New artificial intelligence software is being used in Japan to monitor the body language of shoppers and look for signs that they are planning to shoplift (在商场中偷窃).
The software, which is made by a Tokyo company called Vaak, is different from similar products that work by matching faces to criminal records. Instead, VaakEye uses behavior to predict criminal action. Company founder Ryo Tanaka said his team offer 100,000/hours worth of surveillance (监视) data to train it to monitor everything from the facial expressions of shoppers to their movement and clothing.
Since VaakEye launched last month, it has been used in 50 stores across Japan. Vaak said that there will be another 100 stores using it next month. That could help reduce global retail costs from shoplifting, which hit $34 billion in 2017 according to the Global Shrink. Index.
“Though the goal is to prevent theft, is it legal of even moral to prevent someone from entering a store based on this software?” said Michelle Grant. “This should not be decided by the software developers. What we provide is the information of the suspicious (可疑的) image. We don’t decide who is criminal. The shop decides who’s criminal,” said Tanaka.
“Are people aware of what’s happening?” asked Couchman. “Do they agree? What happens to the data? How is it protected? Might it be shared?” Grant said consumers are willing to sacrifice some privacy for convenience, such as using face recognition (人脸识别) for payment—but only when they’re aware the technology is being used. Therefore, there should be notice before they enter the stores so that they can decide whether to leave or not, how they use it, how long they use it.

A.thinks the developers can prevent someone from entering a store |
B.thinks consumers don’t want to sacrifice their privacy anytime, anywhere |
C.thinks consumers have the right to know where the information is analyzed |

Tsunami (海啸): Killer Wave
The warnings are few. The signs are sudden. The ground shakes. The tide goes into reverse. A great roaring sound fills the air. And then… It strikes. Wave after wave of crashing, crushing water. And when it is over, nothing is left. A tsunami.
The word in Japanese means "harbor wave". Japan has been hit by many tsunamis in its history, as a result of its location. It lies across the edges of 4 tectonic plates (地壳板块). Most earthquakes are born in such places. When two tectonic plates push together, the earthquake sends enormous amounts of energy up through the ocean. A series of waves expands in all directions. In deep water, these waves travel fast – up to 500 miles an hour - but reach a height of only a few feet. A passing ship may not even notice them. But as the waves enter shallow waters and come into contact with the ocean floor, their speed is reduced but their height is raised. As they move onto land, the waves can rise as high as a 10-story building.
A tsunami wave doesn't break like an ordinary wave. Instead, it advances like a wall of water, crashing over everything in its way, sometimes reaching more than a kilometer inland. More damage is caused when the wave moves back out to sea. It drags everything in its path underwater and out to sea. Most tsunamis have several waves. They arrive between 10 and 60 minutes after the first strike – just when survivors think the danger has passed.
The deadliest tsunami ever recorded occurred in December of 2004. An earthquake off the coast of Indonesia caused a tsunami that rushed across the Indian Ocean and reached as far as the coast of Africa. Whole sections of cities were destroyed. More than 200,000 people died.
Most had no way of being warned. Five thousand miles away in Hawaii, scientists at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center monitor the earth's movements 24 hours a day. They hope to prevent a similar disaster from happening in the Pacific region. If they discover a quake big enough to cause a tsunami, the scientists try to find out where the wave will head and warn people in its path. Their advice-is simple: leave the coastal areas and move to higher ground. Wait for news that the danger has passed. And be ready to deal with the damage that a tsunami leaves behind.

All over the world, thousands of animals are used for wildlife tourism. People travel to watch monkey shows, hug baby tigers and swim with dolphins. It might look like fun, but there are reports that animals are hurt now and again. The World Animal Protection(WAP) says that up to 550,000 wild animals are exposed (暴露) to ill treatment around the world. In Cambodia, for example, it’s been reported that elephants have died after carrying tourists for long in hot weather. This is getting attention—over 100 travel companies have promised that they will no longer open up such places. However, some people argue that animal tourism isn’t always as bad as it seems. So what do you think?
Group Yes | Group No |
Animals weren’t put on this planet for entertainment. They should be free to live. The way animals are treated now is often cruel and causes much pain. Even if treated well, they cannot act in the same way as they would in the wild. We don’t need wildlife tourism. We can see animals close up in their natural home in TV programmes. There’s no need to disturb them in their real lives. | It is enjoyable and educational for people to communicate with animals. The more people know about them, the more they want to protect them. Wildlife tourism brings money to poor areas and may be the only way for some people to make a living. Not all animals are treated badly. Some endangered animals are under the protection of programs that look after rare species(稀有物种). |
