Going to college is a new experience full of excitement of the unknown. Socialization is a big thing for college students and it is common to feel a little uncomfortable going into a situation where everyone is a stranger. You may probably miss your friends from high school.
You may find you have lots of things in common with your roommate, but even if you are completely different from each other, with a little effort and understanding the two of you may become best friends.
▲If you leave your door open, this shows that you welcome visitors. As a result people will naturally stop in and say hello. 【推荐3】Choking happens when an object lodges in the throat or windpipe blocking the flow of air. In adults, a piece of food is usually to blame. Young children often choke on small objects. Choking is life-threatening. It cuts off oxygen to the brain. Give first aid as quickly as possible if you or someone else is choking.
Watch for these signs of choking:
● One or both hands clutched to the throat
● A look of panic, shock or confusion
● Inability to talk
● Strained or noisy breathing
● Squeaky sounds when trying to breathe
● Cough, which may either be weak or forceful
● Skin, lips and nails that change color turning blue or gray
● Loss of consciousness
If a choking person can cough forcefully, let the person keep coughing.
Coughing might naturally remove the stuck object.
If a person can’t cough, talk, cry or laugh forcefully, give first aid to the person.
The American Red Cross recommends the following steps:
● Give five back blows. Stand to the side and just behind a choking adult. For a child, kneel down behind. Place your arm across the person’s chest to support the person’s body. Bend the person over at the waist to face the ground. Strike five separate times between the person’s shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
● Give five abdominal thrusts. If back blows don’t remove the stuck object, give five abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich maneuver.
● Alternate between five blows and five thrusts until the blockage is dislodged.
Some sources only teach the abdominal thrust. It’s OK not to use back blows if you haven’t learned the back-blow technique. Both approaches are acceptable for adults and children older than age 1.

But I was desperately running away from them. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My third term, I ended up with a D in math. I didn’t do that well in my other classes, either. It seemed like all my friends were doing so well, getting opportunities over the summers.
My fifth term, I realized that I was awful at higher-level math. I had lost all confidence in myself. I went to a few classes at the beginning of the term, but after by midterm, I had totally stopped. My only relief was the dance team I was on. I would sleep all day, and then go to dance practice, and then go back to sleep. As expected, I failed in all of my classes and had to withdraw from MIT.
I had no choice but to tell my parents. Instead of yelling or hitting me, though, they just held me and cried. The next day, my dad took a day off from work and took me to a nearby, small arts college.
I had lost all confidence in myself. Before my first biology test, I didn’t think I could pass. I did pass. Since I had so much free time, I decided to join a biology lab. I realized that was what I wanted to do! I wanted to be a scientist!
This past May, I graduated with the highest honors, and now I have my PhD in biology. Though it ended up taking me 5 years to graduate from college, I can say now that dropping out of MIT was one of the best things that ever happened to me. While they create a shared and communicative digital(数字的)experience, their use also greatly reduces the amount of direct communication we have. So, while we feel closer than ever through smartphones, research shows that we're actually lonelier than ever.
We see this situation most commonly among the youth who were born into the digital age. Phones have increased the level of isolation(孤立). Janet Behrens, principal of Iowa Valley Junior-Senior High School, noticed it in the lunchroom, where students had their heads down looking at their phones and had little conversation with each other.
Then, she created a lunchroom policy, which requires all students to leave their phones behind during Friday lunches and sit at a table with students they may not know. During Friday lunches, kids pick a card that shows which lunch table they will be sitting at that day. Each table provides ideas for conversation starters, in case students have trouble thinking of things to talk about with kids they might not know.
Anyone who knows teens knows that they are likely to refuse to follow this kind of forced socialization(合群). So they may not quickly agree with such an idea. However, the new program is different. After taking a few weeks to get used to the new program, kids are kinder to each other and they actually look forward to Friday lunch hour. Sahara Kanke, a ninth grader, said, “I think it's fun. I was a bit confused when I first knew the program. But I like doing it now. People are nicer to each other now because they got to know each other at lunch.”
Policies like this are important. ABC News reported that students who use phones and computers less during class scored half a grade higher than students with smartphones. Due to the advantages of reducing smartphone use among the youth, schools around the world have been testing different methods to help students overcome the difficulties.
