Languages open up new doors
Which foreign language(s) would you like to learn? Why do you want to learn it\them?
I grew up in a family of 12 (10 children and parents) and a large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. They married freely — that is, to people from any country. So it was common to hear people talking but not sure what they were speaking. There were Italian and French mixed with English, Eastern European accents(口音) with Asian English.
I later learned Spanish while living in New York City and married a Japanese man who could speak English. One day, my husband received a letter from a dear friend from Japan who he hadn’t seen for many years. This friend was visiting our city and we planned to meet. When we finally met, we discovered that his friend had been in South America for many years and spoke only Japanese and Spanish. So he spoke to me in Spanish and to my husband in Japanese; I spoke to him in Spanish and to my husband in English; and my husband spoke to me in English and to his friend in Japanese. We did this for about an hour! It was fun.
These experiences taught me the importance of learning other types of language. I can understand other people who speak a different language — language of someone whose experience has taken them down a road very different from mine.

It takes years to grow up. But 14-year-old Chen Xiyue from Shanghai Longlin Midde School says she feels much older this week. “Within three days, I did many things for the first time in my life,” she said, “like making the bed, living away from home, sharing a room with others and going camping(露营). I can take good care of myself.”
About 2500 other teenagers from nine schools of Shanghai had the same experience as Chen. From Monday to Wednesday this week, Chen and her classmates went to the Oriental Green Boat(东方绿洲), a training center for teenagers, to help them get ready for real life.
Chen Lei, a girl at Shanghai Meiyuan Sohool, usually sees her parents every day. At first, she was scared(害怕的) to leave them. But soon she found that sharing one room with others can be a lot of fun. She was also surprised to find she could take care of herself. “One of my friends set the alarm clock(闹钟)wrong, so we all woke up one hour earlier,” she said. “But it didn’t matter. We were happy, and I didn’t miss home at all.”
Other students found it hard to do some simple things like making the bed.
“It took me nearly half an hour to make the covers look good,” said Zhu Bo, a boy from Meiyuan Middle School. In one activity called “Fourteenth Birthday”, students celebrated together to show everyone how they have grown up. “Through this training, the students can learn to be independent(独立的), get on well with others and have team spirit,” said Shen Xia, a Shanghii Weiyu Middle School teacher who led students at the center.

Did you hear of the supercomputer? Recently, China’s Tianhe-1(天河一号) was ranked as the world’s fastest supercomputer, according to a new list of world’s TOP 500 supercomputers.
It took 200 Chinese scientists two years to build the fastest supercomputer. It can do 2, 507 trillion (万亿次) calculations (计算) in a second! That means it will take a personal computer 600 years to finish the work that a supercomputer does in a day!
The US now leads the world in the area of supercomputers. It is home to more than half of the world’s top 500 supercomputers. Japan also has advanced technology. China is developing its supercomputer technology quickly. But experts say it will take years before China’s total computing power can catch up with that of the US.
Supercomputers can work on many different things. They can solve problems in areas like national defense(国防), energy and science. In business, you can also use supercomputers. Oil companies use them to find oil and gas. Banks use them for quick trades. Food companies even use supercomputers to make sure that they put potato chips into cans without breaking them.
To make a supercomputer, scientists first need to link (连接) thousands of small computers together. Then they use software(软件) to turn them into one supercomputer. In fact, any person with enough knowledge about computers can make a supercomputer. But you need the top technology to make a supercomputer run fast.
