But when they do accept his help, everything changes.
Stewart remembered an experience with a man named Mike and his dog who was going blind. Mike had cancer but said to Stewart, “I would much sooner have you help her if you could than be cured of my cancer. "Stewart relieved the dog's painful condition with treatments, for which the man was extremely grateful.
While he's heard comments that homeless people shouldn't have pets, Stewart doesn't share that opinion because he's seen the benefits both to people and the animals themselves. “They offer hope to each other and that is the power of pet companionship,” he said.
Stewart hopes to challenge prejudice (偏见)against homeless people through a TV show, in which he stars, called “The Street Vet”.
Out on the streets, the most common illnesses Stewart sees are infections. In the past, he would pay for it out of his own pocket. Still, costs add up, so he started crowdfunding (众筹) last fall. Inspired by his efforts, the fundraising site GoFundMe named him the February GoFundMe Hero.
Stewart has no intention (打算) of slowing down. “I don't plan on stopping anytime as long as I have the strength to do it, ” he said.
