Most teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Getting the right amount of sleep is necessary for anyone who wants to do well in tests or sports. Unfortunately, many teens don’t get enough sleep.
Until recently, teens was often blamed for staying up late, oversleeping for school, and falling asleep in class. But recent studies show that their sleep patterns(模式) actually differ from those of adults or kids.
Scientists say that during the teen years, the body’s circadian rhythm, which is controlled by a biological(与生物学有关的) clock in the brain, is temporarily reset, telling a person to fall asleep later and wake up later. This change might arise from the fact that the brain hormone melatonin(褪黑激素) is produced later at night for teens than it is for kids and adults. This can make it harder for teens to fall asleep early.
These changes in the body’s circadian rhythm are in line with a busy time in life. For most teens, the pressure to do well in school is stronger than when they were kids, and it’s harder to get by without studying hard. And teens also have other time demands — everything from sports and other after-school activities to doing a part-time job to save money for college.
Early start times in some schools might also play a role in lost sleep. Teens who fall asleep after midnight may still have to get up early for school, meaning that they might have only 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night. A few hours of missed sleep a night may not seem like a big deal, but it can lead to sleep loss over time.

From April to July of 2019, the explorers of National Geographic’s Okavango Wilderness Project continued pushing their way into the unknown zone in the Angolan highlands, the source of the Okavango River, to explore the rivers and lakes that feed the delta, which run throughout Angola, Namibia, and Botswana.
Steve Boyes, an explorer from National Geographic, has been a project leader since 2015, when the team began formally describing the biodiversity(生物多样性) and characteristics of the Angolan highlands’ rivers for the first time. Since 2015, the team has crossed the Cuito and Cuanavale Rivers — two branches of the Okavango River. On the latest trip, they explored the source lakes of these two rivers and then headed westward to the Cubango River — the upper reaches of the Okavango River.
The trip to the source lakes was particularly unique. Although the team had been there before, this was the first time that they would dive under the surface to view a hidden world. These lakes are surrounded by thick layers of peat (泥煤) that have gathered over thousands of years, and have remained mostly undisturbed.
“We found 96 species of fish in the source lakes,” says Adjany Costa, another explorer from National Geographic. She explains this biodiversity has been unexplored until now because the locals never even fish there for food — they believe the lakes and rivers are occupied by a snake-like monster that protects the habitat.
The Cubango River is quite different from the Cuito and the Cuanavale. It is rocky and rough, and unlike the others, it has a well-travelled road to its west, which brings contact with people. Besides learning the biodiversity of the zone, a main focus of the Cubango River exploration was on figuring out how it is influenced by people living nearby. The team hopes the data collected in the exploration will be used to prevent seasonal drying and overuse of the valuable Cubango waters that feed the Okavango system.
Costa, as a native of Angola, is devoted to protecting her country. “Ever since I started working with the project, it has changed my opinion of how I see Angola as a whole,” she said.

A recent study of tropical trees planted there in the early 1990s reported a surprising result: They have withstood temperatures higher than any likely to be experienced by tropical forests this century.
The study adds to a growing number of findings that are giving forest scientists something that’s been in short supply lately : hope. Plants may have unexpected resources that could help them survive — and perhaps even prosper — in a hotter, more carbon-rich future. And while tropical forests still face both human and natural threats, some researchers believe terrible reports of their approaching decline due to climate change may have been overstated.
“Biology is clever, ”says Scott Saleska, an ecologist at the University of Arizona in Tucson and co-leader of the Biosphere 2 study. “It’s a lot smarter than our models yet represent.”
The last few years have seen a flood of alarming reports about forests and climate change’s effects on them. Scientists have announced that the Amazon forest is no longer a reliable carbon sink; the Amazon rainforest may be nearing a tipping point; tropical forests globally are already close to the hottest temperatures they can tolerate and climate change is killing off old trees.
One thing is certainly true: Our fossil fuel emissions are creating a climate that humans have never seen and trees haven’t experienced in a very long time.“We’re pushing tropical forests into temperatures they’ve never seen since the Cretaceous — since there were dinosaurs,” says Abigail Swann, an ecologist and climate scientist at the University of Washington in Seattle.

This symbolic species, which is the only stork native to North America, has rebounded because dedicated partners in the southeast have worked tirelessly to restore ecosystems that support it. In addition, the wood stork has increased its range in coastal areas. The birds have adapted to new nesting areas, tripling the number of colonies across their range from 29 to 99 in recent years.
Credit goes mainly to the wildlife protections provided by the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which can impose restrictions on a variety of activities in areas where such species are located, such as development, mining and oil drilling. The act saved the wood stork and it helped preserve and rebuild vital habitats throughout the southeast, which has improved water quality and benefited countless other species who call the area home. The Endangered Species Act has saved 99%of the species that have been on the list since 1973, with 100 types of plants and animals delisted because they have recovered or are at least stable.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that restoration of the wood stork’s habitat, especially in the Florida Everglades and adjacent Big Cypress National Preserve, led to a sharp increase in breeding pairs. Those numbers had shrunk to just 5,000 pairs in 1984, whereas there are more than 10,000 pairs today.
“The proposed delisting of the wood stork is a significant milestone and a remarkable achievement of the hard work by federal agencies, state and local governments, tribes, conservation organizations, and private citizens in protecting and restoring our most at-risk species,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said.
If the wood stork is delisted, officials said it would remain protected by other laws including the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Clean Water Act. A monitoring plan would be put in place for at least five years to ensure the stork population remains stable.

The Basics
The site on which Castel dell’ Ovo now stands has a long history, beginning as a settlement for Greek colonists(殖民地定居者). The current castle was built in the 15th century, and today, the 19th-century fishing village of Borgo Marinari, known for its excellent seafood restaurants and marina(游艇停靠区), sits at the base of the castle.
The Egg Castle
The origin of the castle’s name comes from a story about the Roman poet Virgil, who is said to have placed a magical egg in the foundations beneath where the castle now stands. As long as the egg stays well, Castel dell’ Ovo will remain standing.
Things to Know Before you Go
·Castel dell’ Ovo is a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts.
·Admission to the castle and the museum is free.
·The inner halls of the castle are open to the public only during special events and exhibitions; the ramparts (城墙) and towers are always open.
·There is a lift from the ground floor to the ramparts, making the castle accessible to wheelchairs.
How to Get There
Castel dell’ Ovo is located in the Bay of Naples just off the coastal road. Bus 151 from the train station and 140 from the port stop at Castel dell’ Ovo.
When to Get there
The castle is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 am to 7 pm, and Sundays and holidays from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. The Prehistoric Museum is open only on weekends from 10 am to 1 pm. Comfort dogs have been found to augment levels of oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine in our brains, hormones (激素) promoting positive feelings and a happy mood (心情). But how are these pets helpful in the classroom?
For some students the comfort pet provides the emotional support they need, which then allows the child to be engaged and successful in their studies. A struggling student can hold the pet in the arms and get the support he or she needs at the time, which also develops their self-awareness and ability to regulate their emotions. In other cases, teachers use the pet as part of the lesson. Meredith Loftus, a teacher in New York, brought a dog named Chip to help out with a phonies game in the classroom.
Dog training isn’t necessarily a walk in the park, although it can definitely include that. It takes time, effort and consistency to train pets, and this is the case for this program, too.
To be a part of the program, an educator and their dog must participate in a six-hour training session by The Good Dog Foundation. This training teaches the educator what to do if students are scared of pets. It also trains dogs on the differences they’ll experience in a school environment, such as the school bell, fire alarms, loud announcements and other possible distractions. The dog is also trained at being friendly with strangers and the handler, in this case the educator, who needs to be very in tune with the pet and know how to look out for its stress signals.
The program has been a genuine success so far, and a helpful addition to the education and well-being of many students in New York. In fact, hundreds of other schools have expressed their interest in joining the program and may be including it in their curriculum in the near future.

On Monday morning, you were feeling so bright-eyed, and you only had one cup of coffee, instead of your usual two. But dons’ be cheated by your energy: You’re still carrying around a heavy load of sleepiness, or what experts call “sleep debt” - in this case something like six hours, almost a full night’s sleep.
Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. It’s a deficit(缺乏)that grows every time we skim some extra minutes off our nightly sleep. “People accumulate(积累)sleep debt gradually without being noticed,” says William C. Decent, founder of the Stanford University Sleep Research Center. Studies show that such short-term lack of sleep leads to a foggy brain, worsened vision, and trouble remembering. Long-term effects include obesity(肥胖)and heart disease.A survey by the National Sleep Foundation reports that we’re losing one hour of sleep each night---more than two full weeks of sleep every year.
The good news is that, like all debts, with some work, sleep debt can be repaid. Adding an extra hour or two of sleep a night is the way to catch up on sleep debt. For the long-term lack of sleep, take it easy for a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern. Go to bed when you are tired, and allow your body to wake you in the morning (no alarm clock allowed). You may find yourself catatonic(有紧张感的)in the beginning of the recovery cycle: expect to have ten hours shut-eye per night. As the days pass, however, the amount of sleeping time will gradually decrease.
So earn back that lost sleep---and follow the orders of your inner sleep needs, and you’ll feel better. “When you put away sleep debt, you become a superman,” says Stanford’s Dement, talking about the improved mental and physical abilities that come with being well rested.
1. The example of sleep math is used to show___________A.in what case you build up a sleep debt |
B.why you need six hours sleep every night |
C.why you are full of energy even when you don’t have enough sleep |

"You will have to follow some rules, said his grandmother. "You can only ride in the park--never on the streets. You have to promise to wear a helmet (头盔). If you hurt yourself too much, I have the right to take your skateboard away Is it a deal?"
"You bet!" Jason was so excited that he jumped off the sofa. A week later he had a board and a helmet.
On Saturday, his grandmother dropped him off near the park. He was happy to have a grandmother who let him try new things.
Kids in the park were moving quickly up and down the ramps (坡道). They flew into the air and landed as easily as birds. When he watched the X games, Jason felt like he was doing the tricks himself. But watching these kids up close, he knew that none of it was going to be easy. He felt a little bit scared.
Very slowly he carried his board to the ramp. Taking a deep breath, he put his right foot on the board. He kicked off with his left foot. For a few seconds he glided (滑行) along, just waiting to fall. Then he came to a stop Kicking off again, he waited for the worst to happen. Again, he stayed up. The third time he kicked, lost his balance and fell hard on his left knee.
It hurt, but it was no big deal! Why had he been so scared? Now he felt calm because things had gone wrong and he was fine!
Next time he kicked off harder and went fast and farther. " Excellent! "said a girl as she passed him "Extreme!" laughed Jason to himself. "Not quite."

Around that time, Dr. Duke’s wife, Sara, a psychologist who works with children with learning disabilities, noticed something about her students. “The ones who know a lot about their families tend to do better when they face challenges,” she said.
Her husband was interested, and along with a colleague, Robyn Fivush, set out to learn if Sara’s assumption was valid. They developed a measure called the “Do You Know?” scale(量表)that asked children to answer 20 questions. Examples included: Do you know where you grandparents grew up? Do you know where your mom and dad went to high school? Do you know an illness or something really terrible that happened in your family?
Dr. Duke and Dr. Fivush asked those questions of four dozen families in the summer of 2001, and taped several of their dinner table conversations. They then compared children’s results to a series of psychological tests the children had taken, and reached a surprising conclusion. The more children knew about their family’s history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives and the higher their self-respect. Why does knowing where your grandmother went to school help a child become tougher and happier? “The answers have to do with a child’s sense of being part of a larger family,” Dr. Duke said.
So if you want a happier family, retell the story of your family, especially about the positive moments and how you braved the difficult ones. That act alone may increase the probability that your family will thrive ( 兴 旺 )for many generations to come. This is particularly important for children, whose identity tends to get locked in during adolescence.
